Problem 3) For the element shown in the figure:

a) Find the magnitude of the unknown stresses h and h
b) Find the orientation of the principal stresses; clearly indicate their
orientation in a small sketch
c) Show the orientation of the planes of maximum as well as minimum
shear

a) Mohr circle:

h = 1.26 ,h = 0
max = 3,min = -3

b) c)

Problem 4) A sand is hydrostatically consolidated in a triaxial test apparatus to

420 kPa and then sheared with the drainage valves open. At failure,
(1 – 3) is 1046 kPa. Determine the major and minor principal
stresses at failure and the angle of shearing resistance. Plot the Mohr
diagram.

a = 1 – 3 = 1046 kPa
1 = 3 + a = 1466 kPa
using graphs or trigonometric equations:
c = 0  sin  = R / ave = [(1 – 3) / 2] / [(1 + 3) / 2] = 0.5546   = 33.68
f = 45 +  / 2 = 61.84

Problem 5) A sample of dense sand tested in a triaxial CD test failed along a well-
defined failure plane at an angle of 66 with the horizontal. Find the
effective confining pressure of the test if the principal stress difference
at failure was 100 kPa.

f = 66 = 45 + /2   = 42

af = 1 – 3 = 100 kPa
Cos  = ff / R = ff / [(1 – 3)/2]  cos 42 = ff / 50  ff = 37.16 kPa

 
 

Using graph and trigonometric equations:

Sand c = 0  sin  = R / ave = [(1 – 3) / 2] / [(1 + 3) / 2]
Sin 42 = 100 / (1 + 3)  1 + 3 = 149.45 kPa
1 – 3 = 100  1 = (149.45 + 100) / 2 = 124.72 kPa
3 = 1 – 100 = 124.72 – 100 = 24.72 kPa
3 = c = 24.72 kPa
