EDGE NIGHT OUTLINE
GOAL
S C R I P T U R E & CCC : The goal of this Edge Night is to
increase the youth’s understanding of
• 2 Samuel 12:1-13 the Sacrament of Reconciliation and
the necessity of this sacrament in
• Psalm 32 our lives. The night will also address
some of the misconceptions the
• Psalm 51 youth have about Reconciliation.
• Isaiah 22:21-22 E D G E N I G H T AT A G L A N C E
This night is going to focus on the
• Matthew 9:2-8 Sacrament of Reconciliation and the
importance of this sacrament in our
• Matthew 16:19 lives. Jesus gave the apostles the
authority to forgive or bind sins and
• Matthew 18:15-18 the sins that are forgiven on earth
are forgiven in heaven. This authority
• Luke 15:11-32 is given to the priest to forgive our
sins. The Church calls us to receive
• John 8:1-11 the Sacrament of Reconciliation at
least twice a year, but as we grow
• John 20:21-23 and develop in our faith, we should
receive the sacrament with greater
• 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 frequency. Please note, we often hear
the words confession or reconciliation
• James 5:16-19 in regards to this sacrament.
Throughout this night, we will use the
• 1 John 1:8-2:2 word “reconciliation,” but please use
the word (confession/reconciliation)
• CCC 1422-1433 that your youth are most familiar with
in your community.
• CCC 1440-1470
This night will start with a fun
• CCC 1480-1498 competition to see who can “Do
the Dishes” the fastest to call to
mind that we are stained by sin
and need the Lord to forgive our
sins. This competition will be tied
into the Proclaim as an example
of what happens to our souls in
Reconciliation. The Sacrament
spiritually cleanses our souls similar
to the way we wash dishes to make
them clean. After the competition
there will be a skit titled “I Don’t Give
a Darn.” This will start out kind of
funny with three teens making fun
of Confession, but it will end on a

serious note. During small group,
the youth will be able to discuss
their thoughts and possible fears
about going to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. Finally, there will be
an examination of conscience to help
the youth understand their need for
God’s mercy.
BEFORE THE NIGHT
You will need to prepare the dirty
plates for the opening activity. You
want to make sure the plates are dirty
and the food dried on the plates.
You will also need to communicate
with your pastor about the night so
that he can be present if there are
any questions and/or provide the
opportunity for the youth to receive
the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
ENVIRONMENT
At the front of the space have a
make-shift confessional. You can do
this simply by placing two chairs in
the front and hang a curtain between
them (If you have access to a kneeler
for the penitent, that would work
as well.) Around the room have
signs that are associated with this
Sacrament on poster board. Here
are some examples: Confession,
Reconciliation, Penance, Contrition,
Conversion, Mercy, Forgiveness, etc.

DO THE DISHES!
CO M P E T I T I O N
You will need three volunteers for
this game. (It would be best to pick
them from the crowd that night.) This
will be a race to see who can clean
these dirty dishes the fastest and
the best. You will need nine plates
that you have dirtied to the extreme;
for example, cover these plates with
spam, ketchup, mashed bananas,
chocolate sauce, etc.
On the table, have the dirty dishes
in a plastic tub and another plastic
tub with soapy water. Have wipes
available for the middle school
volunteers to use to “do the dishes.”
They will all have one minute;
whoever can clean the dishes the
fastest with the least amount of food
on them will be your winner. Have
towels available for the dishes to be
dried as well. Be sure to put plastic
around the environment so that

Skit about Reconciliation
That was a powerful skit. Let’s look
at what happened. Those three teens
were scared to go into Reconciliation,
so they made up their sins. While this
is part of the skit, please know that
it is never appropriate to lie or make
things up in the confessional. The
priest knew that the young man was
lying and so encouraged him to really
look at Jesus upon the cross and
realize that Jesus’ suffering was the
greatest act of love and mercy. As the
boy is saying the line, he cannot finish
because he is overwhelmed with
sorrow for having offended Jesus
and telling lies in the confessional.

