“How NSTP Changed my Perspective”

An essay about what I learned in NSTP-CWTS

Introduction to NSTP

I was skeptical about what NSTP is. And as I grasp every lesson, I
understand that it is something that I should not just learn but embody. In the
first part, I have learned the importance of civic consciousness and defense
preparedness for the youth. Civic consciousness is a form of social
consciousness co-existing with the concept of citizen. Civic consciousness
mainly refers to the cognition of a citizen's qualification or status with equal
civic rights and obligations. While defense preparedness is the preparedness
for the nation’s defensive mechanism. These aim to develop the ethics of
services of youths, patriotism, and nationalism. The NSTP is being
implemented under the Republic Act 9164 or the NSTP Law Act of 2001.
I also learned about how PUP considers education as an avenue for
the development of the citizenry and the enhancement of the nation’s building.
It is no wonder that the students of the Sintang Paaralan are fiery in achieving
an atmosphere of brotherhood, peace, freedom, justice, and nationalist-
oriented education imbued with the spirit of humanist internationalism. And as
a student of the Sintang Paaralan, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, I
am going to live with the principles of NSTP. I will wholeheartedly accept the
commitment that the PUP NSTP is giving me and always perform
camaraderie with others.

Good Citizenship Values

Being a student of NSTP develops the values of the good citizenry; it

defines an individual with a Filipino identity. As a citizen of the Republic of the
Philippines, I am obliged to exhibit the core values of being a Filipino Citizen. I
must be faithful to my beliefs of the Supreme Being and treat other people
with respect the way I want to be treated and respected. I learned to show
love to other people.
Freedom is a right and responsibility that had been given to us to take
care of. We should always consider unity and equality; no one is higher than
the other. We are all equal—regardless of our socioeconomic status, gender,
age, and philosophical beliefs; thus we must be united. We should always
embody every single word as we sing the “Lupang Hinirang” and as we speak
the “Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa Watawat ng Pilipinas” with pride and
integrity.
We should always take good care of the environment. It is where we
are living; it is what keeps us alive. We must conserve our resources and do
our parts as organisms of biodiversity. I know that every one of us is aware of
the drastic events that are happening in our world. We should not let these
things continue happening, instead, we have to start to take our part in
diminishing these dreadful events.
Understanding our values helps us identify which should be changed
and which must be improved. That hospitable “Juan Dela Cruz” and
“magalang na Nene at Totoy” are what made us Filipinos known in the world.
The Bayanihan culture is our foundation in making this nation strong and
resilient.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire which is why we

are bombarded with lots of beautiful but dangerous volcanoes. We are also
located in the Pacific Typhoon Belt which is also why we experience at least
20 typhoons every year. Being an archipelago, we also have lots of faults that
at any time, can move and cause earthquakes. Being a tropical country, every
part of our country is active but the threats are also high. All of these are the
reasons why we need disaster risk reduction management. This is to reduce
the dangers of disasters to vulnerable communities.
I was able to identify the difference between hazards and disasters and
it can help me know what to mitigate and prepared for. In a country like ours,
the vulnerability is high and therefore are the possible destructions, especially
to humans.
There are different aspects of the DRRM that serve as the pillars to
effective management. I also learned a lot about the different strategies on
how to act before, during, and after a disaster. These are helpful because
when you know what to do, you will not be bothered by the disaster to come.

Environmental Protection

We human beings are the organisms with the highest capacity to think.
We learned everything that is happening in our environment; from the
smallest bacteria to the largest mammal. We understand every cycle and
process that runs the homeostasis of our environment. Because of that, we
should be the ones to protect our surroundings.
In the Philippines, pollution and improper solid wastes management
are major problems. The government passed laws and decrees on how to
control and eventually prevent the illegal practices of mishandling wastes.
One is the RA 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2001. It aims to
properly manage the solid wastes from different sources, from residential to
industrial sectors. Proper disposal of solid wastes is an act every individual
should practice. There are several easy ways that everyone can do to
manage wastes; segregation, composting, and recycling. There are also laws
directly protecting the different elements of the environment like the water, air,
and land.
Air and water pollution are two of the essential needs of humans that
are directly affected by pollutions. Every year, the pollutants in these two vital
necessities are exponentially increasing that millions of people are dying due
to it. There are places in this world that no longer have access to clean water
and air.
As the number of pollutants in different resources rises, our climate is
also changing. People have to start reducing carbon footprints and
greenhouse emissions. Let us not be a threat to the environment because
everything that we are doing right now will be thrown back to us.

PUP NSTP taught me a lot about society and the environment. I will
always bring with me these learnings and apply them to my daily life. I am
looking forward to more NSTP lessons and learnings. I will be a good Filipino
citizen, and I will take care of my country and the environment.
