The distribution chain of goods clearly demonstrates that the producer is the very starting point
of the whole process. It may be the primary producer (coal miner, gold miner, farmer, fisherman,
herdsman…) whose goods are made available by nature, or the secondary producer (engineers,
carpenters, builders, manufacturers...) who turns primary products into more sophisticated goods.
Modern producers invest substantial sums of money in machinery and plant to supply a large number of
consumers. By means of standardization and taylorization they produce large quantities of articles of
different sizes, shapes, qualities in anticipation of demand. This demand can be seasonal, as for
umbrellas, greeting cards, gifts, toys; but it can also coincide with certain joyful events such as the arrival
of the pope in certain African countries. The producer is generally far from the consumers who use his
items and from the shops where they are retailed. To bridge this gap he organizes some market
research that provides him with reliable information from the wholesalers, the retailers and the
consumers.
The wholesaler handles goods in the intermediate position between the producer and the
retailer. He buys these goods in very large quantities, transports and warehouses them carefully. He
then breaks down bulk to reasonable sizes, markets his newly-packed goods by creating a suitable
distribution network. He very often sells under his own brand name and thus relieves the manufacturer
of the need to advertise his products. As a middleman he conveys the views of the producer and the
retailer to each other; this helps either to make improvements in the quality of the products or to use
them more profitably. It is the wholesaler who advises the producer about which goods are selling best,
which ones appeal to the different markets. With his huge warehouses he provides storage space for
manufacturers who cannot stock all the goods they produce.
The retailer buys in bulk from the wholesaler and cuts up into smaller quantities to meet the everyday
needs of the consumers. He also acts as middleman the small shopkeeper’s prices are certainly high,
but he has the advantage of being closed to the consumers.

BASIC ECONOMICS
The productive activities in a country form the economy of that nation. Economy is a social
science because it is concerned with the scarce resources used by the members of a society who choose
some of them to satisfy their needs. The study of an economy involves the analysis of the creation, the
allocation, the exchange, the distribution and the consumption of goods or services. An economist is a
scientist who objectively describes and explains production, showing how it meets our numerous
everyday needs.
Picking fruit, fishing and hunting are subsistence activities whereas manufacturing, cattle breeding
and farming have become market oriented; such socially organized occupations create goods to be
exchanged for money. In industry, an entrepreneur, if he has got capital or can borrow from a bank, will
combine it with other factors such as technical knowledge, land and labour to make machines, objects
or foods. He can only do so if there is a profit motive or self-interest. Market research has shown that he
will benefit from this choice of what to produce, the quantities to make, their quality as well as the
selling prices.
Producers often anticipate demand which is our strong desire for goods or services. Our
insatiable appetites are concentrated on basic needs such as food, shelter and clothes. Demand for
these is almost inelastic because we go on buying them despite their high prices. The satisfying power of
non-essential wants such as music and cinema changes with circumstances. The amount of pleasure or
enjoyment derived from a cigarette or a book is influenced by time, place and taste.
Smoking cannot rank first in a non-smoker’s scale of preferences. Even the smokers adjust the
number of cigarettes they buy to market conditions. At a given time, if prices rise, they will reduce their
consumption. The cigarette manufacturers will cut the quantities for sale in the market. Supply, like
demand, is therefore elastic. The law of supply and demand reflects those facts: a rise in prices other
things being equal (O.T.B.E.), increases demand whereas a glut brings a fall in prices. The validity of this
law depends on constant costs of production, the inexistence of substitutes and a limited ability to
consume the goods being supplied.
If the buyer’s income remains low, he will tend to look for a cheaper substitute. This is
particularly true with very expensive goods. Demand for luxury cars will fall sharply when there is even a
small rise in their prices. Economists refer to this phenomenon as substitute elasticity of demand.
