A. Definition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to
describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

B. Purpose of Descriptive Text


 To describe person, thing or place in specific
 To describe a particular person, thing or place

C. The Characteristics/Language Feature of Descriptive Text


1. Using the simple present tense
Because we will describe a fact or truth that is attached to something or
someone. And one of the functions of the simple present is to ilustrate a fact or
truth.
2. Using many adjective
Because of its function is to describe something by explaining its properties,
then the text will be found many descriptive adjective, as handsome, beautiful,
tall, small, big, or if the adjective is derived from the verb, then you will find
additional –ve,-ing,-nt in tow.
3. Relating verb
In the descriptive text we will often find relating verb. In Indonesian is often
interpreted as ‘’is’’. Because the purpose or function descriptive text is to
describe, then definitely we will often find the word was (is). His name is
Andy(his name as Andy), his height is 160 cm(height is 160 cm)

D. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text


1. Identification
This section in the first paragraph-the goal is to identify something to be
described or depicted. Explanation easy, Identification serves to introduce the
reader about the object or something that we have described before we tell
about its properties. The goal is not to get one of those readers.
2. Description
This section paragraph and so on-contains the properties inherent in something
that you already introduced to the reader in the first paragraph.

My Beloved Teddy Bear


I have favorite doll it is an original Teddy Bear from America. My
boyfriend gave it to me as my birthday present last year. I was very happy. I
put it on a cabinet next to my bed. Sometimes I use as a pillow.

My Teddy Bear is very big, and the colour is cream. It is about 180 and
width is about 50cm when I put it on my bed it will occupy half of it. It is
almost as big as my body. It is made of typical kind of fabric called rasfur. The
head is roun with the size of 25 cm. It has two ears which located on top of its
head. The shape of the ear is half circle and the size is half of my palm. The
colour of its eye is dark brown. I think it is made of glass since I can see
through it. It has a blue shirt encircling its body. On the sole of each foot, there
is a paw pattern made of smooth fabric .

2. Report Text
A. Definition of Report Text
Report text is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a
result of systematic observation and analysis.

B. Purpose of Report Text


 Its social purpose is presenting information about something. They
generally describe an entire class of things, wheather natural or made
:mammals, the planets ,rocks,plants,countries of region,
culture,transportation, and so on .
 To presents information about something, as it is.

C. The Chracteristics/Language Feature of Report Text


1. Use of general nouns, eg hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, eg our
dog;
2. Use of relating verbs to describe features, eg molecules are tiny particles;
3. Some use of action verbs when describing behaviour, eg Emus cannot fly;
4. Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness, eg Tropical cyclones
always begin over the sea;
5. Use of technical terms, eg isobars are lines drawn on a weather map.
6. Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to organise bundles of information;
repeated naming of the topic as the begining focus of the clause.

D. Generic Structure of Report Text


1. General clasification
Stating classification of general aspect of thing;animal, public place, plant,etc.
Which will be discussed in general.

Tells what the phenomenon under discussion; in terms of parts, qualities,
habits or behaviors.

Tourist Destination
Tourist destination is a city, town, or other area that is dependent to a
significant extent on the revenues accruing from tourism.
In other words, tourist destination is a country, state, region , city or
town which is marketed as a place for tourists to visit. T may contain one or
more tourist attractions.

One of the most popular tourist destinations is a tropical island resort.


Tropical island resort is an island that depends on tourism as source of
revenue.
Bali in indonesian, Phuket in Thailand, Hawai in the United States,
Palawan in the Philippines, Fiji in the Pacific, Vamizi Island and Ibiza in
Mediterranean are examples of popular island resorts in the world.

3. Recount Text
A. Definition of Recount Text
Recount text is a text thet telling the reader about one story, action or activity.
Its goal to entertaining or informing the reader.

