Research
According to research report, the Global Disabled and Elderly Assistive
Technologies market is accounted for $43.1 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach
$69.8 billion by 2022 growing at a CAGR of 7.15%. Supportive government
07 initiatives and development of products such as implants, wheel chairs, transfer lifts
are some of the factors driving the market. However, fewer acceptances due to high
cost is the major factor limiting the market growth.

Communication Aids segment accounted for the largest share during the forecast
period owing to the factors such as the rise in the ageing population and high
advancements in technology. North America accounted for the largest share in the
market. The growth is attributed to high number of manufacturers in this region.
Moreover, Asia Pacific is expected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast

The objectives of special seating systems for children or adults with severe postural
impairments are generally to maximize comfort and promote function, thus
improving the quality-of-life of the patient and possibly of their carers. However, to
date there have been relatively few published reports that point to the use of
instruments to determine the efficacy of the use of adaptive or special seating
devices by individuals with multiple disabilities. Furthermore, even the few studies
that have attempted to adopt a broad-based approach to outcomes measurement
have limitations.
Research
Public transit vehicles are increasingly required to be accessible to people who use
wheelchairs.
In the UK, all single deck buses are required to be accessible to wheelchair users by
09 2017, all double-deck coaches by 2020. Similar requirements exist for trains, with
most trains already incorporating a number of wheelchair-spaces.
The EU has required airline and airport operators to support the use of airports and
airliners by wheelchair users and other 'Persons with Reduced Mobility' since the
introduction of EU Directive EC1107/2006.
In Los Angeles there is a program to remove a small amount of seating on some
trains to make more room for bicycles and wheelchairs.
New York City's entire bus system is wheelchair-accessible, and a multimillion-
dollar renovation program is underway to provide elevator access to many of the
city's 485 subway stations.
Research
In Adelaide, Australia, all public transport has provision for at least two wheelchairs
per bus, tram or train. In addition all trains have space available for bicycles.
The Washington, D.C. Metro system features complete accessibility on all its
10 subways and buses.
In Paris, France, the entire bus network, i.e. 60 lines, has been accessible to
wheelchair users since 2010.
In the United States a wheelchair that has been designed and tested for use as a seat
in motor vehicles is often referred to as a "WC19 Wheelchair" or a "transit
wheelchair". ANSI-RESNA WC19 (officially, SECTION 19 ANSI/RESNA WC/VOL. 1
Wheelchairs for use in Motor Vehicles) is a voluntary standard for wheelchairs
designed for use when traveling facing forward in a motor vehicle. ISO 7176/19 is
an international transit wheelchair standard that specifies similar design and
performance requirements as ANSI/RESNA WC19.
Research
There are special vans equipped for wheelchairs. These vans are large and have a
ramp on a side door or the back door, so a wheelchair can get inside the vehicle
while the user is still in it. Some of the back seats will be removed and replaced with
11 wheelchair security harnesses. Sometimes wheelchair vans are equipped so the
wheelchair user can drive the van without getting out of the wheelchair.
A vehicle can be equipped with hand controls. Hand controls are used when a
person can't move their legs to push the pedals. The hand controls do the pushing
of the pedals. Some racecar drivers are paralyzed and use hand controls.

This concludes the Secondary Research Regarding Seating for people with Physical
Disability in a broad sense.

Innovation Trends in Disabled and Elderly Assistive Technologies

Market – Global Market to Reach $69.8 billion by 2022
Primary Research
For the Primary Research, I have visited about five garages to get first hand info on
the modifications done on cars to help justify the relevence of my idea to the the
core way of helping the disabled people. I've also collected some data from random
13 people regarding the above mentioned topic about their notions and knowledge
regarding it. In addition to this I have been to a place where they manufacture the
swivel mechanisms as an addition to a seat to help the disabled people get in.

of accessability to the back of some vans.

Conclusion
The only input I got from this place was to checkout the
ramps and to see a pre installed one to visualize the
mechanism in it.

Ergonomic Research
Every car drivers have their own preferred driving position and posture that may
differ from each other. The criteria of comfort in driving may be perceived
differently by drivers with different physical built or gender. A safe and comfortable
20
driver’s seat plays a very important role in car design and fabrication. “Today, car
drivers are more concerned with their driving safety and comfort, thus they
perceived that comfort must have the same level of importance as with functional
and aesthetic design of automobile”. Therefore, ergonomics is a very important
factor that needs to be incorporated in the design of driver’s car seat to satisfy
drivers’ requirements to ensure drivers’ safety and comfort. Ergonomically designed
driver’s car seat is important because it could enhance drivers’ safety and comfort
while they are driving and controlling the car. Twenty percent of road accidents
were due to driver’s physical fatigue. Physical fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders
among drivers were mainly due to incorrect driving postures.
Ergonomic Research
Automobile seat play an important role in improving the comfort of professional
driver. It is the driver who gets more fatigue than the passenger which is serious
issue for the professional drivers. Therefore while considering vehicle seat human
factors aspects play an important role. Automotive ergonomics is the study of how
21
car seat can be designed better for human use. Onawumi (2012) has evaluated
various musculoskeletal problems that are prevalent among professional drivers
worldwide. Safety, comfort and effective seat system has been area where
continuous research and efforts are being made. Different approaches have been
taken into account for making automobile seat comfortable. Approaches like
mechanical, pressure, vibration, ergonomic, medical etc. are being used. The goal
of these various approach is to decrease risk of injury or fatigue to enhance workers
productivity. So that it could maximize the natural ability of body to move and
respond to physical stress. There are two types of body part injuries that occurred
during driving. Whiplash injury and low back pain are two most common injuries
which occur among the professional drivers.
Ergonomic Research
The function of the design of driver’s seat is to provide a convenience driving. The
purpose of this study was to provide recommendations based on the study on
Indonesian driver’s posture in electric city car by using goniometer as the
measurement tool. This study was conducted in several stages, namely: setting up
22
the existing seat, documenting human models as sitting on the seat, and measuring
the images, particularly the angles of necks, shoulders, elbows, wrists, torsos, hips,
knees and ankles by using goniometer. The results of body joint angles’
measurement were used to determine the convenience of electric car’s driver seat.
The recommendations for the safety and the convenience of the driver seat were
formulated based on the findings of this study, including: the backrest should be
adjustable in accordance with the incline angle, the backrest should be adjustable
up and down as well as in and out, the seat height should be adjustable, the seat
bottom incline must be adjustable, the seat bottom should be adjustable particularly
for driver with short stature to reach accelerator and brake pedals, the seat back
should be linearly adjustable with the seat bottom.
Ergonomic Research
Electric cars are important since they reduce noise and air pollution as well as reduce global
dependence on fossil fuels. The rapid development of electric cars as modes of transportation
also involves the design improvement in accordance with the needs of society. In addition to
environmentally friendly, they are also designed for the convenience of the users. Moreover, they
23
are vehicle which type is designed and created to be used effectively in performance, time
efficiency, and convenience. For the convenience while driving, the driver’s seat becomes one of
the important factors. In general, driver’s seat should shape driver’s posture angle. Similarly, the
driver’s seat of electric car will affect the convenience of the driver while driving. If a design
involves ergonomic principle, it seems that driver’s body posture while driving would be
convenient. On the contrary, driver’s seat which does not match the anthropometry of its users
would cause inconveniency. Anthropometric data of each population is certainly different, for
instance anthropometric data of the drivers in England and those in Norway. Likewise, the
dimensions of the Indian posture which is usually smaller than those of Europeans and Americans.
Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on the ergonomic aspects of the electric car, in this
case the driver’s seats.
