1. PURPOSE:

The purpose of this method statement is to define construction sequence in relation to


the installation of GI Ducting for air conditioning and ventilation system. Precautions to
be observed during unloading, lifting, shifting, storing and installation of GI Ducting. All
works will be carried out in accordance to site safety rules and regulations as guided by
HSE Management. This method statement shall be read in conjunction with project
specification, relevant codes for installation & testing.

2. SCOPE:

This method statement defines the construction sequence in relation to the installation of
GI duct. The work will be coordinated along with other services during the entire execution.
The work will be in line with SMACNA standards for installation of ductwork and quality
measures. This method statement is proposed for the installation of duct and duct
accessories such as volume control dampers, fire / smoke dampers, motorized dampers,
VAV’s, sound attenuators, fresh air / external louvers shall comprises of AHU ducting,
FCU ducting, fresh and exhaust fan duct works. The aim of the method statement is to set
out the procedures, precautions to observe during unloading, storage, lifting and shifting of
duct material to desired location, installation sequence. All works shall be carried out in
accordance to Site safety rules and regulations as guided by the Engineer, This method
statement shall be read in conjunction with the applicable project specification and testing.

6. METHODOLOGY

Material Receipt

 The prefabricated duct pieces and GI duct sheets for suite to site fabrication works will be
received at Site Yard/Storage facility. These prefabricated duct pieces and GI duct sheets
will be checked for manufacture details, as per duct tag list, delivery note and approved
material submittal to ensure delivery is correct.
 Verification of quantity as per the delivery notes / identification labels and test certificates
of the sheets shall be done by the fabrication supervisor.
 Inspect the material upon delivery.
 Details of the material receipt, test certificate will be conveyed to CtrlS MEP Project
Engineer and Quality Engineer.
 Duct fabrication Yard/Storage Yard in charge will be responsible for arrangement of
unloading L shape prefabricated duct pieces and GI duct sheets at fabrication yard.

Material Handling (Material and Equipment preservation).

 Use hand gloves for shifting / unloading / loading / handling etc.

 Unload duct material manually and store the material at designated place.
 For movement of the material and delivery vehicles, CtrlS safety guidelines shall be
followed.
 Do not drop or drag the material.
 Always be careful to avoid damage when handling.
Material Storage (Material Storage and Management Method)

 Fabrication supervisor should maintain the proper storage as per the site requirement.
 Cover the duct material with the tarpaulin/polyethylene sheets to protect from the ingress
foreign objects and rain.
 Damaged materials should be kept in designated area & tagged and shall be taken out of the
site from time to time with information to the fabrication yard.
 Check the duct sealant for self-life and dispose the damaged or expired material as
recommended by the manufacturer

General Work Methodology

Duct Fabrication (Suit to Site Condition)

 Check for the presence of latest GFC/Shop Drawings.


 The sheets shall be cut, folded, and joined along the longitudinal seam as per the approved
GFC/Shop drawings.
 Conduct inspection of ducts at site fabrication yard with the Engineer for correctness
of construction.
 After completing the inspection insulation shall be provided as per the approved material
submittal. Method of insulation of duct pieces will be submitted separately as a separate
method statement.
 This insulated duct shall be transported to site.

Preparatory Arrangements (Prior Preparations before Commencement of


works)

 Check for latest GFC/Shop drawings.

 Review the risk assessment with the current site conditions.


 Check for approachability to work area.

 Check the size, class and quantity of the ducts, fittings & accessories are as per the MAS
and Approved GFC drawing.

 Check material test report or certification in compliance with approved material specification.

 Check the dimensions of materials to ensure that they are in compliance with requirement.
Also check the thickness of ducts, fittings and accessories are in line with the requirement.

 Check whether the area is clear / civil & HSE clearance available for installation.

 Check for any physical damage to the ducts, fittings & accessories.

 Ensure the certified scaffolding/ mobile elevated working platform (optional) is available at
site for working at height.

 Mark the location of the duct supports (e.g., trapeze, wall bracket, Riser supports) as per the
approved shop drawing in coordination with the other services.

 Ensure the surface is dry.

