HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH BIRDS
The best moments of my life have been with birds. These
enchanting creatures mesmerised me as a kid and they still
do at age 68.

12 THE VINACEOUS AMAZON (AMAZONA
VINACEA) AT LORO PARQUE
The Vinaceous Amazon was first bred at Loro Parque in
1990, when a single chick was hand-reared. The pair proved
to be very unreliable when it came to incubating their eggs
and so have always had their eggs removed for artificial or
foster incubation and rearing.

22 CAGE AND AVIARY FINCH BREEDING
Housing is the first item we must consider. It always amazes
me the adaptability of the birds we keep.

30 THE INDIAN RUNNER DUCK AS AN EGG BREEDER
The Indian Runner duck is the best egg layer of all duck
breeds and if given proper care and good feed will compare
12
favorably with hens in egg producing ability.

34
KEEPING AND BREEDING OF THE GREY-HEADED
LOVEBIRD (AGAPORNIS CANUS)
I have bred this species in both bigger aviaries and smaller
cages. However, pairs have never bred when they were in
visual contact with other individuals of the same species.

38 THE BARRABAND PARAKEET AND IT’S MUTATIONS

For years, budgies, also called parakeets, were the most
numerous companion birds, and only recently were overtaken
by cockatiels. If you’re looking at getting one or the other, how
do they compare?

42 WHAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT
Incompatibility can take a variety of forms; Java Sparrows
can intimidate smaller species. Zebra finches, Parsons and
Cut-throats are renowned for interference with the nests of
other species.

Bad manners terrify your birds and many
breeders have awful manners.

2. Learn smooth, slow movements.

Predators rapidly strike or dive at birds,
friends move smoothly and create calm
and confidence. All good horse handlers do
this with horses. Like birds, horses are prey
animals, meaning that they run or fly away
from predators.

3. Set up aviary rules. I generally avoid the

back area of the aviary where the tiered
perches are located. The birds know that
they are safe there. If I must bob under
to get to the back to clean the floor or
whatever, I slowly bend down and look up
at the birds. Most have learned to slowly
fly to the front of the aviary to get out of my
way. I have good manners and wait ten or
twenty seconds till the all clear is sounded
then under I go.
Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). When holding a smaller parrot like a budgie, I let
them try to bite the tip of my fingernail at the correct angle so that they can’t secure a grip 4. Snakes: Snakes are one of the main
(much like another bird’s beak, feathers or feet), so they tend to stop trying. predators of birds, along with hawks. Birds
are programmed to panic at the very sight
of a snake. Anything long, thin and moving
is a snake, it must be! No bird is likely to
hang around to decide if a long, thin moving
thing is actually a snake, by then, if it is a
snake, the bird would be dead.

You have two snakes, one on either side of

your shoulders (we call them arms). Flail
your arms around and your birds will get a
fright. This is a fair description of you, too,
that is how you are behaving. If I had a cent
for every time I have seen a budgie fancier
gesticulating wildly with their arms and
hands at a poor budgie in a show cage, I
would be very wealthy. How could anyone
not notice the poor bird pulling its feathers
close to its body in sheer terror?
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita). There have been times, also in the wild,

around like mad, trying to escape. Show
them the broom from outside the aviary;
move it very slowly inside. Start sweeping
slowly, until they realise that it isn’t a snake,
then gradually speed up, but never sweep
rapidly, this will have a disastrous effect.

If you doubt the snake stuff, gently

disconnect an aviary perch that the birds
have perched on all their lives, now move
it around the aviary. You will see your birds
flying in utter panic. Anything long, thin and
moving is a snake. If it is only long and
thin, that’s OK. So, put your hands in your
pockets when you look at birds in small
cages. If you must use a stick to get them up
on the perch, remember that the stick too is
a snake. Approach the bird slowly with the
stick from below the cage. Predators like

LARGER PARROTS AND COCKATOOS
These birds have very interesting body
language and some are as bright as
chimpanzees. Often they have specialized
greeting ceremonies that you can learn.
Most Cockatoos have a simple meet and
greet ceremony that is equivalent of our
handshake approach of an outstretched
open hand and broad smile.

They chew their beaks while their feathers

are relaxed, neither held tightly against
the body nor held out erect. This means
“can I be your friend and come closer?”
As an unknown bird approaches, if scared,
they stop chewing the beak and pull their
feathers closer to their bodies. This means
“back off”.

