Centurion Lambert Mascar-
enhas, writer and freedom
fighter, who operated a news-
paper dedicated to Goa's free-
dom struggle, died at his Dona
Paula residence on Sunday.
He was 106 and is survived
by wife Dr Jolly Mascarenhas,
daughters Nayantara, Ameeta,
Anjali and son Jude, grand-
children and great-grand-
daughter Zara.
Mascarenhas was a promi-
nent journalist in post-Libera-
tion Goa and was joint editor
of The Navhind Times when
it launched in the early 1960s
soon after liberation.
He was conferred the Pad-
ma Shree by the government
of India while the State gov-
ernment had awarded him the
Gomant Vibhushan. In 2004,
he was awarded the Laxmidas
Borkar Memorial Award for

Mascarenhas has also au-
thored books including the
critically acclaimed "Sorrow-
ing lies my land."

and ‘The Greater Tragedy’ --
are much read and still in de-
mand.
Born on September 17, 1914,
in Goa, Mascarenhas was edu-
cated in Pune and Mumbai at
St Xavier’s College.
His career as a journalist be-
gan in Mumbai with the ‘Morn-
ing Standard’ and later he
worked as a sub-editor at the
‘Bombay Sentinel’ and as an
assistant editor at ‘Onlooker’.
He edited ‘Goan Tribute’
which exposed the cause of
Goa’s liberation. He wrote nu-
merous articles against the
Portuguese colonial regime in
Goa and caught the attention
of both the Indian leaders as
well as the Portuguese rulers.
While on a visit to Goa, he
was arrested and jailed by the
Portuguese for his articles and
later was released on bail and

Lourenco have been sent to
the party's Delhi high com-
mand by Goa desk in-charge
Dinesh Gundu Rao for the
position of Goa Pradesh Con-
gress Committee President.
It is learned, Rao has given
more preference to Sardinha-

As per information received
from sources, Congress ob-
server Prakash Rathod, Man-
sur Khan and Gundu Rao held
a meeting on Thursday to de-
liberate on the issue.
In the meeting, the discus-
sion was largely centred on
the present political scenario

gest names of the two heavy-

However, Sardinha and
Reginaldo have declined to
comment. The latter said it was
not right to say anything at this

However, Chodankar's
supporters are claiming that
he will retain the position
of GPCC president. "We are
confident that Girish will
be retained as GPCC presi-

grievance officer for India has
stepped down, leaving the
micro-blogging site without a
grievance official as mandat-
ed by the new IT rules to ad-
dress complaints from Indian
subscribers.
The source said that Dhar-
mendra Chatur, who was re-
cently appointed as interim
resident grievance officer for
India by Twitter, has quit from
the post. The social media
company's website no longer
displays his name, as required
under Information Technolo-
gy (Intermediary Guidelines
and Digital Media Ethics
Code) Rules 2021. Twitter de-
clined to comment on the de-
velopment.
The development comes at
a time when the micro-blog-
ging platform has been en-
gaged in a tussle with the

In what is believed to be the
first use of drones in a terror
attack on an Indian military
facility, two blasts took place
at the Air Force base in Jam-
mu Airport in the early hours
of Sunday.
Two Indian Air Force (IAF)
personnel suffered minor in-
juries in the explosions that
took place a little before 2 am
at the high security airport lo-
cated around 14 km from the
border with Pakistan.
Reports say the explosions,
at 1.37 am and 1.43 am, were
heard a km away.
One of the blasts caused
damage to the roof of a build-
ing in the technical section
while another bomb exploded
in an open area.
"The attack at the IAF sta-
tion in Jammu is a terror at-
tack," said Jammu and Kash-
mir police chief Dilbag Singh.
An FIR has been registered
under the anti-terror Unlaw-
ful Activities (Prevention) Act
that allows the arrest of sus-
pects and their detention for
up to six months without ev-
idence. The National Investi-
gation Agency has taken over
the probe.
Teams from the IAF, the Na-
tional Bomb Data Centre, fo-
rensic experts and the Jammu
and Kashmir police are also
investigating the attack.
The police chief said an-
other major strike was avert-
ed when a terrorist, believed
to be working for the Pa-
kistan-based outfit Lashk-
er-e-Taiba, was arrested with
an IED (Improvised Explosive
Device) that was to be used for
a strike "in a crowded place".
The arrest is not linked to the
airport attack, Dilbagh Singh
said.
The Jammu airport is a
dual-use facility under IAF
control and also used to
operate passenger flights.
Jammu Airport director Pra-
vat Ranjan Beuria told PTI
there was no disruption
in flights.