 Ensure easy access and sufficient clearances are provided for future maintenance of fire
dampers, fire / smoke dampers, VCD’s / actuators, VAV’s / actuators. Check for location
and provision of sleeves for fire dampers.

Installation of GI Ducting Installation (Sequence of work with Activity)

 Install anchor fasteners, full threaded rod hangers and MS angle supports in location as per
approved GFC drawing and in coordination with other services.

 Install the transition pieces for the wall / slab opening as per the duct size and approved
construction drawing.

 Install ducting as per approved GFC drawings upon completion of joinery of sections of
ductwork. Ducts shall be cleaned inside and outside to avoid any dirt.
 Raise and install the next duct section, align it with the previous section and provide the
transverse joints and put the sealant as per approved sample approval.

 All joint (both longitudinal and sectional) shall be sealed with approved duct sealant.

 All excess sealant must be removed.

 Insulate the duct joints after the Engineer inspection.

 Repeat the operation for the complete ducting system.

 All duct supports shall be checked for their straightness and level after installation. Lock
nuts to be tightened after final leveling. All edges of threaded rod and MS angle shall be
touched up with paint.

 The VCD’s, fire dampers, Motorized volume damper, access doors, test holes and fresh
air intakes shall be installed only after the inspection of material as per Client requirement.

 Install volume control dampers, fire dampers, motorized volume dampers, access door, fresh
air intake and sound attenuator is as applicable and as per approved GFC/Shop drawings.

 Additional support shall be provided adjacent to dampers, grilles, diffusers, or other similar
equipment so as to prevent duct distortion.

 Ensure that the fire dampers shall be installed in duct works at all the fire rated
walls/slabs penetrations as per the specification.

 Install access doors / access panels in supply, return and exhaust air ducts, as required and as
per approved GFC/shop drawings to facilitate the routine inspection, maintenance, cleaning
of filters, dampers, fire / smoke dampers and the other air conditioning and ventilation
equipment.
 Flame retardant, waterproof flexible duct connectors shall be fitted to the suction and
discharge of all fans and air handling equipment’s, ceiling suspended air handling
equipment’s, treated fresh air units and proper hanging support shall be provided.

 Conduct inspection of ducts installation with Engineer for correctness of construction.

 Install collars and flexible duct for grilles and diffusers in coordination with false ceiling
/ reflected false ceiling.

 Installed fresh air louvers in fresh air duct systems and external louvers in exhaust
ventilation duct systems as per the approved GFC/Shop drawings.

 The droppers for Supply Air/Return Air/Exhaust Air grilles, diffusers and registers shall be
installed as per approved ceiling coordinated drawings.

 The Supply Air/Return Air/Exhaust Air grilles, diffusers and register shall be installed after
the readiness of suspended as per approved ceiling coordinated drawings.

 Red line mark-ups and as built drawing to be prepared incorporating the modifications if any
for the installed ducting layout.
GI Ducting Installation in the Shafts

 Ensure that the duct supports installed properly.

 Maintain the span of each support as mentioned in the Approved GFC drawing

 Weld the duct supports to the insert plates provided in the ATC tower building.

 Ensure that duct locations are coordinated with the other services in the shaft.

 Raise and install the next duct section, align it with the previous section and provide the
transverse joints and put the sealant as per approved sample approval.

 Bolts nuts shall be provided on both the ends to hold the vertical duct in the shaft

 All joint (both longitudinal and sectional) shall be sealed with approved duct sealant.

 All excess sealant must be removed.

 Insulate the duct joints after the Engineer inspection.


GI Ducting Installation Under the raised floor

 Ensure that the duct supports shall be installed properly on the floor.

 Check the intermediate distance from one support and the other as per shop drawings.

 Ensure that duct locations are coordinated with the other services.

 Now install the duct sections, align it with the previous section and provide the transverse
joints and put the sealant as per approved sample approval.

 Bolts nuts shall be provided on both the ends to hold the vertical duct in the shaft.

 All joint (both longitudinal and sectional) shall be sealed with approved duct sealant.

 All excess sealant must be removed.

 Insulate the duct joints after the Engineer inspection

Volume Control Damper (VCD) Installation Procedure

 Ensure OPEN and shut in raised letter marked on VCD.

 Install the dampers in the duct works at the desired locations and as per flow directions as
shown in the GFC/Shop drawings and site conditions.

