MODULE OVERVIEW
Nursing is a profession that requires intensive training on both theoretical and clinical
perspective. This module deals with the concepts, principles, theories, and techniques in the nursing
care of at risk/high risk/ sick clients during childbearing and childbearing years toward health promotion,
disease prevention, restoration and maintenance, and rehabilitation. The learners are expected to
provide safe, appropriate, and holistic nursing care to clients utilizing the nursing process.
Having gone through the theoretical inputs in the NCM 109 lecture, the next step that
you need to learn is on the application of these principles and techniques in the nursing care of
these clients.
For this 64- hour related learning experience, you will be catered to flexible clinical
learning experiences through this self-instructional module.
Remember, this might not be a substitute for the actual clinical experience, but this can
help you navigate through your patient care experiences in this alternative learning platform.

1. Conduct pediatric assessment


2. Describe the normal characteristics of a pediatric client.
3. Assess pediatric client for normal growth and development.
4. Plan nursing care of a pediatric client such as instructing parents on how to take care of their
child
5. Identify areas related to pediatric assessment and care that could benefit from additional
nursing research or application of evidence -based practice.
6. Integrate knowledge and skills of a pediatric care and development and immediate care needs
with the nursing process to achieve quality maternal and child health nursing care.

FIRST STEP TO ACHIEVE YOUR OBJECTIVE


You had your discussion on the concepts and principles of Maternal and Child Nursing in
NCM 109 lecture. You have also started knowing about the diagnostics, medical and nursing
management of these patients with varying concerns in Maternal and Child Nursing. Let us have
a review of these concepts and see how much you can recall.

A nurse’s responsibility includes the identification of concerns of patients upon


admission to any medical facility or during bedside rounds. Choose from among the following
patients who have problems involving maternal and child nursing by placing a (/) check mark and

_____ Melanie a 2-year-old had fever for 1 day then she shows active movement like playing,
dancing.

You are now on duty in the PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU) of Ilocos
Training and Regional Medical Center. In this 64-hour duty, you are expected to
handle and manage the care of patients in the PEDIATRIC Intensive Care Unit. You
are assigned to take care of at least 1 patient. You will be performing the
following nursing responsibilities:
 Assist in Receiving in the admission
 Vital Signs Monitoring
 Physical Assessment
 Administering medication
 Intake and output Monitoring (I&O)
 Educate mother on the importance of caring a child with
 Planning of Nursing Care Plans
 Patient Care Documentation
In your provision of the nursing care, you are reminded of the following behaviors:

related to assessing the patient.

social, cultural, and spiritual influences

Children with acute asthma exacerbations frequently present to an emergency department


with signs of respiratory distress. The most severe episodes are potentially
life-threatening. Effective treatment depends on the accurate and rapid
assessment of disease severity at presentation. This statement addresses the
assessment, management, and disposition of pediatrics patients with a
known diagnosis of asthma who present with an acute asthma exacerbation,
especially preschoolers at high risk for persistent asthma. Guidance includes
the assessment of asthma severity, treatment considerations, proper
discharge planning, follow-up, and prescription for inhaled corticosteroids to
prevent exacerbation and decrease chronic morbidity.

CASE SCENARIO:

Admitted a three-year-old male child named C. Advincula with a complaint of coughing for 2 weeks. Coughing is
present every night. He has also hadARRIVAL

his temperature has not been measured at home. His parents
have been using a decongestant/antihistamine syrup and albuterol syrup which were left over from a sibling.
Initially the cough improved but it worsened over the next 2 days. He is noted to have morning sneezing and nasal
congestion. He has had similar episodes in the past, but this episode is worse. He has no known allergies to foods or
medications. He is admitted to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit bed 2 per stretcher. His attending physician is Dr. Betty
de la Cuesta.
TASKS: To immerse yourself in the care management of your patient, let’s take note of the detailed
description of your patient care tasks. Using the Case Scenario assigned to you, you are expected to

 Do an admission procedure, fill up the KARDEX

• Conduct a patient history taking and physical assessment of your patient following the
format by the Lorma College of Nursing Patient History and Physical Assessment Form.

• Formulate a Nursing Care Plan for you patient based on 3 prioritized problems using the
Lorma College of Nursing NCP Form. Integrate your nursing care interventions significant to
bioethical and legal standards in patient care.

• Prior to administering the patient’s medications, you are required to make a drug study of
all medications required by your patient in oral or parenteral form and document it. Use the
Lorma Colleges Drug Study Format for your documentation.

• Submit an article report/case journal using APA format with references. Use Lorma
College of Nursing Journal format.
