 Find catchment area for
each of these ( using
Planimeter or by graphical
method)

ponds, roads, Nallas, monuments, habitat etc.)
 Observe geological features (type of soil, type of
foundation, water table, etc.)
 Observe benefitted zone, affected zone
 Identify locations of GTS Bench Marks
 Identify any hindrances for survey
 Plan for all the above
25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 4
Data Collection
 Hydro-meteorological data.

 Influencing rain gauges, data from each of them for max period
 Max. Min Temperatures, sun-shine hours, wind vel. etc.
Runoff data (if available)

 Agronomical data
 Existing cropping pattern (predominant crops presently grown)
 Scope & Liking of people for cash crops
 Geological data
 Soil sample from dam seat(for design), Submergence (for quarry),
from command (suitability of crops)

Field survey - 1
 Submergence survey (using Total Station)
 Survey for dam seat (Block contour survey
conventional method)
 Survey for waste weir & tail channel (Alignment
Traverse – using chain, compass and dumpy
level)
 Survey for canal alignment (Traverse)

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 6

Field survey - 2
 Fly levels (Double leveling)
 for establishing Bench marks at different locations
like dam seat, waste weir, canal head work, command
area for disnet, etc.
 This you may do only once for all projects in the
locality.
 Submergence survey (using Total Station)
 To find the submergence area for different capacity
of tank, to establish elevation-area-capacity curves.

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 7

Field survey - 3
 Survey for dam seat (Block contour survey)
 To find out the best alignment with minimum quantity of earth
work

 Survey for waste weir & tail channel

(Traverse)
 Waste weir (Overflow portion of tank) : location and the size
 Length and alignment of tail channel from waste weir to original
nalla to rout the flood.

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 8

Field survey - 4

 Survey for canal alignment (Traverse)

 Fixing of canal head work, outlet location & its
elevation
 Alignment of canal based on the ground features of
the command and required canal bed slope
 CD works (if any) – type, location, hydrological
features of each of them

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 9

Corroboration
 Verification of field data.
 Reduction of field survey data, Checks, etc.
 Verification of hydrological data:
 Correctness of rain gauges chosen, sufficiency of number
of stations.
 Consistency of the data
 Estimation of missing data if any
 Testing of soil samples collected
 From submergence: for suitability as construction material
 From command: for suitability of irrigation and cropping
pattern proposed.
25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 10
Design-1
 Hydrological design.
 Hydrology.
 Catchment area – From topo-sheet using planimeter or
graphically
 Yield (Quantity of water available at site) – Strange’s Tables,
Ryve’s formula, other empirical formulae
 Compute 75% dependable yield using the series of available
data for at least 30 years
 Storage Capacity of tank –
 Availability of water (Based on Hydrology)
 Demand for water (Based on water planning)
 Storage capacity at site (Based on Topography)
 Fixing of different zones of reservoir (Based on expected siltation)

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 11

Design-2
 Water Planning
 Command area – from topo-sheet
 Crop water requirement – based on the design cropping pattern,
 tank capacity : from annual crop water requirement,
 canal capacity: from peak demand in a fortnight.

 Structural design
 Stability analysis of tank bund, phreatic line, other provisions like
sand filter, revetment, rock toe, etc.
 Design of canal – size, L-slope (design discharge & command)
 Design of waste weir (Flood routing – Ryve’s formula)
 Design of tank sluice (outlet for canal)

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 12

Drawings and Project Report
 Drawings:
Index plan showing location (extract of toposheet).

 Key plan showing the catchment and the command

 Submergence plan with contours (generated from total station

for new tank and drawn in Autocad for old tank)
 L-section of tank – Alignment of dam, location of canal outlet,
waste weir and tail channel, typical cross sections.
 Cross section of bund – with phreatic line for stability analysis

 Cross and L- section of canal

All the drawings must be neatly drawn in Autocad.

Original field drawings to be preserved & submitted by each batch.
The Project Report shall be neatly bound in standard format after
each component is approved by the concerned faculty.

Old Tank Project
 Purpose:
 To increase the capacity & serviceability of the existing tank.
 Data to be collected:
 Salient features of the tank : Type, geometry, purposes, when built
 Hydrological data: Same as for New tank
 Geological data : Same as for new tank
 Survey:
 Submergence survey (Total station).
 Survey for dam profile (Block contour survey) along the top,
downstream slope and base of the tank.
 Survey for extension of waste weir & tail channel (Alignment Traverse)
 Survey for extension of canal alignment (Traverse)

25 January 2020 S. G. Joshi 15

Old Tank Project
 Design:
 Hydrology, water planning : same as new tank. Except that
you have to find out the possible increase in command based
on availability of extra water or vice versa. Find out the extra
dam height required to store this extra water.
 Stability of dam section: existing section as well as new
section with increased height and base width.
 Sufficiency of canal outlet – modifications if any.
 Sufficiency of the canal section for the increased command
and max discharge.
 Sufficiency of waste weir.
