Instructional Software Lacey Lambert
and allows them to evaluate MLK’s life without having difficulty understanding. Also, using their first language
will help the students grow academically since they are aware of what is being discussed and can easily follow
along with the video. Another way to extend and support the learning experience for all students is through
Closed Captioning which allows subtitles to be seen at the bottom of the video as students are watching. This
could be beneficial to students who may be hearing impaired or even those who may have difficulty staying
focused. By using Closed Captioning, the students are able to follow along easily with what is being said
throughout the video. The students could even take time to pause the video to make sure they are reading
and understanding what the video is saying.
Lesson idea implementation:
After the teacher had read the standard and objectives aloud, the BrainPOP video will be used as an
introduction into the life of Martin Luther King Jr. The students and teacher will watch the video together, and
then the teacher will start up a classroom discussion asking if anyone has heard of Martin Luther King Jr. and
what they know about him. This discussion will take a couple minutes so there are a variety of answers given.
The teacher will then separate the classroom into groups. The groups will each get one big piece of paper as
well as some markers. The teacher will then tell students they are going to be researching the life of Martin
Luther King Jr. and they need to write as many facts as they can find during the time span of 30 minutes. Once
the 30 minutes is up, the teacher will ask each group to present their posters to the class and explain what
they learned about MLK’s life. This whole lesson will take about 45 minutes total and the students learning
will be assessed by evaluating the extent of knowledge gained as the students researched the life and
contributions of MLK.
The final product will be used to inform/differentiate learning by giving students the chance to present their
poster in any way they would like or if they wanted to memorize the facts they found instead of reading from
the poster, I would give them the opportunity to do that. To extend the students learning to a higher learning
level, I will have students focus on the events that took place during the time of Martin Luther King Jr’s life.
rather than the students finding fun facts. I will conclude the lesson by having the groups share their posters
and having them explain what they found about Martin Luther King through the video and through their own
internet searches. To provide feedback for this lesson, I will give students a chance to do peer evaluations.
This will allow the students to feel involved in their grading as well as giving me the opportunity to observe
how well the student did work together and if everyone contributed to the poster.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, the activities I have created will allow students to explore historical figures
that they could relate to in one way or another. I feel as if the activities will intrigue the students and will
encourage them to want to learn more about historical figures in Georgia. To further extend this lesson, I
would have students discover more historical figures of Georgia and will have them put together a skit that
they can present to the class. This skit will include students dressing like the historical figure they chose, and
explaining their contributions and achievements throughout their lifetime. Other technology tools that could
further enhance this project could be the usage of basic productivity tools such as PowerPoint or Microsoft
Word. The students could write speeches or put together a PowerPoint with pictures and artifacts about their
historical figure.
