Lesson idea implementation:

To open the lesson, the teacher will read the standard and tell the class what they will be learning. The
teacher may say something like “It is important to learn about these people from history because it shows us
where we came from and what happened before we were even here on earth.” The teacher will then briefly
discuss Martin Luther King Jr and give an overview of his life (assuming the class has already learned about
MLK Jr. prior to this lesson). Then the teacher will show the class the timeline she made for MLK Jr.

After a quick discussion of MLK Jr. and showing the students the timeline, the teacher will give the directions
for the assignment. In pairs, students will create their own timeline of any historical figure from Georgia listed
on the standards. The teacher will write the names of the historical figures on the board, and students will be
able to chose who to create a timeline for. The teacher will guide the students by showing them a tutorial of
how to create the timeline. Students will then have dedicated class time the next couple of days to research
the historical figure and create a timeline using the timeline tool on readwritethink.org. After the students are
finished, they will have a chance to present and show the class the timelines they created. This activity will
take 20/25 minutes of class time for 2 days. The first day will be focused on research and the second day will

be focused on creating the timeline. To asses and provide feedback for the students, the teacher will take
anecdotal notes and “grade” each student on a rubric that correlates to the timeline.
Reflective Practice:
I feel the activates created could impact student learning because they are not only learning about the
historical figure of Georgia, but are learning how to use Beyond the Basic Productivity Tools on the
internet. There are many other technology tools that could further enhance this project, like YouTube as
the students can use this video streaming website to watch videos on their historic figure. To further
extend this lesson, the students could collaborate and create an entire timeline of Georgia’s history.
