Universal Design for Learning (UDL When addressing Universal Design principals, we must consider
Engagement, Representation, and Expression. In order to extend and support the learning experience
for each student, it is important to provide visual representation of the content. Visuals that can be
seen by everyone. This lesson allows the content to accessed by each student. There is video
representation with audio that allow ELL students to control the speed of their learning. Relating the
topic of Martin Luther King to the impact that he has had in our classrooms, schools, and lives. The
students can design their own graphic organizer and they have the ability to create their own design.
This activity is hands on.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will model how to identify the main topic and find
supporting details. The main topic is Martin Luther King as a hero. The teacher will watch the video
alongside the student and write down one fact that she found to be interesting. The project is to create
a graphic organizer and identify four supporting details. The Students will use this in order to create a
final essay using Microsoft word. The final project should be completed over a two-day period. The
students will be assessed on whether they complete the graphic organizer with the main topic and
supporting details. The student must have at least 4 supporting details in order to construct their
writing sample.
To conclude the lesson the students will have a Martin Luther King Library the students will take
turns doing read aloud of their stories. We will invite other Classes to observe our read aloud(s) The
students will compare the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement to some of the heroes we see today.
The students will then reflect on how they too can become a hero.to differentiate I would allow some
of the students to work with partners.
