WETHERSFIELD EAGLES

FOOTBALL
Overwhelming the Edge
Spread Jet Sweep Running Game

Jeff Russell - Offensive Coordinator JRussell@wethersfield.me

ASSESSMENT
• Diagnose the defense early in the game

• Does it hold true to the scout

• How much of the wide side or boundary are they willing to give
up

• How many players are they aligning over 3 or 4 receivers to a side

• How can we get the ball to speed with numbers in front

(formation variations, unbalanced, trips, quads)
OUR SETUP
• Aligning quickly

• Receivers labeled from left to right and NEVER overlap

• Running back can quickly align in empty as the inside

most receiver

• Creating ONE signal that turns a formation into

unbalanced

JET SWEEP
• Keeping players comfortable and “happy” and in a position to be successful

• Our Jet Sweep is a “pass” when a wide receiver motions from outside the tackle
box, and a “hand off ” to any player that starts inside the tackle box (or in the
backfield)

• Limits practice time

• Limits turnovers

• Our QB will try to have the ball snapped when the motion player is EVEN with the
offensive tackle.

• We will snap it earlier, or later, depending on an individual players speed

JET SWEEP BLOCKING
- ODD FRONT -
• Our offensive line will look to pull two players vs an ODD front to meet up
with the Inside LBs outside of the formation.

• This can either be FSGuard w/ BSGuard, or Center w/ BSGuard

• Center and FSGuard will make the decision on who will pull — if the Center
pulls, the FSGuard will block down on the nose

• Down Blocking the nose will often times give the playside Inside LB a
false read, and slow down his flow/scrape to the edge

• Down Blocking the nose will ALSO prevent a dominate nose from
driving a weaker Center into the pulling lane of the BSGuard

• Tackles will REACH the Man ON (Frontside and backside)

JET SWEEP BLOCKING
- ODD FRONT -
JET SWEEP BLOCKING
- EVEN FRONT -
• Our offensive line will look to pull ONE or TWO players vs an EVEN front to meet up with the
Inside LBs outside of the formation.

• The BSGuard will always pull — depending on the alignment of the DTs, the Center may
be able to pull

• If there is a 3 Technique to the playside, only the BSGuard will pull, while the FSGuard
reaches the 3 Technique

• If there is a 1 Technique to the playside, the Center and BSGuard can pull

• If the front is inconsistent and there are 2Techniques, only the BSGuard will pull

• Remember this is the spread offense, if there are 4 DLmen, then you probably aren’t seeing 4
LBs

• If you are seeing 4 DL, and 4 LBs, then you’re only seeing 3 deep… you have to be able to
make them pay in 3 deep coverage

JET SWEEP BLOCKING
- PERIMETER -
• Our skill position players will block the “most dangerous” defensive players

• Our inside receiver will block the first overhang player (Outside LB, walked up Safety, etc).

• If there are 3 receivers to a side, or even 4 receivers to a side — the inside receivers will
look to DOUBLE or TRIPLE team the Most Dangerous before leaving. “Block the man
with the body, and block the next player with your eyes” — don’t leave until he’s a threat

• Our outside receiver will “PUSH—Crack.” This means he will fire off the ball towards the man
lined up on him. If he backpedals or turns to run to deep, he will turn his eyes inside, come flat
down the LOS, and seal any alley defender (We don’t look for the “big hit” anymore, instead
we look for optimal body positioning on the block)

• If we have a RB leading the play out of the backfield, they will be blocking the first player who
shows on the edge. THEY MUST CREATE A SEAL

• This might mean helping the Tackle with his reach block, or beating a Force OLB to the point of
attack, before he gets to the LOS

POWER READ
QB READ VARIATIONS
• Our Power Read concept can be run with a number of different players and in a number of different directions

• Traditional “C Gap” Power Read with Power Blocking

• Jet Sweep and Power in the same direction

• Jet Counter Read

• Jet Sweep in one direction, with QB counter going in the other direction

• Jet Wrap/Dart Read

• Jet Sweep in one direction, with QB Wrap/Dart going in the other direction

• Jet Trey Read

• Jet Sweep in one direction, with QB Trey going in the other direction

• All of these concepts involve reading the frontside Contain player (DE)

• How it’s called

JET POWER READ
• We will start to run power read when ILBs are starting to get over the top of our pullers and are making plays on the
Sweep

• Our Offensive line will block POWER

• QB makes an “OVER” Call to the play side tackle

• Our FSTackle will Arc Release to help get more blockers on the perimeter and to make the read easier for the QB

• The DE will usually fight hard not to get reached, this will usually open a tremendous hole for the QB if he keeps it

• If the FSTackle has a DLineman in “B” Gap or a challenging player head up the FSGuard, he will be forced to block
down instead. In this case, he should widen his split to also help widen the DE

• Center’s Power Rules are to “Pull Protect” the A Gap the BSGuard is pulling from — If he has a NT, he will work with
the FSGuard to keep playside leverage and Overtake him

• FSGuard’s Power Rules are to Block back towards the puller —GAP—Down—Backer

• BSGuard will PULL and insert into B gap, looking for the FS InsideLB

• BSTackle will “Pull Protect” the B Gap the BSGuard is pulling from — He has to make sure no players can chase the
puller, then he’ll hinge off backside or work up to the second level

JET COUNTER READ
• OLine will be blocking Counter in one direction, while the Receivers and/or RBs are running
Jet Sweep

• Our Call Side Tackle will Pull and Kick out the EMOL on the opposite side of the formation

• Our Frontside (Opposite the Puller) of the offensive Line will all block Counter/GAP
Rules

• Our Skill players will be blocking Jet Sweep

• Our QB will make the same read on the DE/Contain player

• If the DE is in position to tackle the ball carrier, the QB will put his foot in the ground
and follow the Counter blocking in the opposite direction

• If the DE is sitting on the LOS or chasing the puller, the QB will give the ball to the Jet
man

the Inside LB

• Our Frontside (Opposite the Puller) of the offensive Line will all block Base Rules, looking to Open B
Gap

• If there is a 3 Technique, the Tackle and Guard Opposite the puller will “cross block”

• There is a 1 Technique, the Tackle can either Influence a pass rush, or Dig the DE out of the hole

• Our Skill players will be blocking Jet Sweep

• Our QB will make the same read on the DE/Contain player

• If the DE is in position to tackle the ball carrier, the QB will put his foot in the ground and follow the
