TASK II.
I. Select ONE chapter of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
II. Guided Questions
1. What is the salient point/s of the chapter?
2. Integrate the message of the specific chapter to the recent event/happenings in our
generation now.

Noli Me Tangere
Chapter I: A Social Gathering
1.The salient point of the chapter is I think that “According to Project Gutenberg License
translated by Pascual H. Poblete (2006)”, we can see already how Padre Damaso dominates the
conversation in gathering, Furthermore, Father Damaso is openly prejudiced against indigenous
Filipinos, indicating a disconnect between him and perhaps the church as a whole. Rizal also
portrays Father Dámaso as ignorant, not caring to learn Tagalog despite spending two decades
living in small communities in the Philippines because he thinks Filipino is just an Indio. But
Tinyente provides a powerful counterpoint to Father Damaso’s views, pointing out that the
backwardness of the Philippines could also be blamed on the Spanish and may he right because
the way how they treat Filipino is like kind of person that doesn’t have known in this world, they
treat them a lower kind of human being.

2.In our generation Padre Damaso character still exist especially to those people in higher
positon status in life, they think they can control everything because they have a power. Example
there are some person that I know using their power and money to drag other people, they think
they are intelligent enough to treat the other people like no one, they think they know everything
but the truth is they more ignorant than to those persons who they dragging down.

El Filibusterismo
Chapter 1: On the Upper Deck
1. According to Project Gutenberg License translated by Charles Derbyshire (2005) I
think the salient of this chapter is about the division of status in life. The steamship Tabo is
sailing on the Pasig River to Laguna. Passengers on the upper deck talk about the lake and the
long journey. If we see the steamship is there is two divisions and that is “Upper Deck” that for
elite and “Lower Deck” for the ordinary people. We can see into this chapter their barrier
between elite and indios, they can’t be in one place because of the status in life, most of people
in upper deck is Spaniards, they all known have a power and wealth but they have an own
personality.
2.Upper deck for my interpretation is representing the high quality of status in life. We
can see the upper deck still nowadays not literally in the steamship that we didn’t notice,
Example in this scenario the justice system here in our country, based on my observation if you
are well known person and have a power you can easily get it but if are a poor it takes a time to
get that, on the other side if you are powerful you manipulate the justice specially your opponent
is more lower than you.