You can copy this. If you want to approach a

cockatoo, hold your index finger and thumb
in a pinch position and rub the index finger
along the tip of the thumb. This mimics the
beak-chewing action. The bird should then
chew its beak, so you are OK to approach.
If the bird stops chewing and pulls in its
feathers, take a step back immediately, but
keep the chewing action going with your
fingers. Wait until the bird fluffs up and
starts chewing before you slowly start to
approach again. This advance and retreat
usually convinces the bird that you have
both good manners and intentions.

If the bird won’t play this game, it is

more pairs are maintained in suspended

the chick had severe spinal deformities and

that the deformities could not be corrected

appeared that our caution was justified, as
one of the chicks showed early signs of a

and no further complications were noted.
The source of the fungal infection remains
unidentified; both parents have undergone
a thorough examination and neither of them
appear to be the source of the infection.
The nest-box has been replaced and, as is
now a precaution with all of our birds which
parent-rear their young, the wood shavings
inside the nest- boxes are treated with an
anti-fungal agent each time the nesting
medium is replaced. The rearing of six
young from a new pair in 1996 means that
once these birds mature we will be able to

few years we will be able to achieve the

the Vinaceous Amazon will be one of the
highest priorities.

These may then be part of the diagnostic

the oropharynx, fresh feces of the cloaca,
and blood for testing by PCR. These
testing sites can also be used by PCR to
test a well bird to make sure that the bird
does not carry the disease; such tests are
often recommended during the first visit to
the avian veterinarian.

From this information, you, as a good

bird owner, then know that you should
not take your bird to functions with other
birds unless all are tested and negative
for C. psittaci. Also, because the organism
can be aerosolized, I recommend against
purchasing food from bulk bins.

Treatment for Psittacosis

The traditional treatment of this bacterium
is the use of doxycycline for 45 days. The
reason that the course of therapy is so
long is that the C. psittaci organism can
hide out in the macrophage — a type
of white blood cell in the bloodstream.
Unfortunately, doxycycline cannot reach
the organism in the macrophage when it
is in its non-replicative cycle, but during its
cellular division, which occurs at least two
times during a 45-day treatment period,
the organisms are released from the
macrophage, which provides a time that the
doxycycline can kill them. For this reason,
the bird or birds must be retested after the
end of the treatment period to make sure
that the birds are free from disease and are
not clinical carriers.

Several forms of the drug can be

administered, so options should be
discussed with your veterinarian. A Healthy Cockatiel. Psittacosis is a disease caused by the intracellular bacterium

species of bird. It can also be coated on
specified seeds with oil or administered
directly by mouth. The doses vary based
on the species of birds.

Dangers of Psittacosis
Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease that can
affect people, so it receives a higher level
of attention than other diseases. How
it is reported and treated varies among
countries and even among U.S. states.
In humans, the signs occur about 5 to 14
days after incubation but can take up to a
month to appear. Typically, the symptoms
are non-specific and include headache
and muscle aches, and flu-like symptoms
with upper respiratory signs. People tend
to have swollen lymph nodes with high
fevers, particularly at night. The symptoms
worsen without proper treatment of the
organism. Azithromycin is commonly used
for humans and is an effective form of
treatment.

F
inches are some of the easiest
birds to breed in captivity. Finches
are some of the hardest birds to
breed in captivity. Both statements are
true depending upon whom you talk to,
the species you are talking about and the
personal experience of the aviculturist. I
believe, given the right food, environment
and mate any species can be bred in
captivity. If we look back 30 – 40 years at
the Gouldian Finch (Chloebia gouldiae),
we find a species that was considered all
but impossible to breed except by the most
experienced aviculturist. Today they would
hardly be considered even moderately
difficult for even the novice who has a
minimum of experience.

I recommend that every aviculturist join a

national society dedicated to the birds they
are going to keep. Before you bring a new Goudian Finch chicks in nest. Once the babies hatch I tend to leave the hen and babies

up on them and make certain you will be
able to meet the needs of the bird. If you
cannot stand the thought of feeding baby
mice, it might not be a good idea to bring
home a Hornbill and try to keep it on fruit
alone. The needs of the bird have to be
foremost and if you cannot meet those
needs, resist the impulse to get it.

Housing is the first item we must consider.

