BRAKE CALIPER

a. Introduction

The brake caliper plays a central role in a disc-brake system and has two functions.
First, it acts either as a bracket to support the brake pads on either side of the rotor
or to support the caliper bracket itself there are other designs, but these are the two
most common. Second, it uses pistons to convert pressure exerted on the brake fluid
by the master cylinder into friction on the rotor.
In simple terms, a brake caliper’s purpose is to squeeze the brake pads against the
rotor to stop the car. There are two main types of calipers, a single piston and a dual
piston. Most front calipers are dual piston but many cars use single piston calipers
on the rear, where less braking force is needed.
Stepping on the brake pedal forces the master cylinder piston forward, compressing
the brake fluid. The brake fluid forces the caliper pistons toward the rotors, pinching
the rotors in between the brake pads, which creates friction and slows the vehicle.
b. Equipment Measuring Brake Caliper

There are four types of measurement tool that we will be using to measure brake
caliper. Among of them is height gauge, vernier caliper, micrometer and dial
indicator.

1) Height gauge

2) Vernier Caliper
3) Micrometer

4) Dial Indicator
c. Function of equipment

Equipment Function

Height Gauge A height gage is a measuring

instrument in which a slider with a
measuring stylus moves relative to a
measuring scale on a beam and in
which this motion is along a single
vertical axis nominally perpendicular to
a reference plane on the instrument
base.
Vernier Caliper Vernier calipers are measuring tools
used mainly for measuring linear
dimensions. These calipers come handy
in measuring the diameter of circular
objects. Their circular jaws fit securely
on either side of the circumference of
round objects.
Micrometer A micrometer is a tool that measures
the size of a target by enclosing it.
Some models are even able to perform
measurements in units of 1 μm. Unlike
hand calipers, micrometers adhere to
Abbe's principle, which enables them to
perform more accurate measurements.
Dial Indicator Dial Indicators are measuring devices
used in mechanical and industrial
applications. They are designed to
measure in vertical or horizontal
positions and typically used to measure
clearances, tolerance, and variation in
tolerance of machined parts to ensure
accuracy.
d. Procedures/Methods in how to use the measuring equipment.

1) Height Gauge/Dial Indicator

Height gauge : A height gauge is very necessary to measure the height of the
rotor.

Dial Indicator : We use dial indicator to measure clearances, tolerances and

variations in tolerances of machined parts to ensure accuracy. I use dial indicator
to check the roughness of rotor(disc).

2) Vernier Caliper

The role of a vernier caliper is to measure the diameter of the wheel hub such as the
inner diameter and the outer diameter. We use this measuring tool because it takes
accurate measurement readings between two graduation marks on a linear scale
using mechanical interpolation, thus improving resolution and reducing measurement
uncertainty by using vernier sharpness to reduce human estimation error.
3) Micrometer

A micrometer is essential to measure the thickness of the brake pads. We use this
measuring tool because it can measure more accurately than can be done without
assistance when reading a uniformly divided straight or round measurement scale.
