1.1 What is a Gerund?

A gerund is a form of the non-finite verb (not conjugated) used to make a verb phrase that can
substitute for a noun phrase. The present participle form is used, since it ends in 'ing', for
example 'hearing'.
Finite verbs (conjugated verbs) have a subject, can change form and be used to make
independent clauses (for example “they smile a lot”) while non-finite verbs (unconjugated verbs)
tend not to be changed like that.

Gerunds are verb forms ending in ‘ing’ that name activities and are placed in the sentence in
which a noun is used, for example, “Jogging is very good for you” or “I look forward to finishing
my studies”. Gerunds can be the subject of the sentence: "Flying is lovely". Gerunds can be the
object of the sentence: "She likes eating chocolate." Gerunds can be the object of a preposition:
"After jogging she relaxes".

1.2 What is an Infinitive?

The infinitive is the basic form of a verb. In English, when we talk about the infinitive, we
usually refer to the "present infinitive", which is the most used. However, there are four other
compound verb forms with infinitives in English: the "perfect infinitive", the "perfect continuous
infinitive", the "continuous infinitive" and the "passive infinitive".

There are infinitives that can be introduced by an auxiliary modal verb, for example “we may
leave”, or a main verb, “that made me smile”, or a main verb with 'to' or 'as' or by noun phrases
like “to smile would have been difficult”.
