I. Introductory Concept

Hi kid! This Learning Activity Sheet will provide you meaningful

and interesting activities in solving non-routine problems involving the
area of a circle. Start answering it with confidence. Have fun and good
luck!

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Solves non-routine problems involving

the area of a given circle.
CODE: M5ME-Ivb-75

III. Activities

What is a non-routine problem?

Non-Routine Problem is any complex problem that requires some
degree of creativity or originality to solve. Non-routine problems typically
do not have an immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Often
times, these problems can be solved in multiple ways.

To solve non-routine problems involving area of a circle, you have to

follow several steps.

Step 1. Understand – What is asked?

– What is the given?

Step 2. Plan – How are you going to solve the problem?

Step 3. Solve – What is the solution?

– What is the answer to the problem?

1
The area of a circle can be calculated using three formulas. These
formulas are applied depending on the information you are given.

π
A = πr2 A= A=
π
A is the area of a circle, r is the radius, d is the diameter, and C is the
circumference. Use 3.14 as the value of pi (π)

Example 1

A giant mixer for making kakanin has a mixing bowl with 110 cm
diameter. Marina plans to cover it with circular plywood so that their
products will be safe from dirt. How big should the circular plywood
cover be? Can a 100 cm x 100 cm square plywood be cut into a
circle to cover the bowl?

Step 1. Understand
What are being asked in the problem?
a. The total area of the plywood needed to cover the mixing
bowl.
b. The problem also asks if a 100 cm x 100 cm square plywood
can be cut into circle to cover the bowl.
What are the given?
a. 110 cm. diameter of the mixing bowl.
b. 100 cm x 100 cm square plywood.

Step 2. Plan
How are you going to solve the problem?
a. Draw the figure.
1. Mixing bowl

2. For the circle to be cut from square plywood.

The maximum diameter of a circle

that can be cut from a 100 cm by
100 cm square plywood is 100
diameters.

b. Use the formula to get the area of a circle (mixing bowl and circle
to be cut from square plywood)
2
c. Subtract the resulting products.

Step 3. Solve
What is the solution?

a. Area of a circle (mixing bowl)

π
A= = = 9 498.50 cm2

b. Area of a circle (to be cut from square plywood)

π
A= = = 7, 850.00 cm2

c. 9 489.50 cm 2 – 7,850.00 cm 2 = 1639.50 cm 2

What is the answer to the problem?

a. The plywood cover must have an area of 9 498. 50 cm 2.

b. The area of the mixing bowl is 1639.50 more than the area of the
plywood. Thus, the square plywood is not enough to cut a circle
that can be covered the mixing bowl.

PRACTICE TASK 1 Look at me, then solve!

Direction: Solve the given problem by answering the questions below.

1. A spinner has 6 sectors, half of which are red and half of which are
black. If the radius of the spinner is 3 in, what is the area of the red
sectors?
a. What is asked in the problem?
b. What is the given?
c. Solve using the formula

2. A farmer grows potatoes on a circular plot of land that has a radius

of 20 meters. Each potato plant requires 2 square meters of soil. What is
the maximum number of potato plants the farmer can grow?
a. What is asked in the problem?
b. What is the given?
c. Solve using the formula

3
PRACTICE TASK 2
Find ways to solve me!

Direction: Solve each problem by showing the step-by-step procedure.

1. Joshua draws a circle inside a square piece of paper whose area is

324 square inches. He makes sure that the circle touches each side
of the square. What is the area of the circle?

2. Newlywed couple Anna and Kristoff decided to have a semicircular

window in their house with a radius of 12 inches. They wanted the
window to be laminated with a sunblock coating that costs ₱ 50.00
per square inch to apply. What is the total cost of coating the
window?

IV. Rubrics

For Practice Task 1, each correct answer will be given 1 point.

For Practice Task 2, this Rubric will be applied.