B. Purpose of Recount Text


To retell past experience

C. The Characteristics /Language Feature of Recount Text


1. Using the simple past tense, past continious tense, past perfect tense, and
past perfect continious tense.
2. Using temporal sequence , e.g. On Saturday, On Monday, On Sunday
3. Focus on spesific participant, e.g. I,(the writer)
4. Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.
5. Using action verd, e.g. went, stayed

D. Generic Stucture of Recount Text
a. Orientation
It gives the readers the background information needed to understand the
text, such as who was invloved, where it happened, and when it happened.
b. Events
A series of events, ordered in a chronological sequence.
c. Re-orientation
A personal comment about the event or what happened in the end.

A Trip to the Zoo


Yesterday my family went to the zoo to see the elephant and other
animal. When we go the zoo, we went to the shop to buy some food to
give to the animals.
After getting the food we went to the nocturnal house where we saw
birds and reptiles which only come at night.
Before lunch we went for a ride on the elephant. It was a thrill to ride
it. Dad nearly fell off when he let go of the rope. During lunch we fed
some birds in the park. In the afternoon we saw the animals being fed.
When returned home we were tired but happy because we had so much
fun.

4. Procedure Text
A. Definition of Procedure Text
Is a text that shows a process in order. Its social function is to describe how
something is completely done through a sequence of series.

B. Purpose of Procedure Text


 To explain/tell the reader how to make/operate/do something through a
sequence of actions or steps.
 To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something
.
C. The Characteristics/Language Feature of Procedure Text
1. Use adverbial of sequence/using temporal conjunction (e.g:first, second, third,
the last )
2. Use command/immperative sentence(e.g:put the noodles on the...., cut the
onion ..., wash the tomatos )
3. Using action verb
4. Using simple present tense.

D. Generic Structure of Procedure Text
1. Goal
It is containt the purpose of the text.(e.g: how to make a brownies )
2. Material or Ingredient
It is containt of the materials that used in the process. (e.g:the material to cook
omelette are egg, onion vegetable oil, etc.)
3. Step
It is containt of the steps to make something in the goal.(e,g:first wash the
onion)

How to Make a Glass of Coffee

Material :

 Water
 Sugar
 Coffee
 Glass
 Spoon
 Kettle

Steps :

 Boil the water first


 Second, take two spoons of coffee and two spoons of sugar. Put into glass
 Next, pour the hot water into a glass
 Then, stir it gently
 Finally, your coffee is ready to drink

5. Narrtive Text
A. Definition of Narrative Text
A narrtive text is an imaginative story to entertain people.

B. Purpose of Narrtive Text


The purpose of narrative text is to amuse or to entertain the reader with a story

C. The Chracteristics/Language Feature of Narrative Text


1. Using past tense (killed, drunk, etc.)
2. Adverb of time(once upon a time, one day ets.)
3. Time conjunction(when,then, suddenly, etc.)

4. Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general.
(Cindirella, Snow white, Alibaba etc.)
5. Action verb. A verb that shows an action(killed, dug, walked,etc)
6. Direct speech. It is to make the story lively.(snow white said,’’my name is
Snow White). The direct speech uses present tense.

D. Generic Structure of Narrative Text


1. Orientation
It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced
2. Complication
Where the problems in the story developed .
3. Resolution
Where the problems in the story is solved . will be happy ending or bad
ending.
4. Coda/reorientation(optional)
Lesson from the story .

True Friends
Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking
through the forest together. They knew that anything dangerous can happen
any time in the forest. So they promised each other that they would always be
together in any case of danger.
Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer towad them. One of
them climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other one did not
know how to climb up the tree. So being led by his common sense, he lay
down on the ground breathless and pretended to be a dead man.
The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt in
his ears, and slowly left the place because the bears do not want to touch the
dead creatures. After that, the friend on the tree came down and asked his
friend that was on the ground, ‘’friend , what did the bear whisper into your
ears?’’ the other friend replied ‘’just now the bear advised me not to believe a
false friend.’’
Moral of the story-A true friend in need is a friend indeed.
