- This week in all your classes, we are celebrating Black History Month.
- You are learning jazz music in your music class, Reading books on black history in English, and
math you are learning about the hidden figures.

Objective and Standards: In our class, you will choose one important black historical figure. Research to
discover the importance of the historical figure and to construct a timeline of the important events in
the individuals life. Create a PowerPoint presentation and present to the class.

- Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form
(e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually or mathematically. (RST.7)
S: Why?
T: Researching a black historical figure provides a more complete picture of the past. Black Historical
figures valued civil rights, which is what we are learning in this unit.

Scaffolding: In the beginning of class, I showed a video about Martin Luther King’s famous speech called.
“I Have a Dream”. His speech was one of the reasons why we don’t see segregation in the United States
today. However, there are many other historical figures that pushed for civil rights, and that is that we
will be focusing on for the next week.

Vocabulary :
- Civil Rights
- Segregation
- Discrimination

T: Write words on white board and asks students if they know the definitions of these words.
T: Defines words and has students write them in their notes.

Procedure:
T: Teacher continues through power point presentation that shows important and famous black
historical figures.
1. Each slide shows a picture of a Black Historical Figure and student will guess who this figure
is.
2. Students will guess the individual who is presented in the photo.
3. Teacher gives a brief summary about this individual..
4. After the PowerPoint presentation, student will pick a historical figure to write about

T: Discuss and recommends good and reliable websites and posts them in google classroom for easy
access:

 Shows any log in’s and posts them on google classroom

T: Will show student how to conduct their research


 The teacher will project her computer screen onto the board to show student how to research.
 The teacher will use World book online for this example.
 Teacher will show students how to log in (username and password)
 Teacher will type a black historical figures name in the search bar, in this case, the teacher chose
to research Martin Luther King Jr.
 The teacher will hit the search button and watch as all the information on Martin Luther King Jr
pop up on the screen.
 Teacher will show the other sites that students can use to find more information and post them
onto google classroom
T: Will hand out Timeline work sheet to all students
 Teacher will draw a time line on the board and ask student to draw a time line in their note
books and write down what he/she puts on the board. Maybe even ask students to come up to
the board and write stuff down too.
 Teacher will ask students to help him/her fill out this timeline for Martin Luther King
 Teacher will read the information found on World Book out loud and stop and ask if the newly
read information should go on the timeline.
 After the timeline is done, students will get a clear understanding on how to fill out the time
timeline, what information to look for and have an example in their not books to refer back to
later if needed.

Learning Styles:
- While presenting the lesson, the teacher will answer any questions student have. By working on
example together with the students, all learning styles will be catered to.
- Teacher will cater to Auditory learners by giving clear and accurate instruction and asking
questions.
- For Physical learners, the teacher will have them engaged by encouraging them to write in their
notebooks and having them come up to board and write the information down.
- Visual learners: Teacher will write out a timeline giving them visual material to refer to.
- Verbal Learner: Teacher will have students write down her example and encourage them to
participate in class discussion.
- Logical learners: teacher will use the timeline to accurately classify an important event to a
specific date
- Social Learner: Class will be working in a big group and collaborating while creating this example
timeline
- Intrapersonal learner: encouraging but not forcing student to participate in class discussion.
Teacher will walk around and check in with students to ensure all understand the material.

Groups: While the class is working, the teacher will be walking around the classroom and meeting with
every student to offer and help and encouragement.

Closure:
- At the and of the lesson, student will walk to the computer lab and work on their research and
timelines for the remainder of class.

Review:
- For homework, students will gather information at home or at the library to add onto their
previous research conducted in class.
