HOMEWORK #1
Assigned: 19.04.2021
Due: 24.04.2021 (upload your solution to ODTÜCLASS until 17:00 pm)

Guidelines for homework submission:

1. Use an A-4 sized, white paper. Staple papers when necessary.
2. Provide proper units for all dimensional quantities. Omission or incorrect usage of units will
be penalized.
3. Your solution should be readable. Neatness may affect grading.
4. Cite all the references you used for the solution of the problems, such as tables, figures,
other books, internet, etc.
5. If you want, you may work as a group at most 2 people and submit one solution. Do not
forget to write the names of the group members on your solution if you work as a group.
6. Homework solution must be submitted to ODTÜCLASS before the due time as a
pdf file. The system will not allow late submissions.

Q1) A fixed amount of ammonia with a mass of 2 kg at an initial state of 1.5 bar, -20oC
is brought to a final state of 4 bar, 80oC in a polytropic process. Any heat transfer if it
occurs is from a reservoir at 200oC. Assume the dead state is To= 298 K, Po = 1 bar.
Calculate the:
(a) availability (exergy) change of the ammonia,
(b) irreversibility during the process,
(c) second-law efficiency for the process.

Q2) Steam enters a turbine with an isentropic efficiency of 90% at 6 MPa, 800°C. There
is a 49.7 kJ of heat loss from the turbine per kg of the steam flow. Steam exits the
turbine at 0.15 bar. Surroundings are at 1 bar, 20°C. Calculate:
(a) the actual specific work,
(b) the reversible specific work,
(c) the specific exergy destruction, and
(d) the second-law efficiency of the turbine.
