Screed
Different floor constructions

Screed
Screed is a top layer of material laid over a concrete subfloor, that is traditionally
made of sand and cement, similarly to concrete. The thickness is usually 4 to 6 cm.
The function is to obtain one or more of the following purposes:
– to obtain a defined level
– to carry the final flooring
– to provide a wearing surface
– to provide sound insulation Different
types of construction
for screed
Different types of screed: Bonded screed
Cementitious screed Screed which is bonded to the base.
Screed where the binder consists of a cement. Screed laid on a separating layer
Calcium sulfate screed Unbonded screed laid on a separating layer.
Screed where the binder is calcium sulfate. Floating screed
Magnesite screed Screed laid on an acoustic and/or thermal
Screed where the binder consists of magnesium oxide insulating layer and completely separated from
and an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride. other elements of the building.
Mastic asphalt screed Heated screed
Screed where the binder is bitumen. Screed forming part of an underfloor heating
system.

Melvis® C
Powder additives for high quality
conventional cementitious floor screeds (dry mix)

What is Melvis® C?
Melvis® C is the brand name of BASF Construction Solutions GmbH for its powder additives for high
quality conventional cementitious floor screeds (dry mix).
Which benefits can be achieved with Melvis® C powder additives in conventional cementitious
floor screeds?

• Industrial drymix production, high and constant quality

(reliability on jobsite)
• Improvement of finishing process (easy surface
smoothing), more convenient application and reduced
labor costs
• Water reduction capacity and strength increase
• Reduced shrinkage (to avoid cracks and curling)
• Faster drying (ready for floor coverings at earlier times)
• Reduction of cement content (lower raw material costs,
improved carbon footprint and sustainability )

Influences by additives
CM residue moisture Rough estimation

Lab climate 20° C / 60% rF Water, which has to evaporate per m²

Reaching the residual moisture on the construction site depends on the

cement hydration and the rate of evaporation. The evaporation rate is
based on the temperature / rel. Humidity and the air exchange rates.

New Superplasticizer (Melflux® 1022 F)
for calcium sulfate based flowing floor screeds

Polymer and product technology

Melflux® 1022 F consists of a backbone with carboxyl groups and side chains. The backbone with anionic
carboxyl groups is responsible for the adsorption of Melflux® 1022 F on the surface of calcium sulphate
particles. The side chains help to disperse the agglomerated particles which fluidifies the mix and improves
workability (slump keeping capacity) of the calcium sulphate based flowing floor screed.
