1. Note that this homework is only for Sections 1, 4, and 5. Students of Sections 2 and 3 have a different Homework 2 assignment on ODTUClass and they are not responsible from this homework. Those who will submit the homework as a group should select the group members accordingly. 2. You are encouraged to work in groups of up to three students and turn in a single homework for the entire group. Make sure the names of all the students who contributed appear on the homework sheet. If you wish, you may turn in individual homework as well. Your homework grade will not be affected whether you work as an individual or within a group. We hope that you will use the group homework as a vehicle for cooperative teaching and learning as well as a time-saving device. 3. Late submissions will not be accepted. It is each group member's responsibility that the homework is turned in on time. 4. You will submit your homework through ODTUClass. It can be hand written or typed. Make sure it is in PDF format. 5. Provide proper and consistent units for all dimensional quantities. Convert the units if necessary. Omission or incorrect usage of units will cause grade reduction. 6. Your solution should be readable. Neatness will affect grading. 7. Cite all the references you used for the solution of the problems, such as, tables, figures, appendices, other books, internet, etc. 8. The following information must be provided on the submitted homework: Name, Last name, ID number. 9. The assistants will have full responsibility regarding homework, so if you have any issues, you should contact them first. 1. The frictionless piston of the piston/cylinder device shown in the figure is free to move between two sets of stops. When the piston is on the lower stops, the volume of the cylinder is 400 L. When the piston reaches the upper stops, the volume is 600 L. The cylinder contains water initially at 100 kPa, 20 % quality. The water is slowly heated until it becomes all saturated vapor. 300 kPa pressure is needed to rise the piston and move it Water against its mass and the outside ambient pressure. Determine the final pressure in the cylinder, and heat transfer and work for the water in the process. Also, show the process on properly labeled p-v and T-v diagrams, with respect to the saturation curve and relevant constant property lines.
2. Two kilograms of carbon monoxide, initially at
347oC, is contained in the frictionless piston/cylinder device as shown. The cylinder has a mass of 500 kg Carbon g = 9.81 m/s2 and the piston has an area of 0.01 m2. Atmospheric Monoxide pressure is 100 kPa. In the process, a paddle wheel located inside the cylinder transfers 1000 kJ to the carbon monoxide, while 500 kJ of heat loss occurs from the carbon monoxide. Assuming ideal gas behavior, determine the final temperature and pressure for the carbon monoxide.
