The Blind Who Could See… and Who Made Others See

Roselle Rodriguez Ambubuyog was born on

January 12, 1980 to Gemme Fonte Ambubuyog
and Deanna Ballesteros Rodriguez. She was the
youngest of four children and the only girl in the
family. She lost her sight when she was six years
old as a result of a severe reaction to over-the-
counter medications.

Despite her blindness, Roselle convinced her

parents to enroll her in regular schools with
sighted students. In those schools, Roselle
consistently excelled. She graduated
valedictorian from Holy Infant Montessori in
1986, Batino Elementary School in 1993, and
Ramon Magsaysay High School-Manila in 1997.

Roselle chose to pursue her college studies at the Ateneo de Manila University in
no small part because the university made an effort to understand her needs. The
university invested in a Braille translation software program that converted
encoded or scanned text and a Braille printer for Roselle’s exam questionnaires. In
2001, she graduated university valedictorian, with a BS in Mathematics, summa
cum laude.

None of these successes came easily. She was constantly regarded with suspicion
and discrimination because of her blindness and her academic standing. People
accused her of cheating during contests or remarked that she was awarded her
valedictories out of pity. When confronted with adversity, Roselle drew strength
from 2 Corinthians 12:9, ―The Lord said: My grace is sufficient for you, for My
power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly
about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.‖

In her valedictory speech at the Ateneo, Roselle also gives credit to her family. Her
father left his job to take care of her when she lost her sight. Her mother and
brothers took turns reading to her. She shared her victories with them—they were
as much her family’s as she was theirs. She told her audience, ―Everyone
experiences disabilities one way or another; mine is just more obvious than yours.
We are all fortunate to have loved ones, who help us bear the burdens brought
about by our weaknesses. We may find ourselves in the dark, but we should not
be afraid to move forward, because we have the light of our stars to count on, and
to be thankful for.‖

6
After she graduated, Roselle continued to be showered with awards. She was
named one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines. She received a
BPI Science Award. The National Centennial Commission gave her the
―Kabataang Makasaysayan‖ Award, and many others.

As of the time of this writing, Roselle continues to be based in the Philippines

while working as an access technology specialist working for software and
hardware companies in Europe and North America. She specializes in designing
technology products for the blind and has won awards for innovation and
engineering.

On her passion for her work, Roselle says, ―…playing a key role in the
development of innovative technologies that help people with disabilities, not only
in the Philippines but worldwide is a … fulfilling career. Looking back at the kid
who hated math before she learned to use the … abacus, I am happy knowing
that I am now in a position to provide the tools that would make life easier for blind
students...‖

Processing Questions:
1. What are the characteristics of Rosselle Ambubuyog which made her
surpass all the challenges and problems in her life?
2. How did she overcome all the adversities and challenges during her
college years in Ateneo?
3. What are the qualities of Rosselle that you admire the most? Briefly explain
your answer.

Ernie Gawilan: No Legs, All Heart

His first battle was inside his mother’s womb. He fought. He triumphed.
This is a man who survived abortion.

His childhood misfortunes made the man that he is now—a para swimming star,
who sets sights on winning the country’s first gold medal in the Paralympics, the
Olympics for athletes with disabilities.

Ernie Gawilan dives and swims into the pool for four hours every day to keep
himself in good shape. He trains at the Philippine Sports Complex in Pasig City,
where dormitories for national athletes like him are also located.

7
Despite his small stature—about four stacked 1.5 liters of Coke—Ernie brought
pride to the country for being one of several Filipinos to win gold in the Asian Para
Games, where para athletes across the continent face off.

The pool wonder aims to capture our country’s first gold at that.

Get to know this man, for he is a force to be reckoned with in his swift movements
in the pool, and in his sturdy attitude to trump life’s challenges.

