SUMMARY
The samples scheduled for testing were rotary sidewall core samples taken from the
Mahkota-1 well.
Electrical properties measurements (used to generate "a", "m" and "n" values) were
made at the effective overburden pressures. Using the cation exchange capacity values
in conjunction with the Waxman-Smits-Thomas Equations, idealised values of "m*" and
"n*" were calculated. Assuming a traditional intercept value for "a" of 1.00, below are
the composite values calculated:
Sand Brine, m m* n n*
Name mg/L (composite) (composite) (composite) (composite)
MKT1253 20,386 1.85 1.96 1.43 1.66
MKT1596 –
29,734 1.80 1.97 1.61 1.85
MKT1669
Composite 1.82 1.97 1.58 1.82
The cation exchange capacity (CEC) performed on the selected samples were ranged
from 1.46 to 4.78 meq/100g.
The air-water capillary pressure by porous plate test performed in conjunction with
the formation resistivity index measurement was tested up to the maximum capillary
pressure of 150 psi. The samples yielded average residual water saturation ranged
from 9.9 to 28.5 percent pore volume.
The laser particle size analysis (LPSA) performed on the selected samples indicated
samples were generally ranged from very fine to medium grain sandstone.

INTRODUCTION
In the e-mail message dated 29 March 2006 and the Purchase Order No. POSO038702
(AFE66120) dated 26 June 2006, Murphy Sarawak Oil Company Limited requested Core
Laboratories Malaysia Sdn Bhd to perform the following analyses on the rotary side wall
samples taken from Mahkota-1 well:
The Core Photography had previously been reported separately on a CD-ROM. The
petrography studies (our ref: GSM06028M) was issued in separate report.
A total of thirty-five (35) rotary side wall core samples were received in our Shah Alam
facilities. Note that many of the samples have fairly large/deep indentations in the middle
of the samples – making such samples less useful and in some case, useless for tests
that require longer cylindrical plug. Selected suitable samples were scheduled for the
above analyses.
Information of the simulated brine and net confining pressure to be used for the analyses
were provided by Murphy Sarawak Oil Company Limited in the e-mail messages dated 5
July 2006. Please refer to Appendix 2 for detailed brine compositions.

LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Sample Preparation
A total of thirty-five (35) rotary side wall core samples were received in our Shah Alam
facilities. The samples were scheduled for various analyses.
The samples selected for routine core analysis and special core analysis were trimmed
to cylindrical shape to render them suitable for permeability and porosity measurements.
Some of the friable samples were encased in nickel sleeves to prevent grain loss during
testing. For those samples not suitable for permeability and porosity measurements,
only grain densities were determined.
The samples were extracted of any residual hydrocarbons and salts using a cool re-flux
technique, with toluene and methanol as the solvents. These samples were
subsequently dried in a humidity controlled oven set at 60°C and 40-45% relative
humidity to constant weight prior to further measurements.
Digital Photography
For the samples selected for core photography, the photographs were taken in two
stages:-
1. Samples as received.
2. Samples after trimming to right-cylindrical shape.
Before trimming, quick snap shots were taken to see the condition of the samples. Once
the samples have been trimmed, photos were taken at 0° and 90° along the sample axis
together with top and bottom of each sample. All the samples were photographed under
white light, ultra violet photograph was taken if sample shown fluorescence under the
ultra violet light.
The images were then burnt onto the CD-ROM for reporting purpose.

Pore volumes were determined by the gas expansion method using Helium. Klinkenberg
permeabilities were determined by transient pressure decay technique using helium gas.
From these data, the Klinkenberg gas slippage and Forchheimer turbulence factor were
calculated.
Grain volumes were determined at room conditions in a matrix cup applying the Boyle’s
Law gas expansion method. Grain densities were calculated from these data and the dry
weights of the samples.
Resistivity measurements were again monitored over a period of several days until the
formation resistivity factor values became stable indicating ionic equilibrium within the pore
spaces of the samples. Formation resistivity factor data were calculated from the above
determinations.
Formation resistivity factor data were calculated from the above determinations using the
following equation:
Ro a
F= = m
Rw φ
MURPHY SARAWAK OIL COMPANY LIMITED Appendix 1 - 3
Well: Mahkota-1 (MSCT)
The samples were incrementally desaturated using humidified air maintained at pressures
increasing from 1 to 150 psi. At each pressure increment, brine displaced at the
downstream end was monitored as the sample reached capillary equilibrium and the water
saturation of each sample was calculated.
The presence of the semi-permeable membrane helped minimise capillary end-effects and
consequent distortion of the saturation profile through the sample. The brine in the
membrane did not interfere with calculation of sample water saturation as the membrane
remained fully saturated with brine only at all times.
Resistivity measurements were recorded with respect to the change in water saturation.
Formation resistivity index values were calculated from the above measurements using the
following equation:
Rt
RI = = Sw − n
Ro
where: RI = Formation Resistivity Index
Rt = Formation Resistivity of Partially Desaturated Core, ohm-meter
Ro = Resistivity of 100 % Brine Saturated Core, ohm-meter
Sw = Brine Saturation, fraction
n = Saturation Exponent
On removal of the samples from the coreholders, the samples were subjected to the Dean-
Stark process to determine the water saturation in the samples at the completion of the
test.

2. From the laboratory measured formation factor (F) value generated for each sample,
calculate the idealised F* value thus
F *= F (1+ Rw .B .Qv )
a *= Intercept ,1 . 00
4. From the laboratory measured resistivity index (RI) and the associated water saturation
(Sw) value, calculate the value for n* thus :
⎡ Rw .B .Qv ⎤
⎢ 1+ Sw ⎥
Sw − n * = RI * = RI ⎢ ⎥
⎢ 1+ Rw .B .Qv ⎥

Experimental Procedures
• A representative portion of sample was cleaned and dried before disaggregated
using a rubber pestle and mortar.
• A 1-2g sub-sample was taken and dispersed in approximately 75mL of 1000ppm-
sodium hexametaphosphate (Calgon) which acts as a dispersion aid.
• The slurry was dispersed into the sample chamber of the machine.
• Sonification using an internal ultrasonic bath is performed for 2 minutes to ensure
homogenization before measurement is started.
• The results of the particle size distribution analysis are presented in both in the
following tabular and graphical format.
and concepts were originally defined by Trask (1930) and subsequently modified by
Folk and Ward (1957).
The statistical coefficients comprise (1) median and mean as measures of central
tendency, (2) a measure of sorting (standard deviation), (3) skewness the lopsidedness
of the curve, and (4) kurtosis the degree of peakedness. This calculation shows the phi
(∅) values which are read from the cumulative frequency plot (Folk and Ward, 1957).

We would appreciate a subset from these to be washed cleaned in hot toluene,
and then treated with rather dilute peroxide
(if it does not over re-act with any remnant toluene!)
and again washed through a 63 micron seive
(microfossils style processing to get rid of clays)
I would appreciate you revert to me on the cost of this cuttings clean up at your earliest
convenience as
there are are four other wells which Murphy wishes to do in-house this way to augment the MSCT
programme

Dear Karen,
you will note that sample 35's OSPs are less than your
"usual" minimum confining pressure of 800psi - please ad vise
please use the enclosed brine compositions for the appropriate samples
