Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

BrainPOP, as a tutorial site, supports UDL in the following ways:
 The audio and visual components of the video like, the caption availability and visuals, support
auditory and visual learners.
 ELL students are able to use this information because the videos are available in Spanish and French.

 Students with learning disabilities can watch the video as many times as needed and can also pause
the video to take notes when needed.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will introduce the study of Johnny Appleseed by sharing the video as a hook. The teacher will
let the students know that they will be doing their own research project where they will be collecting
information about someone of their choice. The teacher will challenge the students to try and pick out one
interesting fact from the video about Johnny Appleseed.
After watching the video, the teacher will use chart paper to write down the interesting facts from the
students. The teacher will then divide the class in to groups of two or three. The students will then find a spot
in the room where they can watch and listen to the video over Johnny Appleseed again. If the students
already found an interesting fact, they will be asked to find a different one that no one has picked. For those
students who couldn’t pick out an interesting fact, this will be their chance to review the video and find one.
The class will come back together as a whole and share the additional facts found, while the teacher adds
them to the chart paper. Once the list is finished, each student will be assigned one of the facts. As a class, the
students will create a timeline, using a timeline software, of the adventures of Johnny Appleseed. The
timeline will be uploaded to the classroom website as a reference and to share with others.
Reflective Practice:
To extend the lesson to a higher LoTi level, students will pick out someone that they would like to learn more
about (within the standards). The students will be divided up depending on the person they choose. For
example, if 3 students choose Harriet Tubman, then they would be grouped together. After all the students
are in their groups, they will separate into different areas of the classroom and watch/listen to the video over
the person they picked. Students will be asked to write down interesting facts about their person as they
watch the videos.
After all groups have had a chance to watch the video and jot down some interesting facts, they will be
asked to put together a PowerPoint presentation over the person of their choosing. The presentation should
include at least three interesting facts about the specific person. The teacher will make one big presentation
including all the slides from each person researched and will post it on the classroom website.
