Waterproofing

Guide Book(DRAFT-R0)

BY : GAIKWAD DIGAMBAR
Overview
 Waterproofing and crack isolation: Waterproofing is an
important element in protecting Buildings. It prevents water
from leaking into unwanted areas where it can cause
damage. At times, this damage will be unseen until it is too
late. We should ensure that our next project includes
properly installed waterproofing systems. Typical types of
areas that require waterproofing are: Roofs, shower,
bathrooms, kitchens, Water tank and STP.
Overview-Products
 Famous brands : Fosroc, Bostik, STP, Pedilite(Dr Fixit), BASF,
Sika.
 Other Brands : Myk laticrete, Asian paint, Alchimica,
Chowgule, Fairmate etc.
Overview- Properties
 Anyproduct selection has to be done based on its
properties and resistance. Following are the details need to
be noted.
 Durablity – Product durability should be checked -10 years
minimum.
 Non corrosive –Material should resist environmental coditions
without rust or deterioration.
 Highly flexible – Concrete have property of shrinkage, to avoid
the effect of shrinkage product should be flexible.
 Adhesion, crack bridging etc.
Features & Benefits-terrace
 Methods of Roof water proofing
 APP Membranes
1. Surface preparation
a) inspect the surface conditions The concrete surface should be levelled, tough and should not have hollow areas or
pot holes Check hollowness by hammering and repair such areas as well as pot holes using polymer modified cement
sand mortar.
b) Allow to cure for at least 72 hour before application of membrane
c) Clean the surface so that it is free from loose dust, particles, oil etc by brooming or vacuum cleaner
d) Apply bitumen based primer as per recommended coverage and allow it to dry till tack free (about 6-8 hours)
2. Application
a) Unroll the membrane and align with proper markings at all over area.
b) Re-roll the roll into its original form so that alignment is not disturbed
c) Point the torch towards the primed surface and then on the underside of the membrane. Torch till the compound
reaches its softening points. The best visual to confirm this is when the embossing on the membrane starts to
disappear.
d) Roll the membrane forward while firmly pressing it to the substrate so that it bonds Keep overlap margin for minimum
100 mm between two adjoining membranes for end laps and a minimum of 50mm for side laps
e) Ensure that a constant flow of bitumen is maintained across the whole width of the roll and that a bead of bitumen
is extruded from all edge which demonstrates that a good seal has obtained The Bitumen membrane applied all
over the terrace, must be finished with a coating of aluminum paint for non trafficable area. For foot trafficable
area, overlay with concrete screed mortar

2. Primer Application
a) Apply primer as per recommended coverage and allow it to dry till tack free (about 6-8 hours or as per manufacturer
recommendations).
b) Expansion Joints, right angles, cracks should be pretreated .
c) Reinforcement with polyester glass fiber – 40 GSM is recommended where movement is possible.
3. Main Coat
a) Main coat should be applied by brush, trowel, squeegee in two coats maintaining the spreading rate to achieve the desired DFT
as per manufacturer recommendation.
4. Ponding
a) Prior to placement of protection, conduct a water ponding test to a minimum depth of 50 mm of water for 24 hours.
5. Curing and protection
a) membrane must be cured for a minimum of 72 hours @ 27º c before placing protection.
b) Where damage to the membrane is possible (by traffic, backfilling, etc) it should be protected by a cementitious screed or
protection boards

Risk and Hazards
 Ingress of water in concrete can seriously damage
reinforcement skeleton by rust, chances of accidents are
prone.
 Bottom services will be affected if leakage is unnoticed.
 Passing dampness can change aesthetical look.
Safety Precautions
 MSDS(material safety data sheet) should be followed strictly.
 Chemical are harmful if swallowed, In case of ingestion
immediate medical attention to be given.
 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of
water and seek medical advice-Use safety goggles
 In case of skin contact wash with soap and plenty of water. Get
medical attention if irritation develops or persists-Use Hand gloves
 It is recommended to wear suitable nose pad during torching
application and surface preparation.
 Dispose balance material as per recommendation mentioned in
MSDS.
