Covid hits R-day parade, only 5k guests
allowed; Capital under high-security cover
NEW DELHI: The spectator count at
India’s biggest ceremonial event, the
Republic Day parade, will be mas-
sively curtailed this year due to Cov-
id-related restrictions. Only 5,000 to
8,000 people will be allowed entry to
Rajpath to witness the spectacular
display of the country’s military
might and cultural heritage, top offi-
cials said on Tuesday.
“We do not want the parade to
become a super-spreader event in the
midst of the third Covid wave. The
number of spectators has been signif-
icantly curtailed. We are still working
on the final numbers but it’s going to
be between 5,000 and 8,000 people”
said one of the officials cited above.

and above will be allowed entry.

NEW DELHI: A new disinfection tech-
nology developed by the ministry of
science and technology is totally
effective in the mitigation of airborne
transmission of SARS-COV-2 and it is
being installed in railway coaches,
air-conditioned buses and other
closed spaces to combat the Covid-19
pandemic, Union minister Jitendra
Singh said on Monday.
He said the Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research (CSIR) will
write to the Election Commission
(EC) for the use of the technology
during indoor meetings with a lim-
ited capacity for the ensuing Assem-
bly polls in five states in the wake of
the poll panel’s ban on physical ral-
lies and roadshows for a specified
period of time.
The Union minister of state (inde-
pendent charge) for science and tech-
nology said the disinfection technol-
ogy has been successfully tried in
railway coaches, air-conditioned
buses and even in the Parliament
House and is now open for a general

Covid-19: More than
2.3L fresh cases,
310 deaths reported
NEW DELHI: With over 2.38 lakh new
coronavirus infections being
reported in a day, India’s total tally of
Covid-19 cases rose to over 3.76 crore,
which includes 8,891 cases of the
Omicron variant, according to the
Union health ministry data updated
on Tuesday.
The active cases have increased to
17.36 lakh, the highest in 230 days,
while the death toll has climbed to
4.86 lakh, with 310 fresh fatalities,
the data updated at 8 am stated.
There has been an 8.31% increase
in Omicron cases since Monday, the
ministry said.
Experts said it is not possible to
undertake genome sequencing of
each and every sample but stressed
that the current wave is largely being
driven by the Omicron variant.
The active cases comprise 4.62% of
the total infections, while the
national Covid-19 recovery rate has
decreased to 94.09%, the ministry
said. An increase of 80,287 cases has
been recorded in the active Covid-19
caseload in a span of 24 hours. PTI

Delhi records 11,684 Covid
cases, 38 more fatalities
NEW DELHI: Delhi logged 11,684 fresh Covid-19
cases and 38 more deaths due to the viral dis-
ease on Tuesday, while the positivity rate
declined to 22.47%, according to a bulletin
issued by the city health department. The
national capital had reported 12,527 fresh
Covid cases and 24 deaths due to the disease
on Monday. A total of 52,002 tests were con-
ducted to detect the infection on Monday,
higher than the 44,762 tests carried out on
Sunday. A total of 2,730 patients are admitted
to hospitals, including 139 on ventilator. The
case tally has climbed to 17.34 lakh in Delhi
while the death toll due to Covid has gone up
to 25,425. The number of active cases in the
city stands at 78,112, including 63,432 patients
in home isolation. PTI

NEW DELHI: The minimum temperature in
Delhi on Tuesday settled at 8.5°C, a notch
above the normal, according to official data.
On Monday morning too, the Safdarjung
Observatory had recorded almost a similar
reading with 8.7°C, two notches above the
average. The relative humidity at 8.30 am
stood at 90%, according to the data shared by
the India Meteorological Department. The
maximum temperature on Tuesday is likely to
hover around 17°C.
On Monday, the city had shivered in biting
cold as it had registered a high of 16.1°C, four
notches below the normal. The air quality
index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded in the ‘very
poor’ category (339) in the morning, data from

(NDMC) will develop four of its major gardens
–-Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, Talkatora Gar-
den and Sanjay Jheel –- into world-class facili-
ties with smart lighting, upgraded nursery
and walking tracks, among other things, offi-
cials said on Monday.
“NDMC takes pride in its gardens and
intends to now further develop them in a
manner befitting their location. It is proposed
in this year’s budget to get all the designs
finalised by engaging a consultant under
NDMC Smart City Projects for four major gar-
dens. The consultant for the project would be
appointed,” NDMC vice chairman Satish
Upadhyay said. “The idea is to give visitors a

Twin earthquakes hit
western Afghanistan,
at least 26 killed
HERAT: Rescue workers on Tuesday
searched for survivors after an earth-
quake in a remote western region of
Afghanistan killed at least 26 people
and damaged hundreds of houses,
officials said. Monday’s 5.3-magnitude
shallow quake jolted the province of
Badghis and wrecked houses, mostly
in the Qadis district – a rural area not
easily accessible by road. “The earth-
quake caused massive damage to
houses, about 700 to 1,000 have been
damaged,” Badghis provincial spokes-
man Baz Mohammad Sarwary said.
“There is the possibility that the casu-
alties could increase.” A Taliban team
was in the area assisting in the relief
work. Some of the victims died when
the roofs of their houses collapsed,

Europe won’t meet its goal of zero car-
bon emissions by the year 2050 if
countries don’t adopt more stringent

research centre concluded. Buildings

ing to estimates by the European
Commission which has targeted the

For this drive, ASN joined hands
with 32 schools of Delhi-NCR. This
year’s highlight was the drive to col-
lect MLPs at school for safe disposal.
To ensure that the learning contin-
ued even during the Covid-19 pan-
demic, the school seamlessly
switched to online platform and col-
laborated with the parents who too
became part of this campaign.
Their assistance in online mode as
partners in education is praisewor-
thy. With the help of its eco-commit-
tee, ASN organised various webinars
for the parents to help the students
with segregation of waste at source
and collection of MLPs. As part of
LLC, an online training session was
also conducted for the representa-
tives of the schools to take up the
project in their respective schools.
ASN students actively participated
in multifarious activities like the MLP
collection, podcasts creation, engag-
ing themselves in plogging, conduct-
ing surveys and audits, presenting
creative ideas in the form of videos,
tracking waste, educating about 5Rs
and creating a new useful product
from the waste collected at home.
They also came up with surprising
ideas and re-used and re-cycled as
much waste as possible. The positive
learning was clearly visible through
their actions as they were able to dis-
pose more than 11,000 MLPs in a
responsible manner.

