7 Welcome to another learning episode in mathematics. Yeah, I know that it’s easy. But this time
8 I’ll show you some math business (FLAUNT THE TIE AND THE TUXED0) by making a difference in
9 word problems. Yes, word problems! Does that sound fun?

12 TEACHER: Last time, tinuruan kayo ni teacher na mag-subtract. Kaya naman magsisimula tayo
13 sa isang pasiklaban. Lets call this MATHENIK CHALLENGE (MATHENIK CHANLENGE on screen)

18 Remember we can also check if your answer is correct by adding the difference and the

19 subtrahend. Our answer is correct if their sum is equal to the minuend. Lets see!

5 6 – 8 cannot be done directly because the minuend is smaller than the subtrahend. So you have

6 to make it 16 – 8 which is equal to 8 by borrowing.

7 Instead of 7 -4 it will be 6-4 since we borrowed 1 awhile ago. And 6 -4 is 2.

8 And finally 2 -1 since we didn’t borrow will be just 2 – 1 is equal to 1.

9 Thus we have 128 as the difference. Very good!

10 Now let’s check if your answer is correct by adding the difference and the subtrahend.

11 Remember, our answer is correct if their sum is equal to the minuend. Lets see!

15 STEP 1: UNDERSTAND

16 What is asked: number of Santan flowers

17 What are given : 3,985 total number of different flowers (daisy,rose and santan) (minuend)

18 1,086 total number of daisy

19 756 total number of rose (the sum will be the subtrahend)

20 STEP 2:PLAN

21 a. What is the process to be used? subtraction with addition

22 b. What is the number sentence? 3,985 – (1,085 + 756)

23 STEP 3: SOLVE

24 To answer this we have to perform the operation in the parenthesis first, which is the

25 subtrahend, before we subtract it from the minuend.

26 3,985 – (1,086 + 756) adding 1,086 and 756 will give us 1,842

26 = 3,985 – (1,842) we can now subtract 1,842 our subtrahend from 3,985 our minuend

27 = 2,111 the difference, the total santan flowers in the bunch.
