PROJECT Platform - A View For All
JTFD members have
been hard at work this
year designing, digging,
and developing a viewing
platform that overlooks
the field adjacent to the
Friendly Forest. In the
distance a train rolls
down the tracks into
Helmsburg and the view
is spectacular. This pro-
ject is several in a series
of campaigns that will
create a community space
for all to enjoy. This year
so far, we’ve cleaned out
the back acres and planted
over 320 trees. The 5 foot
high platform and corre-
sponding ramp has been
constructed in accordance
to specific accessibility re-
quirements, The final items
to complete the Project
Platform is to 1) create a
150 foot accessible walkway
and parking pad and 2) to
install necessary hand rail-
ings on the ramp. These Fire Runs 125

2021 Community Activities lead to Rescue

A View for All — A Part of One Team, One Dream Project

PHASE I: Project Save Our Friendly For-
est began when our back area became
flooded due to the clearing of the field be-
hind the station. We raised money to build
up the property and fence the entire back
two acres in for the safety of our visitors
when visiting the forest during our festivi-
ties.
PHASE II: Project ReForest: After down-
ing all dead and sick trees, the department
planted 320 native trees. Sounds like a
great number, but many will not survive, but
the healthiest will thrive.
PHASE III: Project Plat-
form—A View for All.
The project then ex-
panded as the clear
cutting of the field literal-
ly opened up another
opportunity as it became
evident that the view was something that
could be enjoyed by everyone. The plat-
form and ramp have been completed. And
this is where we are today. Creating
an accessible trail is imperative to
give all those the opportunity to visit
the Friendly Forest. The following is
a list of items needed to complete
this phase of the project:
1. Trench dug to install lighting directly onto
the platform for safety and evening view-
ing
2. Excavating 150 ft x 4 ft walkway and
building walkway frame and 8ft x 10 ft
pad for access vehicle
3. 9 yards of concrete for walk & pad
4. Required accessible hand railings on
ramp
TOTAL Budget $10,000. You can be a part
of this!! Send in what you can. Lend a hand
digging. Help installing the handrails. Target
for completion of Phase III is mid July! To-
gether we can do this!!
And, yes there are more plans underway.
PHASE IV:: Project: Adventure Trail:
The lower part of the trail still experienc-
es flooding after ever heavy rain. The
ground needs to be elevated six inches
and a higher perimeter wall needs to be
created around the property. Plaques
will be erected to identify all the variety of
trees along the path and electric access
will be installed along the trail. Added to
the trail will be curious sights that you will
have to see to believe.