It always amazes me the adaptability of the
birds we keep. I buy a bird from a person
who raises all his birds in a basement
bird room under artificial light and 35cm
square cages. I bring the bird home and
place it in an outdoor aviary with natural
sunlight and lots of natural live food. The
bird thrives in both environments, which is
a testament to their adaptability. What we
provide for our birds depends in large part
on what we have available. Warm climate

and the breeding season is through the
cooler months. If we set our birds up in the
middle of summer, the birds are miserable
trying to set and raise babies when the
temperature reach 37+ degrees Celsius.
Most if not all species can be either raised
in aviaries or in individual cages. A lot of it
depends upon the objectives of the keeper.
Some aviculturists are purists and want
to know the specific background of every
bird in their collection. They can tell you the
ancestry back for multiple generations and
know the personalities of every member
of their breeding stock. This is very labor
intensive as each pair of birds has their
own cage, water, food supply and require
daily maintenance and a feeding schedule.
The alternate method is to keep the birds in
a mixed aviary of compatible species. This
can be considerably simpler to maintain

Outdoor planted aviaries are great for finches if you live in a warmer climate. What we provide for our birds depends in large part
on what we have available. Warm climate breeders keep their birds outdoors, the cages and aviary tend to be a bit roomier and the
breeding season is through the cooler months.

Breeding tends to be rather haphazard results. Aviary breeding may work better days. The breeding cages may range

This is not always the case and some hens
sit from day one. I do not like for my hens
to sit on useless clutches so I candle every
egg that the hen allows. I say when the hen

temperamental. I have had Gouldian hens
that would abandon a nest if disturbed.
This is not normally a problem with that

the Parrot Finches. For candling the eggs

with it. This gives the baby something to
lean on and helps keep the weight of the

fertile eggs I toss the clear ones. If all are

One has to be careful of where you get
your Indian runner ducks from as they vary
a lot in their capabilities. Trout runners, for
example, which are smaller, do not lay as

The Indian Runner is undoubtedly one of

the finest laying duck breeds, and being a
“land” breed, its main business is to forage
and find most of its food in the natural
season. They are happy to forage for food,
and although can survive on less water, if

Because they forage, keeping this duck

on yield go hand in hand. The Runner lays
a white-shelled egg, although in a few
strains the green egg is noticed, but this
character is not true for all. The white egg
should be bred for. In regards to colour of The best egg-producers are those with good carriage, fine heads and necks, good sharp

Some history to this egg-laying duck breed;

the Indian Runner duck was first brought
from India by a sea captain who, when
ashore, had been attracted by their peculiar
carriage, active habits, egg-producing
powers and foraging merits. In the 1840s
he brought a few specimens home with
him, and presented them to farmer friends
in Cumberland, England.

Indian Runners immediately got a good

and the progeny spread over the Scottish
border and into Westmoreland. Not till 1890
were the Indian Runners taken up strongly
by the fancier, who then realized that the Runner ducks have been known to lay eggs while still just less than four and a half

which was why I sold the pair to a close
friend.

In 2009, I had a chance to buy two females

of Grey-headed lovebirds again. I really
wanted to get through this challenge and
therefore I took them both. They were two
years old, not in perfect feather condition.
My friend helped me to get two beautiful
males from the Netherlands so I had
two pairs. This time I was really serious
about breeding this species so I bought
three more birds from a Czech zoo. Adult
birds were paired randomly and placed
to adjacent aviaries of size 2 x 1 x 1,2m,
which were separated by double mesh. It
was surprising to see that females were
fighting while males stayed calm. I hung
conventional horizontal nest boxes inside
the aviaries. All of the birds loved unripe
grass spikes. They also consumed apples
and commercial egg food. At that time, I fed my Grey-headed Lovebirds with dry seed mix with grated apple and
carrot. This mixture was dusted with commercial egg food and grinded egg shells.
Unfortunately, some time later I lost one of
the young males which I bought from the
zoo. It happened in a few days and I still do
not know what the cause was. I had really
bad luck with this species, but I was still
hoping that at least one of two pairs might
nest, eventually. At that time I still had one
pair, spare female was sold. Interestingly,
when one of the pairs was removed the
second pair changed their behaviour
completely. Birds started peeling willow and
elder bark and spent considerable amount
of time in the nest boxes. They visited both
– one conventional and one from tree log.

Because the pair stayed undecided on

which nest they wanted to use I wanted
to remove the bigger log, however, upon
inspection, two eggs were found. Finally, I
decided to leave both nest boxes and after
some time the birds stopped visiting the
smaller one. At that time, I fed my Grey-
headed Lovebirds with dry seed mix with I have bred this species in both bigger aviaries and smaller cages. However, pairs have

dusted with commercial egg food and
grinded egg shells. The good thing is that
in this way of feeding birds are forced to dig
through fruits, vegetables and other foods
before they reach their favorite seeds. This
pair also learned to consume pellets.

