Matt:Look at this magazine article, Claire. It’s about some people in California. They live in tree houses.
Claire: Why do they do that?
Matt: According to this article, people are cutting down a lot of trees to make room for houses. The
people in California think if they design tree houses, they will save the trees. But if you ask me,
they’re wrong.
Claire: Why do you think they’re wrong, Matt?
Matt: Because no one will want to live in trees. Look at the house in the picture. A strong wind will
destroy that tree.
Claire: So where do you think people will live in the future?
Matt: How about underwater houses?
Claire: My dad says people will live on the moon one day. But homes in the ocean? How can people live
underwater?
Matt: The same way they can live on the moon. They’ll connect the house to special oxygen tanks.
Claire: Sorry, but I don’t like the idea. On the moon, you can see the stars. It’s dark under the ocean, and
all those fish …
Matt: That’s the best part. Can you imagine sitting in your living room at night and seeing a shark swim
by? Or having lunch while the fish are watching you through your window?
Claire: Well, it sounds terrible! Sharks? Are you mad? I’ll never live underwater.
Matt: You’re being silly. The sharks won’t come into the underwater houses. They’ll be outside, in the
ocean.
Claire: I don’t want to be near a shark. Besides, there’s another problem.
Matt: What is it?
Claire: Well, if students live underwater, they will probably swim to school every day, right?
Matt: I guess so. What’s wrong with that?
Claire: I can’t swim!
Matt: Claire, that’s not a problem. It’s a perfect reason to stay home from school!
