CHE 311 – HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

FALL, 2023
HOMEWORK 1

Due: October 19, 2023, Thursday 13:30 pm

Please follow the instructions below:

1. Prepare the assignments in group of two.

2. Make sure that your homework solution is neat and clear. Before starting the solution of the
problem, if not given, sketch the schematic of the system labeled with all data/information given
and state your assumptions/details to get the full credit for your homework. Unreadable and
messy solutions may not be fully graded. In your solutions, pay attention to use the notations used
in the textbook. Otherwise, your solution will not be accepted.
3. Submit your hand solutions to the TAs before the lecture starts on the due date indicated
above.
4. Late submissions will be subjected to a penalty of 10 points reduction per day.

Q1) Iced water is kept at 0°C in a spherical tank with an inner diameter of 3 m and a thickness of
1 cm of stainless steel. The tank is outside at a temperature of 25 °C. Considering that the entire
steel tank is at 0°C and has a negligible thermal resistance, determine (a) the rate of heat transfer
to the iced water in the tank and (b) the amount of ice at 0°C that melts during a 24 h period. The
heat of fusion of water at atmospheric pressure is hsf=333.7 kJ/kg. The emissivity of the outer
surface of the tank is 0.65, and the convection heat transfer coefficient on the outer surface can be
taken to be 20 W/m2·K. Assume the average surrounding surface temperature for radiation
exchange to be 15°C.
Q2) In a car park, a car's roof absorbs 600 W/m2 of solar radiation while the underside is
completely insulated. The roof's convection coefficient with the surrounding air is 10 W/m2 K.

a) Neglecting radiation exchange with the surroundings, calculate the temperature of the roof
under steady- state conditions if the ambient air temperature is 20oC.
b) For the same ambient air temperature, calculate the temperature of the roof if its surface
emissivity is 0.75.
c) The convection coefficient depends on airflow con-ditions over the roof, increasing with
increasing air speed. Compute and plot the roof temperature as a function of h 2≤h≤

200W/m2 K.

Q3) A room where the air is 18°C and the walls are 12°C has an electric heater with a total surface
area of 0.35 m2 and an emissivity of 0.85. The heater's surface maintains a constant temperature
of 120 °C at 400 W of electric power consumption. When the heater uses 600 W, find the
temperature of the heater's surface. (a) assuming negligible radiation and (b) taking radiation into
consideration. Based on your results, comment on the assumption made in part (a).
Q4) Usually, electrically heated draw batch furnaces are used for reheating and heat treatment
processes in the steel industry. Consider a furnace that is placed in a space with a surrounding air
temperature of 30°C and an average convection heat transfer coefficient of 12 W/m2K. The 18 mm
thick, 20 W/mK thermal conductivity steel plate used to construct the furnace front. A heat flux of
8 kW/m2 is applied to the interior surface of the furnace, which has an emissivity of 0.23 on the
front surface. Determine the furnace's front's outer surface temperature.
