1. Measuring tool and gauges

Are tools used to measure various parameters

such as clearance, diameter, depth, thickness,
runout, etc. These are critical engineering
parameters, which describe the condition of
the working machinery.
*Vernier caliper *Micrometer
*Bore gauge *Feeler gauge
*Depth gauge

2. Vernier Caliper
A precise tool used in auto repair when the internal and
external diameters of a piece need to be measured before
replacing it. Caliper means any instrument with two jaws
which is used to determine the diameters of objects.
The Least count of a Vernier caliper is 0.1 mm or 0.01cm
3 types of Vernier caliper:
• Digital caliper
• Standard Vernier caliper
• Dial Vernier caliper

3. Micrometer
Much more accurate than the Vernier caliper
is used to measure small parameters. The
least count of the micrometer is 0.01 mm or
0.001cm and it varies with the size of the
micrometer.
Mainly two types of micrometer are available:
• Inside micrometer (for inside diameter)
• Outside micrometer (for outside diameter)

4. Bore Gauge

A tool that accurately measures the

diameter of any hole. The most
common is the dial bore gauge, usually
calibrated in 0.001 inch (0.0025 cm) or
0.0001 inch (0.00025 cm).
Two varieties:
a. Telescopic gauges
b. Dial bore Gauges

a. Telescopic gauges
Used to measure a bore’s size,
by transferring the internal
dimension to a remote measuring
tool. They are a direct equivalent
of inside calipers and require the
operator to develop the correct
feel to obtain repeatable results.

b. Dial Bore Gauge
Is similar to a telescopic gauge but
includes a digital or analogy readout. It
must be set to the nominal value of the
bore. The most accurate setting option
include ring gauges (also called master
rings) and a bore gauge setting equipment
that utilize gauge blocks, where overall
accuracy can be within 0.0001 inches or
0.00254 millimeters.

5. Depth Gauge

Is used to measure the depth of a slot,

hole or any other surface of an object, like
the thread depth of a tire for instance. Can
be a micrometer style type, a dial indicator
type, or modified Vernier type tool, which
means the measuring base is fitted on the
reading scale of a micrometer, dial
indicator or the Vernier scale.

6. Feeler Gauge

Is a tool used to measure gap widths.

For instance, the piston ring
clearance, engine bearing clearance,
tappet clearance, camshaft gape, etc.