Officials of Facebook and
Google have been summoned
by the Parliamentary Stand-
ing Committee on Information
Technology Tuesday to dis-
cuss the issue of safeguarding
citizens' rights and prevent-
ing the misuse of online plat-
forms.
The official agenda circu-
lated among the members of
the panel, which is headed
by Congress MP Shashi Tha-
roor, said, "To hear the views
of representatives of Face-
book India and Google India
on the subject 'Safeguarding
citizens' rights and preven-
tion of misuse of social/on-
line news media platforms
including special emphasis
on women security in the
digital space."
Earlier, representatives of
Facebook had informed the
Parliamentary committee
that their company's poli-
cies do not allow officials to
appear in person due to the
Covid-19 protocols. But the
panel's chairman Mr Tharoor
told Facebook that its officials
will have to appear in person
since the Parliament Secre-
tariat does not allow virtual
meetings.
The committee would also
summon representatives from
YouTube and other social me-
dia platforms in the coming
days to hold discussions on
the same issues.

sprawling residence at Agua-

has hit a roadblock.
A Kolkata firm - Credwyn
Holdings India Pvt Ltd - has
moved court and successfully
obtained a stay against any
proceedings and legal formal-
ities for the sale of the prop-
erty from the Kolkata High
Court.
A public notice issued by
the lawyer for the firm San-
jay Ginodia said a suit had
been filed in the Calcutta High
Court back in 2016 for recov-
ery of loans to the tune of Rs
3.29 crore from Gazdar.
The suit was ongoing
when Gazdar died and me-
dia reports recently said the
property is being bought
by the GVR group from the
late Parsi businessman's
heir.
Ginodia in his public notice
on behalf of his client Cred-
wyn Holdings India Pvt Ltd
said, that an application was
moved before the Calcutta
High Court after a report in the
Kolkata edition of Econom-
ic Times on June 12 reported
that Gazdar had died and that
his property is in the process
of being sold by his heir Rita
Mehta.
"The Honourable High
Court was pleased to pass an
order dated 24th June, 2021,
directing that inter-alia, that
there shall be an order of re-
straint from sale, transfer,
etc., of the said property," Gi-

An odd case that came to light
recently is the lone malaria
case that has been detected in
the commercial capital so far,
ringing in good news on the
malaria and dengue front this
season.
The Margao Urban Health
Centre, however, is not in any
way lowering its guard in the
battle against malaria and
dengue, which had wrought
havoc in the commercial cap-
ital a year ago.
In fact, while the Margao
UHC officials are all pre-occu-
pied and working round the
clock in the battle against Cov-
id, the field workers have not
in any way ignored the threat
posed by the vector-borne dis-
eases, including malaria and
dengue.
Margao Urban Health Of-
ficer, Dr Anju Kharangate
was quick to point out that
not a single dengue case has
been reported from the city
so far this season. And, she
informed that the lone case
of malaria detected at a con-
struction site in the city was
in respect to a worker, hailing
from the neighbouring state
of Karnataka. “We have so far
detected a lone malaria case
in Margao. There was anoth-
er case, which pertained to an
area outside our jurisdiction,”
Dr Anju added.
She, however, hastened to
add that the health workers
have not lowered their guard
in any way, implementing all
the measures to control vec-
tor-borne diseases in the city.
In fact, Margao UHC field
workers have hit the ground,
as they have fanned out to var-
ious places in the city, mov-
ing door-to-door to distribute
pamphlets to the households
on the measures required to
keep the mosquitoes at bay
and to carry out the spraying
of insecticides at construction

three months short of his
107th birthday. He was the
author of the widely-noticed
work ‘Sorrowing Lies My
Land’, freedom-fighter, edi-
tor and journalist.
TRIBUTE TO LAMBERT
MASCARENHAS
His death was quickly noted
among journalistic and literary
circles especially those study-
ing Goan writing as far away as
in Brazil and Portugal, as also
among members of the diaspo-
ra, and others.
Lambert was particularly
known for being founder-ed-
itor of the ‘Goa Today’ maga-
zine, his early role in post-Lib-
eration English-language
journalism in Goa, and his role
as a freedom fighter in the city
of Bombay.
Since its launch in 1966, ‘Goa
Today’ the monthly he was
founder-editor of and co-found-
ed (with Dan Dantas) grew into
a prominent voice and mag-
azine-of-record of Goa, but
specifically for diasporic Goan
communities scattered across
the globe. For long, it was the
lone monthly from Goa.
The Goa Today was run by
Mascarenhas till the 1980s,
when it was sold to the Salgaoc-
ars. It faced a suspension of pub-
lication just last month due to
pandemic-related pressures and
other issues, amidst sharp con-
cern over its possible demise.

