LAKE VIEW RESORT

BRIEF
In Today’s world, we often perceive life as being busy, chaotic and stressful, always on
the go, which often leads to feelings of being exhausted, overwhelmed and anxious.
Every person needs to hear himself, give oneself the time and space to get off the
thread mill of life.

RESORT
The main purpose of a resort is to offer relaxation and recreation in addition to
accommodation, meals and other basic facilities. They are a great vacation destination
for families. While there are many types of resorts, holiday resorts are self-contained
resorts which provide most of its clients wants during their stay which includes
entertainment, sports, relaxation and shopping, tour arrangements etc.,

SYMBIOSIS OF MAN AND NATURE

Earlier any kind of change which was economically profitable was justified, even if it
caused degradation of environmental quality and human life. Many human inventions,
industrial and agricultural practices have ecological effects and have dangerous
consequences in future. Due to rapid urban growth in developing cities, the natural
habitat and ecosystems are getting affected. The loss of natural environment is
ultimately impacting the global phenomena.

Emergence of environmental ethics has contributed towards some positive change in our
attitudes and thoughts towards ‘others’. Man can create new and lasting ecological
values by working in collaboration with nature.
AIM
The main aim is to study and design a resort over the lake side which can adapt to
the environment in a process of constant evolution.
Understanding the natural material systems and implementing them with
architectural structures which in turn results in the “Symbiosis of Man –
Architecture - Nature”.
Study and understand the concept of giving back and would implement the same
in their designs.

CASE STUDIES
Students are required to identify resorts to understand the spaces, observing and analyzing
them. As per the studies done to understand the symbiosis between a built up space and
nature, students are expected to analyze the present case studies of the resorts in the
following way.

FRAME WORK

ANALYSIS FOR SURROUNDINGS

- Micro climate and surrounding environment
- Compatibility issues in terms of land uses
- Issue with visual aspects (Dominant Vs Subservient)
- Approaches / accessibility

SITE LEVEL ANALYSIS

- Site level zoning and characterization
- Hierarchy of Built forms and their co-relations to overall site design
- Hierarchy of open spaces and their co-relations to overall site design
- Hierarchy of street network and their co-relation to overall site design
- Bye laws, development regulation, land use % and analysis
- Orientations, approaches within the site network and the climatic
performances of building/ group of building
- Consideration towards sustainability aspects in site design which include, rain
water harvesting/ alternate energy harvesting network etc.
- Site level services- site drainage, water supply/ EPBC/ surveillance
- Lighting, signage, delineations, electricity, water supply/ other plumbing issues
- Barrier free environment issues (both at site and building block level)

ANALYSIS OF BUILT SPACE/ BUILT FORM

- User typology (social, cultural, economic issues) and user behavior;
- Functional analysis of all spaces and its relation with the form achieved by the
designer. Public/ semi/ private zones/ approaches/ circulation, vertical and
horizontal.
- Orientation- lighting and ventilation (natural)
- Material choice/ thermal comfort/ visual comfort/ noise issues.
- Core areas v/s ancillary areas and their % and influence on each other
- Visual analysis of building
- Electrical services/ plumbing/ sanitation default
- Artificial lighting, ventilation A/C network
- Structural aspects of the building/s

FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
- Students are expected to understand the different activities of a resort and
understand the spacial arrangement of the different spaces. Plan, elevations,
sections, pictures of the building, site level understanding is required and has
to be documented.

MATERIAL ANALYSIS
- Understanding the materials used for the structure of the building has to be
identified along with the various other materials used at various places (indoor
and outdoor). The usability and the cost of the materials also have to be
considered. Students are expected to make a report of the materials used.
SITE AND BUILDING ANALYSIS
Where the Site is considered to be a form of Energy, a building is an Intervention.
Students need to observe and document how this intervention is affecting the
natural energy. The geophysical aspects of the site have to be documented.

LAND
Topography of the land, Soil conditions, Natural vegetation, etc. has to be
observed in relation to the building.

WATER
Existing water bodies/ artificial water bodies and their usage to the building has to
be observed. Any water harvesting or recycling systems and their functioning over
the period of the year has to be understood.

WIND
The direction of the wind flow has to be observed in that area. The effect of the
air flow due to the intervention also has to be noted.

LIGHT
The orientation of the building and the effect of natural light system has to be
documented here. The usage of artificial and natural light in different spaces
needs to be observed and documented

ENERGY
The usage of energy (electricity, biogas, etc.) in various parts of the building has to
be considered and the sources of energy needs to be documented

HUMAN RESOURCES AND BUILDING

Study on how the building is affecting the physical and psychological behavior of
the different user groups has to be understood.
SITE DETAILS LAKNAVARAM

Laknavaram lake which is located at a distance of 80km from Warangal is spread over
10,000 acres. It not only attracts tourists with its scenic beauty but also has a great
history. The lake was formed by closing down three narrow valleys. Each valley is
replaced with a short bund, and hills act as their natural barrier. The lake has been
constructed by the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty in 13th Century A.D. The rulers
expanded it to grow as a source of irrigation.

An added advantage is that the lake takes shelter in isolated surroundings and this
makes your holiday very private. The huge expanse of calm and serene water,
surrounded by dense green growth of vegetation, has about 13 islands. Another added
attraction to this mystic beauty is the suspension bridge. The hanging bridge takes you
to the mini island in the lake
REQUIREMENTS
Residential
Accommodation facility for 20 families (4- 5 persons/ family)

Accommodation can be in the form of cottages, clusters, fluid forms etc.

The design needs to be sensitive to the natural eco system surrounding the lake

Recreational
Recreational spaces have to be provided for visitors to spend quality time. The
activity of this space is left to student’s choice.
No video games / television/ internet activities would be a part of the recreation
activities

Choice of opting any passive recreation facility which involves notion of

entertainment should be calm, without disturbing the natural surroundings.
