1- A single thread power screw is 25 mm diameter with pitch of 5 mm. a vertical load on
the screw reaches a maximum of 5 kN. The coefficients of friction are 0.06 for the collar
and 0.09 for the threads. The frictional diameter of the collar is 45 mm. find the overall
efficiency and the torque to raise and lower the load
2- A single thread power screw is 25 mm diameter with pitch of 5 mm. The coefficients of
friction are 0.06 for the collar and 0.09 for the threads. The frictional diameter of the
collar is 45 mm. the input power of 3 kW at speed of 60 rpm. Find the axial resisting load
F and the combined efficiency of the screw.
3- Find the power required to drive 40 mm power screw having double square threads with
a pitch of 6 mm and move at 240 rpm and move a load of F=10 kN. The frictional
coefficients are 0.1 for the threads and 0.15 for the collar. The frictional diameter of the
collar is 60 mm.
4- A single square thread power screw is to raise a load of 50 KN. A screw thread of major
diameter of 34 mm and a pitch of 6 mm is used. The coefficient of friction at the thread
and collar are 0.15 and 0.1 respectively. If the collar frictional diameter is 100 mm and
the screw turns at a speed of 1 rev/s find
a. The power input to the screw.
b. The efficiency of the power screw
5- The C-clamp shown in the figure uses a 10 mm diameter square screw with a pitch of
4.5 mm. The frictional coefficient is 0.15 for both the threads and the collar. The collar
has a frictional diameter of 16 mm. The handle is made of steel with allowable bending
stress of 165 MPa. The capacity of the clamp is 700 N (Load).
a. Find the torque required to tighten the clamp to full capacity.
b. Specify the length and diameter of the handle such that it will not bend unless the
rated capacity of the clamp is exceeded. Use 15 N as the handle force

6- A jack uses a single square-thread screw to raise a known load. The major diameter
and pitch of the screw and the thrust collar mean diameter are in the figure. Running
friction coefficients are estimated. Find:
a. Determine the thread depth and helix angle.
b. Estimate the starting torque for raising and lowering the load.
c. Estimate the efficiency of the jack for raising the load.
d. Estimate the power required to drive the screw at a constant 1 revolution per
second.
7- A 50 mm steel plate and 25 mm cast iron plate are compressed with one bolt and nut.
The bolt is 14 mm, determine the suitable length of the bolt round to the nearest 5mm,
and determine the bolt stiffness