In a press note, GSIA Pres-
ident Damodar Kochkar said
the free vaccination drive for
industrial workers began in
Kundaim from Wednesday.

tre is conducting a free vac-
cination drive on Saturday
and Sunday from 9.30 am to 4

attention of the Civic Chief to
their plight in handling gar-
bage, right from the collection
of waste from the city to its dis-
posal at Sonsodo.
The MMC Chief Lyndon
Pereira descended at the Mu-
nicipal Garage at the Old mar-
ket to hear the grievances of the
workers engaged in the work of
collection and disposal of gar-
bage.
The workers pointed out that
the road leading to the Sonso-
do waste treatment plant has
turned unmotorable and de-
manded early repairs and resto-
ration of the road at the earliest.
After giving a patient hear-
ing, the MMC Chief assured the
workers that the road leading
to the garbage treatment plant
will be taken up on priority,
pointing out that the Director of
Municipal Administration has
given sanction for the repair of
the road.
The MMC later told the me-
dia that his visit was aimed at
streamlining the system in the
collection and disposal of the
waste.

howa National Park of Assam,
after they were rendered
homeless some 70 years ago,

facilities like electricity, drink-
ing water and roads even now.
It is a tale of negligence,
apathy, and suffering due to
inaction of the government
machinery, they said.
Aranya Kasari, a quadrage-
narian from Laika, said, Our
children trek for miles and
cross a river to reach school.
There is no provision of min-
imum healthcare or drinking
water supply, Kasari said.
"We want to move out of
here, the sooner the better.
We have lived for genera-
tions here. I don't want the
next generation to go through
the same ordeal. Can you
imagine a life without even the
basic amenities?
"Electricity or a motorable
road in the core area of a park
is unthinkable. We don't even
have basic human rights. We
are cut off from the rest of the
world. There is no TV and we
hardly get to read a newspa-

“We have been sitting in this dense forest for the last one year
and taking exams online,” said Nisha Gavkar, who is studying in
Parye Bhumika Higher Secondary School. We do not know what
to do, she added.
Another student Punaji Gavkar said that the government has
started online education in villages where networking is not
available.
When contacted, local panchayat member Suryakant Gavkar
said the network issue will resolved once the tower set up in the
vilage gets power connection. Like the students of this hamlet,
the story in other rural areas remains the same. While the gov-
ernment was aware of this situation during the last lockdown,
not much seems to have been done to alleviate the students’
and teachers’ online learning plight.

Cautioning people that the
threat of COVID-19 remains,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on Sunday urged them to shed
vaccine hesitancy and get
themselves inoculated soon.
In his monthly Mann ki
Baat broadcast, Modi sought
to tackle vaccine hesitancy,
which has been seen in a sec-
tion of the population, and
spoke to some residents of
Dulariya village, a tribal area
in Betul district of Madhya
Pradesh, as they shared fears
and doubts being spread
about the jabs.
The prime minister noted
that both he and his near-
ly 100-year-old mother have
taken both doses of the vac-
cine and asked people to trust
science and scientists, and to
work to dispel rumours.
If someone says corona is
gone, do not be under this
mistaken notion, Modi said,
adding that the virus ailment
is a “master of disguise”
which surfaces in myriad new
forms, a reference to its mu-
tants.
“And to protect ourselves
from it, we have two ways.
One is adhering to the
protocol for corona; wearing
a mask, frequently washing
hands with soap, maintaining
social distancing. The other
way is, along with all this,
getting vaccinated. This too is
a good safety shield,” he said.
Modi hailed the feat of ad-
ministering over 86 lakh vac-
cine doses in a single day on
June 21 at the start of the new
phase of inoculation under
which all adults are being giv-
en free jabs by the Union gov-
ernment.
Over 31 crore people have
got themselves vaccinated so
far, he noted.
With the National Doctors
Day falling on July 1, Modi
lauded the contribution of
doctors in the corona period
and said the day has become
all the more special this time.
He also paid tributes to
Guru Prasad Mohapatra,
secretary in his government
who died due to Covid
recently, saying that the
officer worked overtime to
make arrangements to ramp
up oxygen production and
supply during the recent wave
even as he was battling the
disease himself.
“Corona has snatched
him away from us. There are
countless people who have
never been discussed. Our
tribute to every such person
would be that we follow the
Covid protocol fully, get our
vaccinations done,” Modi
said.
With the Monsoon season
gathering pace, the prime
minister also stressed on wa-
ter conservation and likened
it to serving the nation.
In this context, he men-
tioned Satchidanand Bharti
of Pauri Garhwal in Uttara-
khand, a teacher whose hard
work, Modi added, in conserv-

In his broadcast, he also
paid tributes and remembered
the contribution of Indian
sprint legend Milkha Singh,
who died earlier this month.

