I. MODULE 2 – Learning Episode 7

Globalizing Teaching Profession

II. COMPETENCIES
At the end of the learning episode, the students should be able to:
1. explain the concept of globally competitive teacher;
2. synthesize the attributes of a global teacher;
3. compare and contrast the educational systems in some countries; and
4. evaluate the accurate procedure of professionalizing teaching.

III. DISCUSSION

Nowadays, it is challenging to compete in the teaching position. It is necessary

to acquire skills beyond compare to other applicants to be accommodated in the
government. As a future applicant in the teaching position, you should not focus only
with your limited skills, talents and capabilities learned in your teacher education
institution but focus also with the global skills, competencies and abilities.
Year in and year out, there are new teachers who graduate and pass the
Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LET). Unfortunately, there are those
who are not accommodated and given the chance to avail permanent item or plantilla
in the government because of their limited skills and abilities. Given the increasing
interconnectedness of our world, new teachers are being called upon to meet and
support the growth of globally-minded students—but are they ready to do so?
The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) offering teacher education and
teaching profession must provide programs to help future teachers to cope with the
trends of globalization. The teachers should be acquainted to global competence,
engage directly to the trends of global teachers and expose to the nature of work of a
global teacher even in their preservice teaching experiences. Aside from preparing the
would-be teachers to pass their licensure examinations, they should be involved in the
different activities patterned to the other educational systems of the countries in the
world. They must be accustomed to the competencies of other teacher-training
institutions worldwide.

The Global Teacher

There are many challenges as a future teacher. You may encounter these along
with your teaching. The existence of global education in a global village probably offers
issues, problems and concerns. These are the probable results of global education.
As a would-be teacher, you need to possess global competence. This global
competence includes set of basic and essential knowledge, critical disposition and
performance that foster development of the learners. Indeed, a globally competent
teacher has a knowledge of the world, identify the local impact of the global issues and
know how to accept and adopt other educational systems of other countries.

According to Soppelsa, et.al. (2015) the global teacher began by gathering

exemplary examples of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that spell out global
competence in educators into ten (10) such as:
(1) Understanding one's own cultural identity and its influence on
personal dispositions and classroom practice;
(2) Knowing and integrating global dimensions within the disciplines one
teaches;

(3) Engaging students in learning about the world and in exploring their place in
it;
(4) Using real-life global examples, materials, and resources when considering
local, national, and human issues;
(5) Valuing the input of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, families,
and
colleagues, and modeling cultural sensitivity;
(6) Creating environments that encourage positive cross-cultural interaction;
(7) Modeling social responsibility in local and global contexts ;
(8) Helping learners find appropriate actions to improve local and global
conditions;
(9) Assessing learners' global competence and providing growth opportunities
based on their levels of development; and
(10) Advocating for global education and social responsibility.

Given all these, a future teacher is expected to perform multi-faceted tasks. It is

also high time to deal with other teachers from other countries to deal with their own
educational system. It is necessary to identify the characteristics of a global teacher.

Characteristics of a Global Teacher

In order to cope with the trends and new perspectives of teaching, a teacher
must possess globalized skills and abilities. Here are the important characteristics of a
global teacher. These characteristics can help you become a global teacher in the
future. These characteristics can be utilized in teaching students with 21 st century
skills.

1. Possesses a wider range of knowledge of the various educational systems

outside the country;
2. Has a good mastery of skills and competencies which can address global
demands;
3. Possesses attitudes and values that are acceptable to multicultural
communities.

As Soppelsa, et.al. (2015) mentioned, “Teacher training institutions and the

teaching profession have been the focus of many recent conversations in education
circles, including numerous discussions around licensure and credentialing. This led
us to engage directly with educators and their teachers about what global competence
means for them and whether the process for credentialing new teachers is reflective of
the realities of today's classrooms.”
This means that we need to consider the abilities of the teacher to cope with the
trends of educational system. In the academe, the competencies of the teachers must
be enriched and developed. The student-teachers should be exposed to the real world
of teaching with global ideas and 21st century skills and abilities.

Global teachers (should) care about education as a whole, as well as their

school and their classroom.  A global teacher is someone who knows how to share and
care for others. He/she is ready to learn from others by appreciating cultural
differences. He has an open mind to understand others and the world as a whole.

Global Education has been best described by two definitions: (1) UNESCO
defines global education as a goal to become aware of educational conditions or lack of
it, in developing countries worldwide and aim to educate all people to a certain world
standard; and (2) Is a curriculum that is international in scope which prepares today’s