and made fun of the sacrament. The
priest gave him that penance and the
young man’s heart was changed – so
much so that he eventually became
a priest.
Introduction to the Sacrament
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
is referred to with many names –
Penance, Confession, the Sacrament
of Conversion or Forgiveness – but
what do all these things mean? What
is the Sacrament of Reconciliation all
about and why do we need it? Here
is what we learn from the Catechism
of the Catholic Church about the
sacrament (Have these available as a
visual slide or available for the youth
to read along in another form):
“Those who approach the sacrament
of Penance obtain pardon from God’s
mercy for the offense committed
against him, and are, at the same
time, reconciled with the Church
which they have wounded by
their sins and which by charity, by
example, and by prayer labors for
their conversion” (1422).
“’The whole power of the sacrament
of Penance consists in restoring
us to God’s grace and joining us
with him in an intimate friendship.’
Reconciliation with God is thus the
purpose and effect of this sacrament.
For those who receive the sacrament
of Penance with contrite heart and
religious disposition, reconciliation
“is usually followed by peace and
serenity of conscience with strong
spiritual consolation.” Indeed the
sacrament of Reconciliation with
God brings about a true “spiritual
resurrection,” restoration of the
dignity and blessings of the life of the
children of God, of which the most
precious is friendship with God.”
(1468)
Why do we need it?
When you and I are baptized, we are
cleansed form original sin and all of
our sin is washed away. However,
because of our fallen nature (from
Adam and Eve), we sin – which
means we do things that offend God
and our relationship with Him. We
are raised to know the difference
between right and wrong, but
sometimes we choose the wrong. We
know we should not cheat on a test,
lie to our parents, steal something
from a store, but there are times
when maybe you have chosen to do
one of these or another sin. When we
do this, we choose sin over God. We
decide for ourselves what we think
is best instead of relying on God. For
the test, we think it will be better to
cheat so we do not get in trouble,
rather than asking God to help us
study so we can be prepared. With
our parents, we may argue because
we want to do our own thing, but
God wants us to honor our parents,
but we choose to disobey.
This is why we need to be reconciled
to God. We have hurt our relationship
with God and we need a way to
repair it. The Catechism says, “we
obtain pardon from God’s mercy
for the offense committed again
him.” God offers us forgiveness
when we sin against him. When we
confess our sins, we can have an
intimate relationship with Jesus and
experience true peace.
Think back to our silly competition to
clean the dishes. Confession is kind
of like doing the dishes. Our souls
are the plates; when we sin, whether
it’s big or small, it dirties our souls

and we need to be cleaned. The
Sacrament of Confession completely
cleans our souls and we are made
brand new! St. Paul tell us in 2
Corinthians 5 that Jesus has given us
the ministry of reconciliation so that
we can be made new.
First of all, the Sacrament of
Reconciliation is one of the two
Sacraments of Healing. God offers
healing to us every time we go to
confession. But why do we need
healing? Because every time we sin,
we hurt our relationship with God
and our neighbor. We may think we
are the only one hurt by our sin, but
every sin hurts us, as well as our
neighbor. We are human and we sin
daily; all the small sins that seem
insignificant build up and really weigh
us down. For example, have you ever
had a splinter? They are so small but
they can really hurt, right? Imagine if
we got a splinter every day or maybe
two times a day – eventually that
is not going to feel very good, and
we may need to go to the doctor.
Even the small sins or venial sins
can lead us to more serious sins.
We should confess those sins during
Reconciliation so we can receive the
grace we need in those situations.
And let’s say we break a bone or
get seriously injured? We would not
hesitate to go to the doctor or even
the emergency room, right? If we had
a broken leg, we would rush to the
hospital to get it fixed! Well, why is
it if we commit a big sin or a mortal
sin we do not run to Reconciliation?
If we do not go to Reconciliation it
would be like walking around with
a broken leg or a severed arm! We
need healing for our sins! We need
to run to the best doctor and beg for
him to make us better; that doctor

is Christ and He wants to heal us!
In Reconciliations, the priest speaks ___________________________
and acts in the person of Christ, and
he challenges us to sin no more. ___________________________
What is this Sacrament? ___________________________
How many of us have ever hurt
someone’s feelings or told a lie and ___________________________
felt guilty afterwards? Have you ever
had to go to a person or to your ___________________________
parents or a friend and say, “I’m
sorry”? It’s never a fun thing to do ___________________________
but once we do it we feel a huge
relief. Then how great is it when ___________________________
the person says in return, “I forgive
you”? It’s like a huge weight has ___________________________
been lifted from you and there is a
sense of peace. That is what the ___________________________
Sacrament of Confession is! It is
mercy, it is forgiveness, it is peace, it ___________________________
is grace, it gives us strength, and it
removes all guilt! Not only does God ___________________________
repair our relationship with Himself,
but He also repairs our relationship ___________________________
with the Church. We are a member
of the Body of Christ, and when we ___________________________
sin we hurt the whole Body. At the
end of Confession the priest offers us ___________________________
absolution and he says,