Surviving abortion
When Ernie’s father discovered his mother’s affair, he left them. This prompted his
mother to try to abort him.
Ernie survived the abortion, the first of the many battles he will win. He was born in
Sinuda, Kitaotao in Bukidnon on May 5, 1991.
His mother died of cholera when he was just five months old, leaving him to the
custody of his grandfather Pedro.
At the age of seven, Ernie learned about the failed abortion.
―Badtrip talaga ako nu’n,‖ he said, as he narrated his struggles due to his
underdeveloped legs and left arm. ―Gumagapang ako dati para makalakad.‖
He also experienced being mocked and ridiculed for his physical impairment.
Ernie recalled that in one instance while he was a child, a construction worker
behind him commented: ―Wag mo akong luhuran.‖
He was hurt, so he turned to the man and replied, ―Bakit hindi ka lumuhod tapos
suntukan tayo?‖

Newfound hope
Soon after, a rich businessman convinced his grandfather to send him to a training
center dedicated to the handicapped youth. He found himself en route to Our Lady
of Victory Training Center at Babak, Samal Island in Davao del Norte. It is run by
the Maryknoll sisters of St. Dominic.
At the foundation’s beach resort, he met swimming coach Jude Corpuz who taught
him the skill that would change the tides of his life.
―Lagi niya akong nakikitang nakatingin sa dagat kahit high tide o low tide. Kaysa
masayang daw ang oras ko, tinuruan niya akong lumangoy,‖ Ernie said.
The Forest Hills resort pool became the initial training camp of young Ernie.
Coach Jude made him part of the swimming team composed of other persons with
disabilities.

Changing tides
His first swimming competition was the 2008 Philippine Olympic Festival held in
Cagayan de Oro. Young Ernie was closer to success. Well, not quite.

He was almost disqualified because he forgot his swimming trunks. Much to his
relief, competition officials allowed him to compete wearing bulky cargo pants.
Ernie finished second to a PWD national team member.
The first placer, Arnel Aba, took notice of his potential and asked him to join the
Philippine squad.

The odds were in favor of Ernie. Para swimming coach Tony Ong was then in
Davao and the Philippine Sports Commission was looking for para swimmers.
As they say, the rest is history.

8
Para swimming star
Far from his usual quiet and gentle manner, Ernie is ―a totally different person‖ in
swimming, according to Coach Tony. In the words of his trainer: a ―monster in the
pool.‖

Because of his dexterity and hard work in training, he serves as an inspiration for
his fellow para swimmers to do better in their drills. The six-man para swimming
team is composed of Ernie, Arnel, Gary Bejino, Roland Subido, Edwin Villanueva,
and Adrian Azul.

―Mabilis talaga lumangoy si Ernie kaya nacha-challenge kami sa kanya,‖ Arnel

said.

Under the supervision of Coach Tony and Coach Ral Rosario, the Davaoeño
goes all out, hoping to take home the elusive gold medal in Paralympics for the
Philippines. If he wins, he will receive a cash incentive from the government by
virtue of Republic Act 10699.

After making waves at the Asian Para Games last year, he received over
P4million in cash incentives, which he used to buy a 200-square meter house in
Samal Island. The bemedalled para athlete also plans to buy a farm and a
piggery, while helping his brother’s family.

―Hindi naman ako atleta habambuhay,‖ Ernie said. ―Gusto ko rin

makapagpundar.‖
He plans to retire in 2024.

Heart of a champion
While he was in Kuala Lumpur for the 2017 ASEAN Para Games, Ernie received
the news that his father had died.
Coach Tony had asked him to go home, but he chose to stay in Malaysia, and
donned the national colors.

Despite the undesirable news, he defended his title in the 400-meter freestyle
event after registering 4:57.49 on board. He also took home two gold medals, one
silver, and two bronzes.

Processing Questions:
1. How did Ernie Gawilan overcome all the challenges brought about by his
physical disability?
2. What is Ernie’s greatest achievement despite his physical disability? How do
you feel about it?
3. What important lessons in life can you extract from the story?

Keep in Mind

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 Minutes

We all face challenges every now and then, but it is how we react to
those challenges that determine how we can quickly handle them.

10
Do not run away from the problems and challenges you are facing in life. Do
not ignore them or try to hide from them. Face them. Deal with them. The greatest
growth in life and the most important lessons you will learn will come when you face
and deal with a serious challenge or problem. Regardless of the result, value the
experience and personal growth.