Van den Bergh was a founding
member of the Jewish Council, an

deportations from the Netherlands.
Investigators found he had initially
managed to get his family exempted
from being transported. But this was
revoked around the time of the raid on
the Franks, leading them to suspect he
may have betrayed their hiding place
to save his own children.
‘Terrible things’
The findings, published in full in
Rosemary Sullivan’s book “The
Betrayal of Anne Frank”, are already
provoking soul-searching in the Neth-
erlands. Ronald Leopold, executive
director of the Anne Frank House, told
AFP that the probe had “generated
important new information”. But he
said that questions remained, in par-
ticular about who had sent the anony-
mous note, and why.
“You have to be very careful about
sending someone down in history as a
traitor to Anne Frank if you are not
100 or 200% sure about that,” he
added.

study, our results suggest that poten-
tially active virus may sometimes
persist beyond a 10 day period, and
could pose a potential risk of onward
transmission,” said professor Lorna
Harries, of the University of Exeter
Medical School, who oversaw the

people, which means we wouldn’t be
able to predict who they are,” Har-

JERUSALEM: Fourth doses of the Pfizer
and Moderna vaccines against Cov-
id-19 are only ‘partially’ effective for
the Omicron variant of the virus, the
authors of an Israeli trial said Mon-
day.
A team from Sheba Medical Center
near Tel Aviv began conducting a
trial in December on fourth doses of
coronavirus vaccines, inoculating 154
hospital personnel with Pfizer jabs
and 120 other volunteers with Mod-
erna doses.
Preliminary results of the trial
“have shown that the vaccines are
safe and have shown to produce sub-
stantial antibodies, but are only par-
tially effective in defending against
the Omicron variant,” the hospital
said in a statement.
Professor Gili Regev-Yochay, who
leads the study, said that while there
was an increase in antibodies after
administering a fourth dose, it none-
theless “only offers a partial defencer
against the virus” for those infected
with the Omicron variant.
The vaccines were “extremely
effective against the earlier variants,”
Regev-Yochay noted.
More than 537,000 Israelis have
received a fourth dose of vaccine,
according to the health ministry’s lat-
est figures.
Reduced quarantine
Meanwhile, the Israeli government
on Monday said it was reducing the
quarantine period for positive cases
from seven to five days, as a record
number of infections threatens to
overburden the economy.

Spezia stun AC Milan
in dying seconds
MILAN: Emmanuel Gyasi coolly fin-
ished a 96th minute counter-attack to
give Spezia their first Serie A victory
away to AC Milan, 2-1, on Monday.
Milan missed a chance to overtake
Inter at the top of Serie A while third-
place Napoli closed to within two
points with a 2-0 win in Bologna.
Milan dominated much of the game
but spurned a host of chances.
In the 44 minute, Rafael Leao
escaped behind the Spezia half but
was flattened by goalie Ivan Provedel.
Theo Hernandez fired the penalty
wide. A minute later Leao escaped
again and this time lobbed Provedel to
give Milan the lead. Spezia hit back
when Kevin Agudelo, finding a huge
hole in the home defence, tapped in a
Daniele Verde cross at the near post
after 64 minutes.
As the game entered five minutes of
added time, Junior Messias put the
ball in the net for Milan, but the ref-
eree had already whistled for a foul.
Milan coach Stefano Pioli blamed
that decision for what happened next.

MELBOURNE: Andy Murray turned
back the clock in typically combative
style and favourite Daniil Medvedev
set up a blockbuster second round
showdown with Nick Kyrgios at the
Australian Open on Tuesday.
In the women’s draw, top-10 seeds
Garbine Muguruza, Iga Swiatek and
Anett Kontaveit all made comfortable
starts to their Melbourne title charges
while Simona Halep and Aryna Sabal-
enka also won despite struggling with

Emma Raducanu, the US Open

Rahul on Tuesday hinted that all-
rounder Venkatesh Iyer is likely to be
groomed as the additional pace bowl-
ing option that the team has lacked
ever since Hardik Pandya’s back
injury while declaring that he will
open alongside veteran Shikhar
Dhawan in the first ODI against
South Africa here.
Rahul’s media interaction was a
clear indication that Ruturaj Gaikwad
might have to wait for his turn and the
pitch at Boland Park might prompt
the team management to play both
specialist spinners—Ravichandran
Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.
“In the past 12-15 months, I have
batted in various positions because
that is what the team needed of me
then and now with Rohit (Sharma)
not being there, I will bat at the top of
the order,” the skipper informed
ahead of the opening game.
A sixth bowler, preferably seam or
pace option, has been India’s major
headache for past two and half years
due to Pandya’s injury and now the
team management is “excited” look-
ing at what Venkatesh brings to the

reached a career-high 13th in the lat-
est badminton world rankings after
winning the men’s singles crown in
the India Open, a title triumph in
which also lifted the men’s doubles
duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and
Chirag Shetty to eighth place.

seventh and 10th spots respectively.
Sen made a jump of four places,