“God, the Father of mercies, through
the death and resurrection of His Son ___________________________
has reconciled the world to Himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us ___________________________
for the forgiveness of sins; through
the ministry of the Church may God ___________________________
give you pardon and peace, and I
absolve you from your sins in the ___________________________
name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.” ___________________________
Because of Jesus’ death and ___________________________
Resurrection we can be forgiven
through this great sacrament. God ___________________________
gives us pardon and peace, and we
are absolved from all of our sins. ___________________________
They are completely removed from
the mind of God! We get a new start,

a clean plate. The other amazing
thing about Reconciliation is what is
called “the seal of the confessional.”
This means that the priest cannot
share what he hears in the
confessional with anyone. The priest
cannot call your parents; he cannot
call your teachers; he cannot tell a
single soul what you confess during
Reconciliation. It stays between you
and God.
Now what?
When Jesus encounters a woman
caught in sin and about to be stoned,
He shows her compassion and
then says to her: “Now go and sin
no more.” (John 8:11). Confession
not only offers us forgiveness but it
gives us the grace we need to sin
no more! Part of this sacrament is to
make a commitment not to sin again.
In the Act of Contrition we make a
commitment to do our penance, to
sin no more, and to avoid whatever
leads us to sin. Part of this sacrament
is conversion. Jesus calls us to
continual conversion of heart. God
gives us the strength to begin anew.
It is in discovering the greatness of
God’s love and mercy that we should
want to rid ourselves of sin because
we do not want to offend the one
we love so much! Our hearts should
be converted every time we look at
the Lord and realize He died for us!
Let’s not be like the person in the
skit who looked at the crucifix and
said, “Jesus you died on the cross for
love of me and I don’t give a darn.”
Instead let’s look at his sacrifice on
the cross and thank Him because out
of His love for us we can be forgiven
of our sins over and over and over
again.

Before the middle school youth are
sent home they will be challenged to
remember:
1. Much like the dishes at the
beginning of the night, we see that
when we sin, it causes there to be
stains in our lives. We need Jesus’
healing to be restored.
2. Jesus is waiting for us in the
Sacrament of Reconciliation to
show us His love and mercy.
3. Through the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, we ask for
forgiveness, promise to do our
penance, and commit to making
changes in our lives to avoid sin.
4. Commit to going to the Sacrament
of Reconciliation within in the next
month. Invite your family to join you
in celebrating the Sacrament.

with Jesus, we should frequent the
sacrament more often and make it a
part of our spiritual routine. Discuss

going to Reconciliation and help him/

times and go as a family.

judge/Core Member has said

short presentation for the
youth on the priest’s role and
perspective in Reconciliation.
For a smaller group, you
could offer the Sacrament of
Reconciliation as part of the
Closing Prayer.

This Edge Night was about the
Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Thus far this semester, we have
discussed the Sacraments of
Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and
Confirmation). Tonight we discussed
one of the two Sacraments of
Healing: Reconciliation. Jesus gave
authority to the apostles to forgive
sins and that authority is passed
down to bishops and priests today.
When we sin, we offend God, as well
as the Church and our community.
We approach the Sacrament of
Reconciliation to ask forgiveness.
We find healing in hearing the words,
“Your sins have been forgiven, go
forth and sin no more.” Through the

I mean seriously, this is so lame! I have an idea, why don’t we make up sins and
completely freak out the priest!

Okay, now for your penance – I want you to kneel in front of the crucifix and repeat this
statement three times out loud: “Jesus you died on the cross for love of me, and I don’t
give a darn.” Okay?

Teen #1
I just have to say that three times? “Jesus you died on a cross for love of me, and I
don’t give a darn”? I can do that. (Looks relieved like he got away with something.)

PRIEST
That’s it, say three times, “Jesus you died on the cross for love of me, and I don’t give a
darn.”
(Teen leaves the confessional and kneels down in front of a crucifix and looks back at his
friends)

TEEN #1
(Chuckling) Jesus you died on the cross for me, you love me, and I don’t give
a darn! (Pausing and looking down. He says the next statement slower with more
emotion.) Jesus (pause) you died on the cross for me… You love me, you love me? And
I don’t give a darn?…
(Long emotional pause)
Jesus, you died on the cross for me, and you love me.