Learning how to deal with challenges takes time, persistence, and a positive
attitude. No matter what your life situation is, whether you are rich or poor, young or
old, boy or girl, challenges will happen because they are part of everyday life. But
with positive outlook in life, you will be able to cope with these life challenges. In the
end, these challenges make you stronger and better person, honed to be a
CHAMPION.

Here are seven strategies to help carry us through the different

challenges and problems of life:

1. Turn Toward Reality

When faced with problems, we always turn away from it instead of facing it.
We are then called ―denial king or queen‖! Reality bites but we must learn how to
face reality. When we apply the reality principle, it gives us a sense of strength to
deal with problems more effectively. What we once thought was difficult is now easier
to handle. What we once thought frightening now feels familiar. The problem
becomes more manageable. And there’s something even deeper that we learn. We
realized that we are capable of solving the problem because we learned to face it no
matter how big or small the problem is.

2. Embrace Your Life as It Is Rather than as you Wish It to Be

In Buddhism teachings, it believes that the secret to life is to want what you
have and to not want what you don’t have. This simply means that happiness is a
deep contentment with the conviction that what we have is sufficient and that we do
not envy anyone. Once we embrace the kind of life that we have, we would have the
pleasant feeling of appreciation of what we have. When we learn to appreciate who
we are and what we have, we give ourselves a chance to do what we can do.

3. Take Your Time

The story of the tortoise and the hare teaches us a lesson- slow and steady
wins the race. When we are in a hurry, we actually impede our own success. Yes we
get ahead of ourselves but if you noticed, we make more mistakes. We may think of
a solution the easy way but we may not choose the best way. Remember that when
you make important decisions in life, devote enough time to reflect, weigh

11
the pros and cons of your decision. And as you reflect, take time to ask the
intervention of a Divine Being to guide you to the right path.

4. Practice Gratitude

Many times in our lives, we tend to focus on our worries rather than on our
blessings. As such, we fail to see the beauty of life, the many gifts that we receive
the moment we wake up in the morning until we rest our tired bodies on bed. If we
learn to change our perspective, it can make all the difference. Ability to recognize
the good things around us helps us to be optimistic in life. This attitude eventually
helps us to cope with whatever difficulties that come our way.

5. Stay Close to Your Feelings, Even the Painful Ones

When our feelings are scary, heavy, and confusing, we try to avoid them. But
we need our feelings so we can find satisfaction, meaning, and pleasure in
life. Feelings, whether it is positive or negative are our sources of motivation and
energy. They are juice and spice of life. Without our feelings, our lives wouldn’t have
thrill or color at all. Without feelings, there wouldn’t be any joy, excitement, creativity
or fun. No matter how the feeling sucks you or topples you down, keep close to that
feeling as it helps you come up with a significant decision.

6. Accept Success and Failure as Part of Life’s Journey

People say that experience is the best teacher. At times we fail, at times we
succeed. We must know that the dynamic process of life is – trying, succeeding,
failing, and trying again. No one succeeds every time and no one fails at all times
either. But the best part of life is when we learn from our experience and use this
new learning to cope with challenges in life. In the long run, success helps us to gain
confidence and be positive while failure helps us build a better person in us. These
are significant factors in making our journey fruitful and our life worth living.

7. Tend to Your Loving Relationships

Always remember that you are not alone in your battle. You should not be
ashamed to ask for help. Try to reach out to your family, most trusted friend, teacher
or guidance counselor. You will notice that if you disclose to someone things that
bother you or things that make you sick, it makes you feel better. Moreover, a wise
and sound advice from them can help you arrive at novel solutions and overcome
any challenge at hand because you know that you have a support group.

another. And in each station, we encounter challenges/problems that may help or
hinder us to reach our destination. This time, after making a self-reflection on the
impact of life’s challenges and problems, try to create or write a slogan, a poem, a
song, a poster, a letter to yourself, an illustration, a collage, or a blog/vlog on how to
deal with the impact of challenges or problems in life. Write your answer on a sheet
