This document discusses the basic rules and shapes used in flowchart construction. It explains that flowcharts should follow a top-down, left-to-right flow direction and that arrowheads indicate the sequence and flow. It describes the main shapes as the terminal (start/end), process/action, decision, and preparation shapes and notes connectors are used to link pages.

USE A TOP-DOWN AND ALWAYS PUT ARROWHEADS
LEFT-TO-RIGHT FLOW DIRECTION WHY DO YOU THINK WE NEED THESE RULES? SHAPES USED IN FLOWCHARTS THE TERMINAL An oval or a rounded rectangle is called a Terminal shape. It shows the starting or ending point of the flow process.
It may contain the words, “Begin”
or “End” or “Start” or “Stop”. THE PROCESS OR ACTION A rectangle represents a Process or an Action shape. It reflects a single step or instruction like performing arithmetic operations, comparing or sorting. For example, in baking, it could be “beat the eggs” or “knead the dough”. THE DECISION A diamond represents the Decision shape. It is used to show a point in the process where more than one path can be taken.
Should be a question that can be
answered by: “yes or no”, or “true or false” (it is binary) THE PREPARATION The Preparation shape denotes an instruction or step that will modify a process’s course of execution.
For example, a flowchart depicting
a simple purchase transaction may “prepare” a starting amount of money. THE ARROW
Arrows indicate sequence of steps
and the flow direction. THE CONNECTOR Connectors are used to connect flowcharts from one page to another or from a decision diamond to another page or process. When you reach the bottom of the page or need to jump to another page, draw a flowchart connector symbol and connect it to the last item on the chart. FLOWCHART 02 / CONSTRUCTION
