<< FLUIDS >>

This module is intended to have you learners of BSCpE first year students to introduce
with fluids at rest.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. Define fluids.
2. Different properties of fluids.
3. Differentiate fluids at rest from fluids in motion.
4. Solve problems related to fluids.

FLUIDS

Fluids is any substances that can flow; we use the term for both
liquids and gases.

FLUIDS AT REST

A fluid at rest is anyway only a clearly defined concept, if it is a liquid substance

confined in a closed container at rest, situated on the fixed part of the earth's surface, e.g.
a reservoir or closed water vessel. Otherwise, fluid is in motion, or is capable of being set
in motion by the slightest disturbance.

3
FLUIDS IN MOTION

Fluids in motion, is capable of being set in motion by the slightest disturbance.

<< FLUIDS >>

Solve the following problems.

1. The density of aluminum is 2.7 g/cc. What volume does 2 kg occupy?

2. Air has a density of 1.29 kg/m3 under standard conditions. What is the mass of
air in a room with dimensions 10 m x 8 m x 3 m ?

3. A 60 kg performer balances on a crane. The end of the crane in contact with

the floor has an area of 0.92 cm2. Find the pressure exerted on the floor by the
crane. (Neglect the weight of the crane.)

4. Compute the average speed of water in a pipe having an internal diameter of

5 cm and delivering 2.5 m3 of water per hour.

5. Exactly 250 ml of fluid flows out of a tube whose inner diameter is 7 mm in a

time of 41 seconds. What is the average speed of the fluid in the tube?
