CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Medical treatment is highly sought due to the high level of people who are getting

ill. But it has a lot of risks that need guidelines in order for it to be practiced correctly.

These guidelines will help medical practitioners in decision-making. Risks cannot be

avoided since it is associated with patient care.

This is where Risk Management (RM) plays a huge role for the clinical and

hospital processes. Risk Management (RM) is the procedure of minimizing the impact of

risks. Wherein according to NEJM Catalyst, “Hospitals and other healthcare systems are

expanding their risk management programs from the primarily reactive ones and promote

patient safety and prevent legal exposures.” Risk management will help the hospital to

draw the line for the protection of both patients and allied health workers.

There are different forms of Risk Management (RM), and this study is all about

Clinical Risk Management (CRM), wherein it is a form of Risk Management (RM) that

focuses on clinical processes. It is one of the most controversial matters in the healthcare

system today. It can define a clinic or hospital if they are trustworthy enough for the

patients to trust them.

Clinical Risk Management (CRM) focuses on how one can manage, identify, and

contain risks pertaining to the safety of the patients, allied health workers, and non-allied

health workers. It also ensures the safety of the environment for the patients, allied health

workers, and non-allied health workers.

As NEJM Catalyst said, Clinical Risk Management is essential because it can

help reduce medical errors that will threaten the clinics mission and protect them against

financial liability. It aims to continuously improve the quality of the services and secure

high standards of care.

This research study aims to show the awareness of the students in a Private

Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Manila when it comes to the Clinical Risk

Management Protocols.
Theoretical Framework

The study is based on WHO Safety Curriculum. An allied health student, along

with everyone else who works in a hospital or clinic has a responsibility to take the

correct action when they see an unsafe situation or environment. Hospitals and health

organizations use a variety of methods for managing risks.

The success of a risk management program, however, depends on the creating and

maintaining safe systems of care, designed to reduce adverse events and improve human

performance. Many hospitals have well established systems in place for reporting patient

falls, medication errors, retained swabs and misidentification of patients. Nevertheless,

they are only beginning to focus on all aspects of clinical care to see opportunities for

reducing risks to patients.

The following simple step process is commonly used to manage clinical risks:

Identify risks, Analyze risks,Evaluate risks and Treat/manage risks.

Research Paradigm
Statement of the Problem

1.        What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1        Sex;

1.2        Age;

1.3        Year

1.4 Course

2. What will be the level of awareness in clinical risk management of first year to third

year allied health students based on identifying the steps used in managing clinical risks

in terms of:

2.1 Identify risks

2.2 Analyze risks

2.3 Evaluate risks

2.4 Treat/manage risks

3. What risks can be identified by the first year to third year allied health students?

4. Will there be a significant relationship between the level of awareness in clinical risk

management and the demographic profile of Allied Health Students?

5. Based on the findings, what teaching plan may be proposed?

Hypothesis

1.   The level of awareness in clinical risk management of first year to third year

allied health students based on identifying the steps used in managing clinical

risks is unsatisfactory.

 2.     There are no risks that can be identified by the first year to third year allied

health students.

3.     There will be no significant relationship between the level of awareness in

clinical risk management and the demographic profile of Allied Health Students.

4.     There will be no teaching strategy may be proposed.

Significance of the Study

The result will be great benefit to the following:

Allied Health Teachers - The result of this study will be beneficial to the allied

health teachers in order for them to know where the allied health students have a lack of

awareness in terms of different risk management in hospitals and clinics.

School Administration - The result of this study will give knowledge on what

appropriate actions for the teachers and students to be aware enough regarding clinical

risk management.

Allied Health Students - refers to the first year to third year students who are

currently enrolled for the second semester, SY 2020-2021 under the College of Allied

Health Sciences. It includes the following programs; Nursing, Radiologic technology,

Medical Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Psychology and Physical Therapy.

Future Researcher - This research will be useful for the researcher who would

plan to make any related study about clinical risk management.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study is specifically focused about the awareness of allied health students that

are enrolled in the second semester, school year 2020 - 2021 at PHINMA St. Jude

College in Manila about clinical risk management. The respondents are only limited to

the 1st year to 3rd year students of the PHINMA St. Jude College in the different allied

health courses like radiologic technology, nursing, medical technology, pharmacy,

respiratory technology, psychology and physical therapy.

The researchers cannot know if the respondents would get some answers on the

internet and since the questionnaires that the researchers will use are by online and the

researchers will distribute the questionnaires by the use of the Google Forms. The

researchers would only depend on the results of the data by the honesty and integrity of

the participants that they’ve given us and the researchers would respect all of the answers

of the participants. Knowing the awareness of clinical risk management because by the

1st year to 3rd year allied health students there will be a time when they will be on their

clinical internship they know how to minimize or prevent the risk in the health care

facilities.

Definition of Terms

Allied Health Students – the participants that the researchers selected to

participate in the study.

Awareness Level - level of knowledge of the respondents about Clinical Risk

Management.

Clinical Risk Management - is a tool for minimizing the risk and harm to the

patient, allied health workers and non-allied health workers.

Private Higher Education Institution (HEI) - this refers to PHINMA Saint Jude

College.

Risks – are the different accidents that occur in the hospitals or clinical settings.

Risk Management Program - a program that is implemented to reduce the

problems or risk that occurs in hospitals or clinics.

WHO Safety Curriculum - a curriculum guide that equips Allied Health

Practitioner with essential patient safety learning in order for them to practice safely in all

their clinical activities.