One hatched chick was found at the next

nest inspection on December 9th. Four
days later two more chicks hatched, two
eggs were infertile. This pair seemed not
to be disturbed by inspections. The female
incubated both eggs and the chicks very
well. The male was mostly staying outside
of the nest. Unfortunately, I lost one of the
chicks. Two others survived and because
their feathers started growing, I was almost
sure that they were two males. At that time,
I found out that the female was plucking
them on their head and back; I decided to
take them out of the nest to hand raise.
In males, the head, neck and upper part of breast are light grey; the rest of their plumage

hens in two rounds. With this I had put
the opaline Barraband on the map! A year
later a green split male with a green hen
gave me one opaline green hen. I had now
enough opalines and it was time to breed
the cinnamon mutation into the opaline. In
2014 I put a cinnamon male together with
a grey-green opaline female. This resulted
in 2grey-green double splits and one green
double split. These double split males
have now been bred to opaline hens and
it is hoped that the combination will give us
opaline cinnamons. In 2014 I also bred my
first opaline male, 10 years after starting
the project!

In 2015 the green opaline male coloured up

and what I expected didn’t happen. All the
breeders I spoke to, and myself, thought
that the bird would have a lot of red on the
head, breast and back. I had suggestions
from many as to how the male would look
when he coloured up, but in the end no one
was right. Instead of more red, the male
developed less red on the chest and the
black under the tail feathers developed red
stripes as in the female. He developed the
red band below the head (on the upper
chest), but it was much broader and what
was most noticeable was that the whole
head was yellow down to his back. I also
discovered that instead of red on the back
he developed yellow-green colour.

2016 (12 years after obtaining my first

opaline) was a very good year for my
opaline Barrabands. I had, amongst
others, 2 pairs of double split x opaline, 2
pairs split x opaline, cinnamon x opaline,
and the opaline male on a green female.
I bred not only two extra males in green
and grey-green opaline, but wonder of
wonders, a cinnamon opaline green
female! Normally with the “crossing over”
between the cinnamon and opaline gene
are the chances only 3% to breed this, but
the very first baby hatched out of a pair
– green/cinnamon/opaline x opaline grey-
green was the young cinnamon opaline
green hen. Now that this “crossing over”
has taken place it will be much easier for
me by using my grey-green/cinnamon/
opaline on this cinnamon opaline green
female to breed cinnamon grey-green
males and females.

Opaline can be very different from what we

know in other parakeet species. It can be
more red or less red, yet out of the less red
birds we can breed birds with a lot of red.
We also speak of red opaline and yellow Male Opaline greygreen (young with lots of red)

One species might be incompatible

with other birds because of the aviary
environment. Many parrot species and
especially canaries are incompatible with a
leafy, planted Finch aviary. Parrots strip off
the leaves while canaries attack the plant
buds so systematically that the plant soon
dies. There are many other groups of birds
that can be considered to add variety to
your Finch aviaries. All you have to do is
work out if they are compatible with your
Finches, with other birds in your aviary,
with your aviary environment and most Java Sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora). I kept some progeny of that nasty Cuban when I

The true quail species, (King Stubble,

Brown, etc.) usually get along fine with all
the Finches and save some from dying
of exposure or cold. An incompatibility
arises because some species of quail
call continuously and tend to attract cats
to the aviary at night. In my experience
this is a good thing provided you have a
solid wall at least a foot high around the
aviary perimeter and an electric fence on
the aviary to give a very clear message
to every cat in the neighbourhood that
the bird aviaries are a ‘no-go area’. I
recommend that every neighbour be given
a cat and the bird keeper educate them
all with an electric fence. This gives you a
very effective deterrent force around your
property against the movement of rats and
mice to (or from) your aviaries. It makes
for much better public relations with your Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus). When I had my aviaries at Denistone, I had

to remain as foster aunts and they drive the
young males away. I have not experienced

However, if you are planning to expand or
to upgrade to insectivores, frugivores, or
nectarivores then you have to plan much
more carefully. In the nonbreeding season
you can get away with feeding every second
day if conditions stay cool. Fruit tends to
go off quickly in warmer weather and when
birds are breeding it may be necessary to
feed twice daily. Holidays become a bit