Former Dempo defender Barreto passes away

Former Goa and Dempo foot-
baller Felix Barreto breathed
his last Sunday morning after
a brief illness.
He was undergoing treat-
ment at Goa Medical College
and Hospital and had report-
edly tested positive for Cov-
id-19.
One of Goa’s best defend-
ers, Felix was the mainstay of
Dempo SC’s defensive quar-
tet, comprising of Socorro
Coutinho, Nicholas Pereira
and Rosario Rodrigues. He
was among the four shortlist-
ed players for the Indian camp
in 1976 but did not make the fi-
nal team.
Having offers from vari-
ous top clubs in India, Felix
stayed loyal to Dempo for 12
years, until his retirement in
1980. During this period, he
helped Dempo win the Rov-
ers Cup, Stafford Cup, Nizam
Trophy, the Bandodkar Gold
Trophy, the Goa League and
many other local and national
tournaments.
Starting his football career
in his village Chinchinim, Fe-
lix was groomed by Goa’s first
NIS-qualified coach, Cyril Fer-
rao. Before joining Dempo, Fe-
lix played for Shantilal Sports
Club.
After retiring as an active
player, Felix took up coach-
ing. He was the coach of Sal-
cete Football Club for over
six years during the 1990s.
Under his guidance Salcete
FC achieved great success,
winning the Mini Rovers Cup,
the West Zone Federation Cup
and many other trophies. Sal-
cete FC were runners-up in
the Bandodkar Gold Trophy
in 1991 and the Goa League
in the same year. He groomed
many players who went on to
play for top clubs as well as
the national team.
After retiring as the manag-
er of the Dempo Store in Mar-
gao, Felix continued with his
association with the game.
He was a committee member
of CRC Chinchinim and the
coach of the Chinchinim U-14
team and an active member of
Salcete FC and Association for
the Wellbeing of Elder Sport-
spersons (AWES). He was a
regular at the CRC ground
where he used to go for walks

Felix never forgot his old
colleagues. Along with other
members of AWES he visited
them regularly, especially to
wish them on their birthdays
or when they were unwell.
Humble, unassuming but
with tremendous knowledge
of the game, Felix was happy
to share his vast experience
and advise other coaches and
young players.
He will be missed, not only
by his sons Rivelino and Plati-
no and their families but also
by his vast circle of friends
and his colleagues in CRC
Chinchinim, Salcete FC and
AWES.
Many big names in Goan
and Indian football paid trib-
ute to Barreto, including for-
mer India and Dempo coach
Armando Colaco.
“A football legend and a
great human being... He al-
ways encouraged and mo-
tivated me at Dempo. Felix
was a great friend too,” Co-
laco said in his condolence
message.
Shabir Ali, former India
striker and coach of Salgoo-
car and ITI, said “We played
against Dempo in the Rovers
Cup for Mafatlal Mills and Ta-
tas. He was a tough defender.
Barreto’s death is a big loss
to Goan football. My deepest
condolences to his family and
loved ones. May his soul rest
in peace.”
“I’ve known Felix well. He
was a lively and kind-heart-
ed person. He served Dem-
po with great dedication and
sincerity. He will be missed,”
said Anil Kamat, Director of
Competitions, All India Foot-
ball Federation.
“Felix Barreto’s demise is
a big loss to Chinchinim and
Goan football. We worked
together for the refurbish-
ment of CRC Ground. He
gave everything to the club.
We will miss him,” said Cyr-
il Leitao, president of CRC
Chinchinim.
Mauricio Afonso, former In-
dia captain and Dempo mid-
fielder, said “I met him many
times during his playing days.
He was a perfect gentleman.
I saw him play when I was
young. He was a great foot-
baller.”
Alvito D’Cunha, former
East Bengal star, stated, “Fe-
lix Barreto’s demise is a big
loss to Goa and Chinchinim.
He was my first coach at Sal-
cete Football Club. My deepest
condolences to his family and
loved ones.”
