What is emotional intelligence in leadership?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive and identify your own emotions as well as the

emotions of others.

Analytical skills, experience, and attitude are all characteristics that most executives and

organizational leaders possess, yet one quality is over looked in most successful managers that is

perhaps the most important characteristic, and that is emotional intelligence. Emotional

intelligence is the ability to monitor the emotions and feelings of oneself and others, while the

person (leader) is able to understand and manage the feelings and emotions of others. Emotional

intelligence emphasizes how your feelings and emotions affect others and how you can use that

knowledge to create positive outcomes.

The emotional intelligence approach in leadership today goes beyond the traditional leadership

style, and high emotional intelligence is increasingly recognize as important in organizations due

to the increasing complexity of society. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the subject

of emotional intelligence among researchers and counselors in the fields of psychology,

education, and especially management. Leadership theories imply that emotional intelligence is

important to leaders and managers as a cognitive and behavioral complexity, and that flexibility

is an important characteristic of competent leaders.

However, there is little empirical evidence regarding emotional intelligence and their

subordinates and the results of their work. One of the reasons for this lack of evidence could be

the lack of accurate measurements from the psychological and practical point of view of

emotional intelligence. A team of Chinese scientists from the University of Hong Kong has been

trying to develop such an assessment and provide exploratory evidence for the impact of

emotional intelligence on the work outcomes of leaders and their followers.

The importance of emotional intelligence in personal relationships:

Plato said that what a person learns has an emotional basis in him, which is proven in each

person. Just as when learning done with interest, there are positive emotions about learning, the

learning process itself becomes easier for memory.

Studies have shown that people with high intelligence could not achieve significant performance

in the workplace. There are emotional components that do not appear in the classic form of

intelligence (mental intelligence) but strongly affect work performance and social success.

There are human qualities that promote success. Studies have shown that people with high

emotional intelligence achieve high performance in sales or management where success closely

related to the ability to understand and use interpersonal relationships. This concept increasingly

used where the emphasis is on interaction between people. Self-awareness is the first step

towards effective emotional intelligence and leadership, because some people are unable to

recognize their emotional states and reactions and eventually succumb to their dysfunctional

pattern of behavior, thus failing to effectively guide others.

The importance of mind regulation and control:

Mental regulation is especially important for leaders, because those who cannot control their

emotions, those whose anger causes themselves and others to be harmed, can have sudden effects

that spread rapidly throughout the organization. In the process of self-knowledge, it is important

for leaders to discover what can make them feel rebellious.

Another approach to emotional intelligence is active listening, nonverbal communication, and

interpretation. The ability to interpret and use one's own and others' emotional states effectively

in an art organization can improve the situation or, conversely, destroy relationships, so that

negative emotions often alienate the individual, prevent self-reflection, and cause There is mental

and physical stress. Positive emotion, which results from high emotional intelligence, creates

pleasant relationships with others, stimulates an adventurous spirit that discovers unknown

things, and makes a person not passive. High emotional intelligence leads to stronger, stronger

interpersonal relationships, personal motivation and increased motivation for others, activity,

innovation and creativity, high performance as a leader, better work under pressure and better

adaptation to change and most importantly inner peace.

Emotional intelligence gives leaders the tools to manage their own feelings during any major change and

enables a positive mood to be nurtured that helps rather than hinders the path ahead. The cultural

When leaders understand and can influence their subordinates' emotions, they enable them to

emotional intelligence includes those emotional skills or abilities that rely on a leader's ability to

make fundamental changes in the organization.
