MIDTERM EXAMINATION in MATH 505 (Probability and Statistics)

Summer, SY: 2020-2021
NAME:
Direction: Read each item carefully and provide the answers as required in each part. Show the solutions where it is
required. Points will be given to the solution.

A. Identify the word or phrase described in each item.

1. In statistics, it refers to any process that generates a set of data.
2. Consider the activity involving the tossing of a die. What is refers to all the possible odd numbers in a given toss.
3. True or False. It is possible to have a negative probability especially for cases that are impossible to happen.
4. It refers to two events A and B when 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 0.
5. It refers to two events A and B if 𝑃 (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 𝑃 (𝐴)𝑃(𝐵).
6. True or False. Discrete random variables can have an infinite number of values.
7. It refers to a random variable which chooses 0 and 1 to describe two possible values.
8. Heights and weights and length of life of a product can be categorized as what random variable?
9. True or False. The area under a continuous probabiltiy distribution is equal to 1.
10. The density of the probability, which varies with x, is described by a mathematical formula f(x). What do we call this
function.
11. If X and y are jointly continuous, then what do we call its function defined by f(x, y)?
12. It refers to the measure of the relationship between the variables X and Y.
13. If X is a discrete random variable with probability distribution f(x), what is the result in summing the products of all x
and f(x) of the distribution?
14. True or False. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance hence it can take a negative value.
15. It refers to the measure of the dispersion of the values of a random variable about the mean.
16. It is a random variable with the mean of 0 and a variance of 1.
17. It is the measure of the degree to which two random variables vary together.
18. It describes the outcome of performing the same experiment over large number of times.
19. True or False. The Gaussian distribution is an example of a continuous probability distribution.
20. True or False. A normal distribution with standardized random variables can approximate the binomial distribution.
21. It is a distribution function for describing events with extremely low probabilites of occurrence within a given time or
location.
22. It states that if you have a population with mean μ and standard deviation σ and take sufficiently large random
samples from the population with replacement , then the distribution of the sample means will be approximately
normally distributed.
23. It is a distribution function in which members of two groups are selected without being replaced.
24. It is used to test the goodness of fit of a distribution of data, and whether the data series are independent.
B. Answer each item carefully. Show your solutions.
25-26. A marble is drawn at random from a box containing 10 red, 30 white, 20 blue, and 15 orange marbles. Find the
probability that it is orange or red.

27-28. A marble A box contains 2 red and 3 blue marbles. Find the probability that if two marbles are drawn at random
(without replacement), both are blue.

29-30. In how many ways can a group of 10 people be divided into three groups consisting of 5, 3, and 2 people?

31-33. An urn holds 5 white and 3 black marbles. If 2 marbles are to be drawn at random without replacement and X
denotes the number of white marbles, find the probability distribution for X.

34-35. The table below shows the distribution function of a random variable X. Determine (a) 𝑃(1 ≤ 𝑋 ≤ 3), and (b)
𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 2).
x 1 2 3 4
F(x) 1/8 3/8 3/4 1

36-37. It is known that a bus will arrive at random at a certain location sometime between 3:00 P.M. and 3:30 P.M. A man
decides that he will go at random to this location between these two times and will wait at most 5 minutes for the bus.
If he misses it, he will take the subway. What is the probability that he will take the subway?

38-40. By investing in a particular stock, a person can make a profit in one year of Php 40000 with probability 0.3 or take a
loss of Php10000 with probability 0.7. What is this person’s expected gain?

41-42. Find the variance of the number of points that will come up on a single toss of a fair die.

43-44. Find the 75th percentile values for the random variable having density function

45-46. Find the covariance of two random variables X and Y if E(X) = 2, E(Y) = 3, E(XY) = 10, E(X2) = 9, E(Y2) = 16.

47-48. Out of 800 families with 5 children each, how many would you expect to have 3 boys? Assume equal probabilities
for boys and girls.

49-52. On a statistics examination the mean was 78 and the standard deviation was 10. Determine the grades of two
students whose standard scores were -0.6 and 1.2, respectively.

52-53. If 3% of the electric bulbs manufactured by a company are defective, find the probability that in a sample of 100
bulbs, 3 bulbs will be defective.

52-54. Out of 60 applicants to a university, 40 are from the East. If 20 applicants are to be selected at random, find the
probability that 10 will be from the East.

55-56. A coin is tossed three times. If X is a random variable giving the number of heads that arise, construct a table
showing the probability distribution of X.

57-58. Let X and Y be random variables having joint density function

Does (a) E(X + Y) = E(X) + E(Y). Explain.

59-60. Evaluate the probability of not getting a 1, 2, or 3 in 4 tosses of a fair die.
