CONCRETE

9
Basics of Concrete

Concrete:
A mixture of paste and aggregates. The paste,
composed of cementitious materials, water and
chemical admixtures coats the surface of the
fine and coarse aggregates. Through a chemical
reaction called hydration, the paste hardens and
gains strength to form the rock-like mass known
as Concrete.

Aggregates
Aggregates occupy 60 to 80% of the total volume of concrete and affect the fresh and hardened
properties of concrete. Out of the total composition of aggregate, the fine aggregate consumes around
20 to 30% percent of the volume.

• They give the body to the concrete

• Reduce Shrinkage
• Contribute for the economy of the concrete

14
Advantage of Concrete
•Ingredients of concrete are easily available in most of the places.
•Concrete can be manufactured to desired strength with an economy.
•The durability of concrete is very high.
•It can be cast to any desired shape.
•The casting of concrete can be done in the working site which makes it
economical.
•Maintenance cost of concrete is almost negligible.
•Concrete makes a building fire-safe due to its noncombustible nature.
•Concrete can withstand high temperatures.
•Concrete is resistant to wind and water. Therefore, it is very useful in storm
shelters.

15
Self Compacting Concrete

16
Self Compacting Concrete
• Self compacting concrete (SCC) can be defined as fresh concrete that flows under
its own weight and does not require external vibration to undergo compaction. It is
used in the construction where it is hard to use vibrators for consolidation of
concrete. Filling and passing ability, segregation resistance are the properties of self
compacting concrete.

Advantage of SCC
Development of self-compacting concrete (vibration-free concrete) is a milestone
achievement in concrete technology, which exhibits a number of advantages:

• High performance in its fresh and hardened states

• Cost efficiency (increased speed, reduced labor cost & energy)
• Improved working environment (reduced noise & health hazard)
• Enhancement toward automation of construction process
• Provide Smooth Surface`

Admixture

22
Concrete Admixtures
Admixture is a chemical compound that should be added in
concrete to achieve the desired requirement such as …

Uses
Admixture are used to achieve the Some special characteristics of the Concrete.
• To reduce the water content
• For high strength.
• For acceleration.
• For set retardation.
• For crake control .
• For fly– ash making stronger , more durable and easy to work .
• For silica fume – early strength and reduce permeability.
• For self levelling concrete .
• For saving cement without loosing the mechanical properties of the concrete
Type of Admixture
The present day concrete is incorporated with an admixture and is modified by one or
more properties at fresh or hardened state and are broadly classified as follows :

Chemical admixtures - Accelerators, Retarders, Water-reducing agents ,

Superplasticisers and Hyper Plasticizers.

Mineral admixtures - Fly-ash, Blast-furnace slag, Silica fume and Rice husk bye-
product mineral admixture.

Miscellaneous admixtures - Air entraining and Water proofing agents.

24
Superplasticiser
Superplasticiser is a chemical compound which is used in Concrete,it maintains the
water-cement ratio and provide us workability.
Factors Effecting the Workability
• Type of superplasticizers
• Dosage
• Mix composition
• Variability in cement composition and properties
• Mixing procedure
• Equipments

Curing Compound

28
Concrete Curing Compound
Curing is essential for the hydration of cement in concrete making. So, to maintain required moisture
content, Some precautions are applied. Concrete curing compound is a compound which helps to prevent
the loss of moisture content from the concrete. So, concrete is properly cured which results the full
development of strength of concrete.
Types of Concrete Curing Compounds
• Synthetic Resin Concrete Curing Compound
• Synthetic resins will seal the concrete by forming membrane. If we want to provide plastering, the membrane
can be removed by washing it with hot water.
• Acrylic Concrete Curing Compound
• Acrylic is made of polymers of acrylic acid. It also seals the concrete in good manner. It is having property of
adhesion to the subsequent plaster. No need to wash the surface of acrylic with hot water if we want to provide
plastering.
• Wax Concrete Curing Compound
• Wax compound have similar properties like resin compound. The wax membrane will lose its efficiency with time
increment.
• Chlorinated Rubber Curing compound
• Chlorinated rubber type curing compound will form thick layer when we applied. It seals the concrete tightly and
also fills the minute pores present in the concrete. But the film cannot stay for longer period.
29 It is wear out in
the long run.
Shuttering Oil
Shuttering Oil basically covered or painted before casting on column or any other
structural member
Reason behind this practice was mentioned below::

• It helps easy removal of the shuttering at time of deshuttering the member whereas
the oil must be of good condition. Not too much burnt oil has to be used.
• It helps in the repetitive use of plywood for more project. Otherwise generally it get
swell easily and become unfit for good quality work
• It make a thin layer between the plywood and concrete which help in reducing of
adhesion in the inner surface .
• Provide a good finishing surface after deshuttering .

• Note :: Shuttering oil must be applied after the cleaning of the plywood . Wires Brush
has to be used to apply This
