Khardungla

LOCATION
Khardung La (Khardung Pass, la means pass in Tibetan) is a mountain pass in the Leh district of the
Indian union territory of Ladakh. The local pronunciation is "Khardong La" or "Khardzong La" but, as
with most names in Ladakh, the romanised spelling varies.

Khardung La is 39 km by road from Leh. Earlier, the first 24 km, as far as the South Pullu check
point, were paved. From there to the North Pullu checkpoint about 15 km beyond the pass the
roadway was primarily loose rock, dirt, and occasional rivulets of snow melt. Now, all the way is
properly paved. The road approaching the Nubra Valley is very well maintained (except in a few
places where washouts or falling rock occur). Hired vehicles (two and four-wheel-drive), heavy
trucks, and motorcycles regularly travel into the Nubra Valley, though special permits are required
to be arranged for travellers.
HOW TO REACH
There are various methods to reach Khardungla.
1. You can reach Khardung La by road from Leh. It falls on the route to Nubra Valley at a distance of 39
km from Leh. The road from Leh to Khardung La is asphalted for about 24 km till the South Pullu
check post but from there the road is made up of gravel and dirt track till the North Pullu check-point.
It should take around 1 hour to reach Khardung La from Leh. Several taxis, tourist and private cars,
buses and motorbikes play on this route between May to September.
2. You can take a train to Jammu Tawi Railway station from where you need to travel by road to Leh via
the Manali-Leh highway. Alternatively, you can take a train to Srinagar railway station and reach Leh
via the Srinagar-Leh highway. From Leh, it is the same route to Khardung La as mentioned above.
3. You can fly to the Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport which is directly connected from Delhi,
Srinagar and Jammu by the flights run by Air India, Go Air and Jet Airways. Schedules are subject to
change according to the weather so it is advisable to keep your plans flexible. Once you reach Leh,
you can get to Khardung La by road via the route mentioned above.
