This science fair project tests whether oranges, peeled oranges, and apples sink or float in water. The hypothesis was that oranges and apples would sink, while peeled oranges would float, since peeling removes weight. The results found that oranges and apples floated, while peeled oranges sank. This is because oranges and apples contain air pockets in their peels that make them less dense than water, allowing them to float, while peeled oranges are denser and sink.

•In this at home science experiment we will
determine whether or not ORANGES, PEELED ORANGES, and APPLES sink or float in water. Hypothesis
• My hypothesis is that the ORANGE and the APPLE are going
to sink in the water and the PEELED ORANGE is going to float in the water. • The reason I think this is because once you peel an orange they results in weighing less and if they object weights less then I think it won't be able to sink. Materials
• The five easy to obtain materials needed to complete this
experimentation is -Three clear functional containers -Water -ORANGE -PEELED ORANGE -APPLE Procedure • Step 1: Grab your three clear functional container and fill them with water (do not fill it all the way to avoid spilling water) • Step 2: Make sure to peel only ONE of the oranges • Step 3:Put one fruit in each of the three functional containers with water and record the results Results/DATA The results for my at home science experiment: • The ORANGE FLOATED • The PEELED ORANGE SINKED • The APPLE FLOATED Sink Or Float Results
ORANGE PEELED APPLE
ORANGE
FLOAT YES NO YES
SINK NO YES NO Conclusion
• In conclusion I was wrong about my hypothesis. I learned that the
PEELED ORANGE actually sinks and the ORANGE and APPLE float • In this experiment I learned that the reason the ORANGE floats is because the peel that it has is filled with air pockets which makes the ORANGE less dense so it floats. The PEELED ORANGE is more dense, therefore it sinks. APPLES are filled with air, making it less dense, concluding to it floating • A additional question that my project left me with that can be examined further is what other fruits are able to sink/float
