Dear Bear Band parents,
Welcome to band at BDJH! My name is Lela Kemp, and along with Jonathan Churak-Simpson, I am one of your
assistant band directors. Our head band director is Susan Steber. We are all excited to work with your kids this
year as we make the Bear Band the best it can be!
Allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve been in band since the fifth grade, and I simply love it! I
attended secondary school right here in Katy ISD, and I went to Harding University in Searcy, AR to study
music. Teaching band is my absolute favorite thing to do, and I can’t wait to get started learning music with
your kids!
In our band hall, we expect kids to take their instruments home every day so they can practice. Every morning
when students come to school, they’ll come to the band hall before first period to leave their instruments on
our storage shelves. During their class period, students are expected to retrieve their instruments and be at
their seat before the tardy bell rings. At the end of the day, kids will come pick their instruments up. With all
these kids coming and going, we have several policies to make sure all students and instruments stay safe.
We’ll go over these expectations with the kids on the first day of school.
Our grades in band will be as follows:
• Other grades: occasional written worksheets, weekly Practice Records
o Students will be expected to practice at home at least 5 days a week, and they’ll get extra credit
for practicing 7 days!
• Minor grades: occasional playing tests or written quizzes, weekly participation grades
o Participation grades will come from students actively engaging in class and from their being
prepared with all supplies every day. Habitually forgetting instruments, binders, or pencils will
result in lowered participation grades.
• Major grades: playing tests and participation in required concerts
o All major grades will be posted on Canvas before they occur. Playing tests will have a rubric
posted, too, so kids can practice intentionally before the test.
Late assignments will be accepted based on KISD policy. Re-tests may be offered if students have not
mastered the concepts being tested, as our goal in band is understanding and mastery. Re-testing gives the
kids a chance to practice and master anything they may have missed the first time around!
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to reach me is to
email me via the Canvas inbox or at LelaLKemp@[Link].
I look forward to working with you this year as we all guide your students through a fun, educational year of
band.
Thanks for your support,
Lela Kemp
