LET US KNOW
Knowing different types of sentences is important as
it will help us in using some appropriate phrases to
deliver a clear message with the right tone.
This lesson may help you understand and learn the use
of different kinds of sentences in a dialogue. It also
contains activities that will help you use the different types
of sentences.

LET US REVIEW

LET US STUDY
Read and study the sentences below. These
are the sentences taken from the story “Jan’s
Birthday Surprise”, then answer the questions that
follow.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Sentence a -Father and Mother greeted Jan.
Sentence b -May I have a new bike, Father?
Sentence c -Happy birthday, Jan!
Sentence d -Don’t run your bike too fast.
1. What is sentence a telling? What punctuation mark is
placed at the end of sentence a?
2. In sentence b, what does Jan want to have? What
punctuation mark is placed at the end of it?
3. How does one feel when greeting someone? What is
placed at the end of sentence c?
4. In sentence d, what did father tell Jan not to do? What
is placed at the end of sentence d?
• Sentence a is called a declarative sentence. It states
something.
• Sentence b is called an interrogative sentence. It asks
a question.
• Sentence c is called exclamatory sentence. It
expresses strong feelings.
• Sentence d is called an imperative sentence. It makes
a command or request.

LET US REMEMBER
There are types of sentences that we can use in
dialogues. A declarative sentence tells about something
and ends with a period. An interrogative sentence asks for
something and ends with a question mark. An exclamatory
sentence shows strong feelings and ends with an
exclamation point and an imperative sentence tells
someone to do something and ends with a period.

LET US APPRECIATE
In dialogues, what are the different types of
sentences that you can use to show respect and courtesy?
Classify what type of sentences are the following courteous
expressions. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper.
1. Good morning!
2. May I know who is on the line?
3. How may I help you?
4. Please give me a copy of my bill.
5. Thank you for your help.
