Reading Comprehension: Samantha’s Diet

Read the story carefully, then complete the tasks that follow:
Samantha Brown has always been over weight, but due the
lockdowns that followed the outbreak of the coronavirus last
year, she had put on a lot of weight. All her clothes were
becoming rather tight and she even broke a kitchen chair while
she was having breakfast with her mother. At that very moment,
she realised the seriousness of her situation and she decided to
go on a strict diet. Samantha and her mother sat together to
write a diet plan by listing all the unhealthy food that she
intends to give up. The list included most of her favourites like
fried breakfasts, fizzy drinks, crisps, fast food, doughnuts, cakes and chocolate.
The new list contained healthier options like fruit, vegetables, fresh juices and
grilled beef, lamb or chicken meat. Regular exercise was also added to the list. It
has been some time since I last heard from Samantha, so yesterday, I video called
her using FaceTime to see how she was getting on with her diet, but to my
surprise, a stranger answered my call. As/while I was apologising for calling the
wrong number, I was amazed to know that this person knew me. ‘Hello Anna’ she
said. I looked at her again and said, ‘Hello’ still not knowing who I was talking to.
‘Don’t you recognise me, Anna?’ The stranger asked. ‘No I am afraid I don’t’ I
answered hastily. It was only when I saw Mrs Brown walking around in the
background that I realised who I was taking to. ‘Oh, my God Samantha! Is that
you?’ I asked. ‘Yes, it is me’. ‘I have lost nearly 40 pounds over the past few months
and I feel so much better for it’ she explained. During our conversation she told
me how committed she was to the diet and how she changed her bad eating habits
to good ones. She is now healthier than before, more confident about herself and
even has a new job.
