Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This activity is great for all students because it is a great visual for
displaying events. Many students do well when things are visually laid out for them and Timeline is a great
tool for this. It is also great for students who have difficulty with writing because they can put the events and
descriptions in on Timeline rather than having to write it on paper.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be asked to create a timeline based on the events that occurred throughout the time of civil
rights. They will have a list of important events and people during the era that they need to include. They will
do this using the Timeline online creating tool. Students will also be required to research a picture for each
event on their timeline.

To begin the lesson, we will watch the video I listed about Martin Luther King, Jr. This video is a good
introduction because he was a significant figure during this time period and many of the events in the
standard have to do with him. Once students have completed their timelines, they will share them with the
class. They will be assessed on how well they included each event or person and the accuracy of their
descriptions for each.

Reflective Practice: To expand on this lesson, students will be asked to write their own I Have a Dream
speeches. The students will be able to read these on the morning announcements throughout Black History
Month.
