Introduction of VSM
 The study of magnetic properties of materials
is a basic requirement for understanding
electronic behaviour in condensed matter.
Many varieties of inorganic compounds and
alloys of transition metals have been
synthesized wherein the electrons show
highly correlated behaviour
Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)
Working principle of VSM
 The VSM is based upon Faraday’s law according to which an e.m.f. is
induced in a conductor by a time-varying magnetic flux.
 In VSM, a sample magnetized by a homogenous magnetic field is
vibrated sinusoidally at a small fixed amplitude with respect to
stationary pick-up coils (Figure 1).
 Theresulting field change ∂B(t) at a point r inside the detection coils
induces voltage and is given by
