QUALITIES OF A GOOD QUESTIONNAIRE

1. A well-designed questionnaire should meet the research

objectives. This may seem obvious, but many research surveys omit important
aspects due to inadequate preparatory work. Every survey is bound to leave some
questions unanswered and provide a need for further research but the objective of good
questionnaire design is to 'minimise' these problems.

2. It should obtain the most complete and accurate information

m
possible. The questionnaire designer needs to ensure that respondents fully

er as
understand the questions and are not likely to refuse to answer, lie to the interviewer or

co
eH w
try to conceal their attitudes. A good questionnaire is organised and worded to encourage
respondents to provide accurate, unbiased and complete information.

3. Use of simple language that anyone can understand. A well-
ou urc
designed questionnaire should make it easy for respondents to give the necessary
information and for the interviewer to record the answer, and it should be arranged so that
sound analysis and interpretation are possible.

4. Keep it concise and not complicated. It would keep the interview brief
vi y re

and to the point and be so arranged that the respondent(s) remain interested throughout
the interview.

5. Avoidance of Calculations. Questions should not be based on calculations.

Only those questions should be asked which the respondents may reply immediately.

Moreover, questions should avoid memories.

6. Cross Examination. The questionnaire should be set in such a way that there
is

may be cross examination of the information supplied by the informants. In fact, it is a

check on false or inaccurate answers.
Th

7. Multiple questions in question should be avoided. One question

should have one answer. If more than one question needs to be asked than it should be
sh

made a separate question to improve clarity of questions.

8. Neutral Questions. Should know how to word/frame question and words

should be neutral and should not be leading – Whatever your opinion may be, own
opinion should never be reflected in the questions. This is done both intentionally and
unintentionally but should be taken care of.

9. Evokes the truth. When a respondent is concerned about the consequences of
answering a question in a particular manner, there is a good possibility that the answer
will not be truthful. Anonymous questionnaires that contain no identifying information
are more likely to produce honest responses than those identifying the respondent.

10. Follows comfortably from the previous question. Writing a

questionnaire is similar to writing anything else. Transitions between questions should be
smooth. Grouping questions that are similar will make the questionnaire easier to
complete, and the respondent will feel more comfortable.