 Ensure the VCD shall be supported suitably.

 VCD connections (flange connections/screw/rivet) to duct works shall be as per approved


typical installation drawings.

 Ensure the connection shall be made air-tight with suitable gaskets and duct sealant to be duly
applied at the joints. All excess sealant must be removed.

 Provide the additional supports near the dampers

 Ensure that the blades are set and locked to the required position for the system air
balancing.

Fire/Smoke Damper Installation Procedure

 Install the approved /make and model of Fire/Smoke Dampers-fusible like type, in the duct
works at the desired locations, where the ducts passing through the fire rated walls as
shown in the GFC/Shop drawings and specifications.

 Ensure that the dampers should be installed in flow directions.

 Connections (flange connections/screw/rivet) to duct works shall be as per approved typical


installations.

 Ensure that the fusible links of fire dampers should be in the direction /position so that the
maintenance (replacement of the fusible link) will be easy and accessible.

 Ensure that sufficient supports to be installed for dampers.

 Ensure that fire damper shall be held in the open position by a quick release fusible link
device set to fuse at 70degC.

 Provide access panel at the location of the fire damper for maintenance (re setting of the
fusible link).
Motorized Fire/Smoke Damper Installation Procedure

 Install the actuator for motorized damper as per approved typical installation drawing.

 Ensure the motorized fire/smoke damper equipped with an actuator which is of spring return
type and shall allow the damper to close rapidly when actuated by fire signal.

 Multiple section arrangement -vertical and horizontal shall be as per the manufacturer product
catalogue.

 The motorized damper open/close arrangement system to be monitored by building


management system or dedicated monitoring system.

 The controls installation part of BMS scope. Separate Method statement shall be
submitted for the control installation.

 Provide Access panel at the location of the MFD/Smoke dampers and ensure that the handle
position of the damper shall be easy to access, so that the balancing, maintenance will be
easy.
Fresh Air/Exhaust Louver Installation

 Install the approved make and model of louvers with bird screen (For Exhaust Louvers) and
Pre-filters (For Fresh Air Louvers) made of Extruded Aluminum construction (frame and
blades) in the duct works at the desired locations as shown in GFC drawings.

 Ensure that access is provided for removal of pre-filters (For Fresh Air Louvers).

 Ensure proper supports are provided as per GFC /Shop drawings.

7. Inspection & Testing


Testing
 The duct and joints shall be Inspected co jointly by CtrlS Engineer for visual
testing.
 Verify all the ducts are free of the air leakage.

 All the joints shall be sealed properly before testing.


 Light test to be done in the dark atmosphere to get better visibility of leakage joints.

 Close all the ends of the duct and place the light inside the duct.

 Ensure the light should reach the other end of the duct and every corner of the duct.

 Now check for the leakages in the joints as light visible in the joints if leakage appears.

 Seal the visible leakage joints with the sealant and recheck for the leakage.

Inspection
 The duct and joints shall be selected co jointly by CtrlS Engineer for visual testing.

 The in process works shall be monitored for quality of workmanship and installation against
approved shop drawings by contractor’s site engineer
 Upon the arrival of ducts to site the duct works shall be inspected by contractors site engineer
for visual and dimensional checks
 All the works shall be inspected for the conformance towards project specifications

 The inspection formats shall be used in accordance with the requirements of main
contractors Unique documentation procedures
 After contractors site inspection the inspection request shall be officially submitted to
engineer for inspection and approval.

RECORDS:

 All inspection formats and other records shall be as per project approved forms.

documentation procedures
8. Health and Safety Control Measures

Safety

 All activities will be executed in accordance with contractors HSE Plan and HSE guidelines.

 Safety risk assessment shall be performed for every job or task, which has the potential for
harm.
 Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available with all the workers.
 All required equipment and tools should be checked before start of work for suitability
and integrity.
 All safety Guidelines shall be adhered as per approved HSE Plan.
 Necessary permit to work to be obtained as per the site requirement.

9. HOUSE-KEEPING:

 Effective housekeeping can eliminate some work place hazards and helps to get job done
safely and properly.

 The work area shall be maintained neat and tidy as reasonably practical all the time.
